Square brings simple mobile payments to Android

Square is a simple payment utility for everyone. The service allows just about anyone with a smartphone to take card payments everywhere they go. Square is both a software and hardware solution. The application is free in the Android Market and the card swipe dongle will also be offered for free.

The major benefits of Square’s service is that no contract or merchant account is required. There are no setup or monthly fees and anyone can signup in minutes. In order to start accepting payment cards, individuals must submit to a credit check so that Square can verify your identity. Once accepted as a verified user, then Square will mail you the free Square card reader.

Note: Square is currently only available in the U.S. and requires Android 2.x.

Highlights of Square include:

  • 0 to $60 in under 10 seconds: Start accepting cash and card payments with Square. No contracts, monthly fees, or hidden costs. Effortlessly manage the money you take with an easy and intuitive interface.
  • Swipe it: Accept payment cards on any device with an audio input jack, including your mobile phone. After signing up for Square, provide your address on the web and we’ll send your free card reader and Square sticker.
  • Lose the paper: Get your receipts sent instantly to your email or mobile phone. Access them securely online.
  • Pay quickly, securely: Create a Square account to speed up and secure every payment. With photo verification, Square users can visually confirm you are the card holder.
  • Get real rewards: If you frequent a place that accepts Square, we’ll let them know you’re a repeat customer. That 10th cappuccino may be on the house, no paper coffee card required.
  • All your receipts, organized: See all of your Square receipts in one simple view. Browse photos of every item you bought, read descriptions, and share with your friends and co-workers.
  • Your business in real-time: All of your cash and card payments in a clean interface accessible securely from anywhere. Instantly see how much you’ve made for the day, broken out by tips, tax, and payment method. Download your data into a standard format to work with your favorite program.

Is this only available in the U.S, I’m in Europe and using 2.1 with not results for square up?

    • https://squareup.com/ Eric Burke

@scoopo16 Square is currently US only.

Small caveat. Appearantly it’s for Android OS 2.x up. They’re site says they only support the current 2.x phones out and does not show up on 1.6 market.

    Hi,

Is Square limited to the US users only? Market says such a product does not exist, I’m based in the UK.

    Cheers,

    Tom

If this works right, and doesn’t contribute to the eventual robot uprising, this sounds like a great idea, going to look into this more before trying it out!

Remember the days when we actually just used our cell phones for calls? Seems like only a few years ago yet the technology has come so far so quickly. So when my friend tries to skate on the $20 he owes me I can just whip out my Droid and tell that deadbeat to pay up. Got to love technology!

Caveat, although the app is free, the dongle is free, and there are no setup and monthly fees, there are still fees for using the service itself. That should probably be mentioned less someone think this is a totally free service (it’s not).

    • http://Website Ed

Oh, it’s not free to use. No post has said that, at least none I’ve seen. The app is free. The dongle they send to you via conventional mail is free. I did not see any charges even for postage. And then the way they earn their money is by taking a cut just like any other merchant account does when they process charge payments. The percentage is a tad higher and that is fine by me since monthly fees can really hurt a small biz like mine. I used to pay $50 (cheapest I could find anywhere) for exactly nothing on months when no one charged anything at my biz and that is not all that uncommon for many other types of businesses as well. I work as a photographer, from my home, sometimes doing as few as a couple of job contracts in a month and the companies want to pay by check. I don’t argue. However, there are definitely times when this ability will make not only the occasional charge a cinch, it also opens up wide a photographer’s dream to be able to process charges so easily on location at events! The percentage is well worth it!

I have my card reader and it doesn’t work with the iPhone app – you HAVE to type it in. The card reader works with the iPad app, though. Guess we’ll have to wait for another update to be able to swipe cards.
