Aluminum-clad Acer Liquid Metal to feature Android 2.2

Acer is looking at add a new phone to their Android lineup.  The Acer Liquid Metal has just surfaced on the web with a few pictures and details on internal hardware.  As you can tell from the images, the Acer Liquid Metal lives up to its name by offering an aluminum shell which comes in two different colors.  On the inside, the Acer liquid Metal will sport Qualcomm’s MSM 7230-1 CPU clocked at 800 MHz running Android 2.2, 512MB of ROM, 512 MB of DDR RAM, Bluetooth 3.0, and Dolby Mobile speakers.  We don’t have any images of the screen, but the Liquid Metal is expected to have a 3.6 inch TFT-LCD capacitive display with a WVGA 800 x 480 resolution.

Launch date and pricing are anyone’s guess at this point, but we wouldn’t be surprised is the Acer Liquid Metal never makes it to the U.S. market.  Would anyone be interested in buying an Android 2.2 powered Acer handset if it is picked up by a U.S. carrier?

512 MB ROM? That can’t be right. The Vibrant has 16 GB, and even the G2 has 4 GB.

I like Acer but this phone looks a lot like the G2: awesome if it was released 6 months ago, kinda weak compared to phones shipping today.

Keep in mind that android 2.2 you don’t need a whole lot of internal memory since you can push apps to sd.

You can push “all” apps to sd?

        • http://Website Spencer

Not exactly, any app can take advantage of this by adding one line of code to their app; but so far only about a third of the apps and games have taken advantage of this. Also, it only moves about half the amount of memory it takes up to the sd card, and leaves the other half still on the phone. There is the option to switch between saving it all on the phone (like everything prior to 2.2) and an option to choose individual apps to switch half of it to the sd card.

Wait, full metal case? Doesn’t metal block both wi-fi and cell tower frequencies?

Hmmm, looking at that side shot is anyone thinking what I’m thinking? Any chance this phone could have an internal slide out keyboard like the Huawei Hx phone reported on this site on 9/4? Or am I seeing things?

Hold up. Is it “Liquid Metal (TM)” (an Apple owned joint) or is it Aluminum?

Very reminiscent of the HTC 1. http://designfabulous.blogspot.com/2010/07/htc-1.html

Scott, 512MB ROM is where the OS is stored and is not the same as internal flash memory. Also, the MSM7230 in this uses the Ardeno 205 which is competitive with the PowerVR SGX5xx’s of TI’s OMAP3 and Samsung Hummingbird SoCs. The processor in this is competitive with the everything else around today.

    rom == read only memory.

aka you can’t write to it.

aka not for storing downloaded apps.

      You fail.

The ROM in android phones is used to store apps and data.

It looks like a nice phone, and the specs aren’t so bad either. Now I’m wondering about that camera…

Not, as I have an N1. But if I didn’t, I would be very interested just as I was interested in the original Acer Liquid. The reality is that they Acers are really cheap. If this is the case here this looks like a really nice phone for really cheap. Put a $100 with contract tag on it and EVERYONE will be interested.

Yup, Acers are relatively cheap. And in Europe, the Liquid & Liquid ‘E’ are doing very well.

BUT, don’t get this for the Android 2.2 version number — over at liquid.modaco.com there’s both compiled and leaked versions of various 2.2 builds, and the developer community is extremely fast and smart… I guess the price of the original Liquid will go down a Lot and that means an even cheaper phone with Android 2.2, 5MP camera, 1GHz CPU (overclocked), 3.5″ WVGA screen, WiFi (with tethering!), etc. In red, black, or white plastic though.
