Android 2.1 update for the Motorola Cliq now available

Android 2.1 for the Motorola Cliq has arrived! Just one day after Motorola posted that they were looking for Android 2.1 testers, they have decided to make the Eclair update to everyone. The new build number for the Motorola Cliq is Blur_Version.2.1.5.MB200.T-Mobile.en.US and will require users to have at least 100 MB of free space available on their memory card. Motorola will be permanently reducing your internal memory since the update requires a bit more room than the original Android 1.5 build did.

Motorola has put up five pages of detailed instructions on how to prepare, download, and install the latest Android update to the Cliq. So what are you waiting for? Once your Cliq is up and running on Android 2.1, be sure to let us know how the update process went and which Android 2.1 feature you like the most.

This is an update done right… Why can’t Google/T-Mobile do this?

    • http://Website DROID Sam

Explain please. How is this manual update any better than the automated OTA updates that T-Mobile and other carriers push out with files hosted on Google’s servers?

I understand that doing an update through the computer may be a bit safer, but since the carrier is not pushing this out to the Cliq, there is no way they can make sure all users are running the latest build.

It’s better because they announced it’s release and before we even got to November they put the update on the internet. The mytouch users have been promised an update since June, and it still hasn’t gotten to even 50% of the community.

The update isn’t going to get to all of the users true, but I have to think Motorola would e-mail Cliq owners about the release of a major update. They wouldn’t just put it on the internet and wait for the users to just find it themselves.

Also, for the most part, users that don’t catch this update… probably don’t really care if they get it either. What they don’t know wont hurt them. I meant no disrespect to Tmo or Google, I’m just an angry impatient MyTouch owner who wants to be using Froyo already. ; D

its done right cause its down now and no more updates it was a test so not everyone gets it so soon.

    Cliq, Cliq, Cliq…. downloading now!

So, what are the chances that Motorola will give us Andorid 2.2?

    • Rockerito

      none!!

That I have an understanding, the ROM was indeed only meant for testers.
I love that I downloaded it.
Just gotta wait to go home and charge my CLIQ, because its dying.
And really? There isn’t much difference.
The computer is only used as a transfer. (USB wise)
    I downloaded through Android browser
So you can consider it OTA. :)
    Don’t get it twisted.

How come when i tried downloading the file it said that my phone does not support that kind of file?

  • http://Website Kimbo

Downloaded the file, loaded it onto my phone, and when I try to do an update I get, “Your phone is up to date!” Apparently it isn’t seeing the file. Any ideas? It’s in the root directory of my SD card, where the instructions told me to put it.

Look around for some installation instructions. That’s not how the update process works. I don’t have a CLIQ anymore so I don’t know which buttons you hold to get it into an install mode.

      • http://Website John

        Power + camera on boot

      • http://Website Kimbo

That is actually exactly how the update process works – at least the one that Motorola gave instructions for.

    • http://Website Richard

I never unplug the phone until the update was done i just unmount the sd card
don’t know if the was the reason. but just give it a try it might work

    • aodhan

you need a ziped file instead of an unzipped one just use like internet explorer cause the newer search engines will automatically unzipp the file

    What about the cliq xt???

  • http://Website Toston

    Yeah! What abuot the XT?

  • http://Website Cliq user

If you get stuck in an endless boot cycle try the follow steps below:

1.Turn off phone (take out battery if power doesnt work)
2.Turn on phone holding down the camera button aswell
3.Once the green text comes up, let go of the camera button and click the volume down button
    4. Wait until the ‘!’ inside a triangle appears.
5.Slide open keyboard and click Alt + L
6.A menu should appear. Touch ‘Wipe data / factory reset’
    7.Touch OK
    8.Reboot

An OTA would have been so much better than this, but at least it is here. Glad my main phone is a rooted N1

After I got past my first problem (file got corrupted somehow? so I had to re-download it and start the instructions over again), I ran into the endless boot cycle problem. Your instructions worked like a charm! Thank you!

Damn now it says page unavailable wtf?

  • http://Website Enxu

Thanks @Cliq user! That worked, and the 2.1 update went through!

  • http://Website John

The update is not available to the public yet.

  • http://Website Noriega713

Ok i Downloaded the thing then i added all the friggin ( . ) but where am i supposed to put it? Do i just throw it in zipped or make a new folder and then unzip?…

    • Alan Reboli

      lol what?

      1. Download the file and move it to the root of your SD Card.
      2. Unmount your Cliq
      3. Get to your home screen and press menu > about phone > system updates
      4. After it loads it’ll ask you to “copy”, do so.

Wait a while and it’ll reboot and load a few times but then you’ll have delicious eclair on your Cliq.

BTW: Motoblur gets even worse with this release, I would suggest ADWLauncher. It runs flawlessly.

I installed 2.1 awhile ago on my Cliq, it is still POC phone. I can’t believe they still producing it.

Touch screen became pretty bad, its not even 1 year.

I have the cliq on a mexican carrier… can’t update. error line 1… aparently it validates the build number on the phone :/

  • MC

I was one of those who got early access to the upgrade. Outside of some confusion as to whether Moto meant, “Uninstall the SD card,” or, “Disconnect the phone from the computer’s USB,” the installation went smoothly. I reinstalled all my junk, then went to play a game to see if there was any truth to 2.1 being noticably faster than the now-antiquated 1.5. Answer: maybe.
BUT, then, bringing back hideous memories from the past, the phone experienced a hard shut-down reminiscent of what happened when I tried to use the camera or any camera-dependent app. I bought this guy in December, 2009 and went through FOUR Resets – and two months of attempts by Motorola and T-Mobile to find a cure.
After this experience, I am now convinced there’s an HTC in my future. Since I’m stuck with Cliq for now, though, I reset it back to 1.5, then updated back to 2.1 – via YouTube advisor! And THAT works just fine!

  • http://Website Kimbo

2.1 seems to be faster to me. One thing I noticed is that Dolphin HD is locking up my phone occasionally, but otherwise things are good so far.

    • MC

Dolphin HD is my Default browser – and I’ve never had a problem with it. I’ve also downloaded several add-ons that also work flawlessly. I experienced my shutdown while exitting, “Bonsai Blast” – a game I’d also never had a problem with before.

    No longer available .. booo!!!!

I was able to download the update during the small window of opportunity this past Friday & have had a chance to play around with it all weekend. To make a long story short its worth the upgrade. Makes the Cliq feel modern & not like an antique. I don’t feel it makes it any faster unfortunately but at the least does make it fun again. This still doesn’t change my mind on Motorola or how they have left the Cliq community down for so long. Of course no more Moto in my future. It does have a few bugs but not enough to make your phone frustrating to use. Its fine for day to day usage and the new Motoblur features are welcoming. I’m sorry for not getting into detail on the new features or general use of the update. The list would be to long to even start on. One thing I will say is that they’re are more PROS than cons. If you do have a chance to download it I say go for it! Enjoy and best wishes my Cliq comrades. :D
