Verizon Wireless’ summer device catalog just leaked thanks to BGR and it confirms the Motorola Droid 2 is coming soon, although no official release date was mentioned. We previously went hands-on with the Droid 2 and discovered it’s virtually identical to the Droid X minus the smaller display, lower megapixel camera, and lack of HDMI out.
The Droid 2 has long been rumored for a summer launch after the Droid X and our sources still tell us that could be August 23rd. Since both phones are so similar, we expect to see the Droid 2 going for the same $199 with 2-year contract that is being offered on the Droid X.
All of this is speculation at this point (since Verizon hasn’t announced anything), but the Droid 2 could be the first device to ship with Android 2.2. Google already released the update for its Nexus One smartphone and we hear Motorola is hard at work on their versions for the Droid, Droid X, and Droid 2.
Even though Android 2.2 is ready to go, it appears the wait could be caused by Adobe. As we saw with our hands-on video of Flash 10.1, the popular plugin is still in beta and we don’t expect a final version till next month. More details should be coming on the third Monday in August.
