Here at A&M we have written a lot of stories recently about mobile check-in services such as Foursquare, Gowalla, and SCVNGR. These check-in location-based apps allow you to share your life by sharing your location and a brief comment with your Facebook and Twitter friends. Picplz hopes to take this new social networking trend one step further by introducing picture based check-ins into the mix.
Picplz makes use of the camera in your Android phone, and allows you to take pictures of where you are and attaches them to a normal check-in event. Picplz uses Foursquare’s check-in service, giving you the normal amount of credits for your check-in. This integration with Foursquare allows you to earn the usual badges as if you were using Foursquare alone.
Launching the app takes you directly to the camera, essentially forcing you to take a picture before you can check-in at your location. Once you snap the picture, your GPS snaps into gear and determines your location and displays nearby venues. Once you select a venue, simply add a brief message (or not) and click post to send your location and picture out for all the world to see.
Picplz definitely adds a new and fun way to experience check-in services. Not that I felt anything was “missing” from these services before, but Picplz really makes the whole experience feel complete. I highly recommend you download Picplz and try it out today.
