Android and Me recommends: App of the Week July 30, 2010

We’re launching yet another semi-regular column on Android and Me. Every week (or so) we will ask one of our staffers about an application they love/can’t live without and share that app with you, our readers.

I will be starting out this piece by sharing an app you’ve probably heard of that launched this week to some market issues, psx4droid.

psx4droid is a playstation emulator that will allow you to play your cherished original playstation games right from your Android phone. I have been spending the last few days getting re-lost in Final Fantasy 7, and thoroughly enjoy the experience I’ve had with psx4droid thus far. The button layout is solid, and the application overall just feels like it’s well put together and it really gets the job done.

So if you’re a nerd like me, and/or loved the original Playstation and want to enjoy Playstation games on your Android device, I highly encourage you to head over to the market and buy psx4droid. It’s definitely worth the $6 price tag, if not more.

Look for our full review of psx4droid to come over the next week as we’ve had more time to play around with it.

We’ll be back next week with another staff recommended app (hopefully from another staffer) so stay tuned!

Disclaimer: Do not download ROMs for psx4droid unless you have purchased the original game as well. It’s a big legal no-no.

Anthony loves all things technology, from hardware to apps and games. You can connect with him via Google+ or Twitter by clicking one of the fancy doo-dads above.

And what the hell happened to Droid Week (http://www.droidweek.com/)?!

    • http://adomanico01.blogspot.com/ Anthony Domanico

Good point. Part of our work is going to be to figure out how to get droidweek up and running again, if that’s the plan.

For now, we will be delivering the staff pick of the week through the main feed, but thanks for pointing out that we still have Droidweek :)

Yea, I liked Droid Week. I guess it went the way of the Behold II, which is still featured as a new phone on Android and Me :)

Droid Week was mostly a design failure on my part. I was so concerned with making the site look awesome I didn’t really take any time to make it useful. It only displayed screens in a fixed resolution, only portrait mode, didn’t give more than a paragraph for description, only allowed twitter commenting (which there wasn’t much of), etc, etc. I could go on and on. I think the site would’ve worked perfect for a specific app, but not so much for a weekly showcase. I think this new series will do a better job of bringing us apps in a timely manner and in more depth than Droid Week ever could. Hopefully we can beef up this staff pick series to include apps selected by each of the entire staff…

Can the mytouch possibly run this?

    • http://adomanico01.blogspot.com/ Anthony Domanico

      Which version?

The slide might, not too sure about the older versions.

Though everything can probably run it, just not as well

Getting ready to upgrade to a Droid X, but as of now I’m still stuck with my G1. Does anyone have any experience with this app and a G1? I’m guessing the lag-time will make most of the ROMs unplayable on my G1, but just thought I’d check…

I guess I can always just wait to get this when I upgrade, but delayed gratification is for sissies!

If you’re just going to buy it when you get the droid x anyway, why not buy it now and try it on the G1 and let us know if it works? :)

@thered Just wondering even tho the droid x is a solid superphone, why dont you get the galaxy s epic 4g? Its 4g and has the hummingbird cpu and a super amoled and 2 cameras (one in front one in back) for full specs visit http://androidandme.com/2010/07/carriers/sprint/samsung-epic-4g-spec-sheet-finally-surfaces/

Runs AMAZING on N1 using Cyanogen’s nightly ROM overclocked to 1190.

    HIGHLY recommended app!

    • http://Website Mark

how is your battery life with that kind of overclock?

      • http://Website Jamie;

        Surprisingly its pretty solid.

When running on 1190 constant though, like running this app, it drains fast lol.

      • Nicko01

That’s barely an overclock compared to what we do to droids. Their 550MHz stock CPUs run fine up to 1300MHz. I keep mine at 1200MHz usually. The battery life is fine as long as you use CPU scaling and don’t play PSX all day.

I can play games like Crash Bandicoot and Spyro the Dragon on my Droid at 1GHz. It’s not perfect, but it’s definitely smooth enough to play. I get about 3 hours of PSX on a charge, which isn’t really bad for a phone =P

How do u get it on ur phone I now have the samsung galaxy s3 I really wanna play crash and spyro help plzz

  • http://Website Mase007

i tried it on my G1 the apps works, becuz of the G1 specs the games lags alot and game play is super slow mo, it take a couple of seconds or more to respond when playin. the games i tried on it were Super Street Fighters Plus and Dragon Ball GT. Cant wait 2 upgrade to a super phone.

Downloading ROMs is in most cases a legal no-no, even if you own the game :) It’s just less of a *moral* or *ethical* no-no.

    • Nicko01

I don’t really think Sony or the developers care too much about 2-generation-old piracy.

I don’t even bother ripping them myself at this point. They’re so easy to download online. Especially since a few of my games are getting scratched up and sometimes have issues because of it.

Been playing FF7 on my Captivate with psx4droid for 2 days now and it is a blast…can’t stop, forgot what a great game it is. I’ve used the 3.5mm video out to put it on my 52″ samsung lcd at home and it looks pretty decent. This is a great app!
