First impressions and pics of the Motorola DROID X

The Motorola DROID X may be launching at Verizon stores across the the country tomorrow morning, but we thought you might be interested in some pictures of the phone and our first impressions. We can definitely say that the DROID X is one of the best Android options from Verizon and the fastest phone from Motorola to date.

Personally, I’m not a huge fan of phones with extra large screens. My main complaint about the EVO 4G was the size and I was a bit taken aback when I heard that the DROID X was even larger. However, the sharp angles on the DROID X actually make the phone feel smaller in the hand than the HTC EVO 4G.

The custom UI on the DROID X is actually quite impressive. Most Android fans have pretty harsh words for Motorola’s MotoBLUR, but we’re pretty sure that those who spend a few minutes with the DROID X will walk away with a smile on their face. The phone still has all the social integration features found on other Motorola phones, but the UI has been toned down a little, making it less intrusive. One of the coolest features is the ability to re-size the majority of Motorola’s widgets so that you can customize your home screen to the way to really want it.

We will be playing around with the DROID X quite a bit over the next few days, so be sure to check back in. A full review, benchmark breakdown, and a few other posts will be coming soon, but if you’ve already made up your mind on the DROID X, don’t forget that you can pick it up from our online store after midnight.

I like the looks of it, and will enjoy the large screen. I, myself, have large hands and long fingers. Glad to be picking one up tomorrow for my first android phone

I’ve lusted for the elusive Verizon i*phone for too long. I’m Hoping that the DX will legitimize Android in the market by showing you don’t need to have a piece of fruit on the case to have an awesome set of hardware. VIVA LA ANDROID!

The incredible does look a lot better and is soon gettin 720p recording and all the important features so you might as well get the incredible

One word to you. You “Stupid”. You says HTC Incredible soon getting Video Recording 720P Quality (wait until when). Motorola Droid X ready to use Video Recording 720P Quality. Motorola Droid X have 8 Mega Pixel Camera and much important features than HTC Incredible.

Wow…….well one thing the incredible has on the X, it can be rooted, and has no encryption on the bootloader which means it can and already is running froyo. The X wont ever be and I dare you to try so your phone can explode. LOL

You will just have to wait on Moto and Vrz to supply you with an update on THEIR time. LMAO!!!!!!

wow this is like the complete opposite of the gizmodos review of the Droid X. They absolutely hate their UI….

Next time focus the camera before taking the picture, and use a smaller aperture so that the entire phone is in focus. Blurry pictures don’t do any of us any good.

Weird, every other site I have read has said that Motoblur is a mess and the only thing holding this phone back from being the best Android phone on the market.

    Love this phone

I will have to go play with this MotoBlur to see what I think of it, however I know just playing with it for a few minutes won’t give me a true feel for it. I like the phone though. Sorry, but you HTC fanboi’s are just as bad as Apple fanboi’s. Go Android no matter what manufacturer!

I hope peopel keep in mind that the “quite impressive” comment in my post was in comparison to the original MotoBLUR UI. It does have some nice features, but it’s not as refined as HTC Sense. The widgets on the phone are a lot cleaner but every single widget has the exact same design elements, even the clock. It does get old after a while, but there’s always stock Android widgets you can throw in to mix things up a bit.

droid X – what was moto thinking?
    1) locked, can only overclock..
    2) blur will delay the future generations of google o.t.a. os. hell – they can’t even get it right with the droid1.
    3) hdmi out? pointless. can only be used for videos you take. no netflix support – blockbuster, welcome to 1985.
    4) No Divx or mp5 support….
    5) this means you cannot rip a dvd – transfer it to your DX, and play it out through hdmi…. Simply brilliant.

oh moto. just when you got it right, you fumbled up again.

      1) How dare Motorola protect their phones from unintended uses! That’s just self righteous of them!

      3) Put a video on your phone, go to a friends house, plug into their TV, oh hey movie.

      4) MP5….. new standard? It supports MP4 which is pretty damned popular.

      5) Rip a DVD, encode in MP4, play it out through HDMI. WOAH!

i called moto, and without a hack you cannot play movies via phone hdmi output to tv…. i have a droid 1…. you working for steve jobs or something?

I think that it can be a big hit if if Verizon publicizes it properly.
Most people don’t care if the bootloader is signed or whatever. For people who like to mod their phones, this is strictly a no-no.

Ok so I’ve had the Droid X since noon and played with it all day. I LOVE IT. Coming from an iPhone 3GS, it took me about an hour to forget I did not have Apple’s UI (which is defintiely superior). Now that I’m used to Android, pretty painless. Data and browser are incredibly fast, and MUCH faster than anything I experienced with various iPhones over the last 3 years. All this crap about the phone being BIG and unwieldly is.. well crap. While the Droid X is longer than my iPhone, it doesn’t feel big. Overall the phone is very thin and the lip at the top is a perfect cradle for my index finger. Focus on the camera works better than my 3GS. Pictures I took were very good, but camera is at best above average. Battery life is surprisingly good, definitely better than 3GS as I’ve surfed and played video while showing coworkers and family most of day. Battery has lasted all day with heavy heavy use so I expect 2-3 days on a charge under normal use. Audio during video playback is good but could be better. The speaker placement is the fault here. I can’t say enough about how freakin great the display is. Best I’ve seen. Much better than the Incredible and noticeably better than my 3GS. Display is bright and crisp. Touch screen is just as accurate and sensitive as my 3GS. I expected a big difference in tactile feel but hell, I can’t tell the difference. Build quality of phone seems great, though I’d rather have all touchscreen buttons. I am extremely impressed with the Droid X and a very happy new Verizon customer. Glad I was not swayed by Giz’s bizarrely negative review.

I came from a droid and i tell you the droid x is not simply a bigger droid with better camera. This is a whole new experience.

Man, I once owned a Motorola phone, and I swore off them ever since. I was almost convinced to buy the droid X, but not being rootable, well, tough luck, Motorola. No sale from me. I don’t have the faith in you that I have in google.
