We were pretty impressed with NPD’s Q2 numbers, but it looks like Q3 will be even more impressive.  During an interview at the Techonomy conference, Google’s Eric Schmidt let slip that 200,000 new Android phones are being activated every single day.  In May, Google made the announcement at their I/O conference that daily activations had reached the 100,000 mile marker.  Exactly 12 weeks later, that activation number is now two times higher.

Quite a few factors go into the huge jump in new handsets.  Since Google I/O, eight new Android handsets have been introduced to the U.S. market alone.  Phones like the HTC EVO 4G, Motorola DROID X, and the Samsung Galaxy S family have been leading the way.  With two more Galaxy S phones expected to launch in the U.S. this summer and the Motorola DROID 2 right around the corner, Android will continue to grow over the summer months.

Unfortunately, Android will most likely not able to sustain this unprecedented growth rate.  The platform will continue to grow, but don’t be surprised if the numbers drop down below 20-30% grown quarter over quarter.  It’ll probably take another 7-8 months before Android will be able to topple Symbian’s 300,000 daily activations and become the most popular smartphone OS on the planet.  Of course, we’d love to be proven wrong.
