Android 2.2 users can finally edit Google Docs on the go

Have you ever wanted to edit your Google Docs while on the go? Google just rolled out an update for Android 2.2 users that allows them to edit documents from anywhere at anytime. One of the coolest features is that edits made from your mobile device appear in near real-time from a web browser so multiple users can collaborate on a single document at the same time. Check out the demo video after the jump.

Example uses of Google Docs editing on the got includes:

  • You can work on that important memo…while on the bus or train to work.
  • If you’re behind on a group proposal, but really want to make it to the ball game tonight, your whole team can work on it from the bleacher seats.
  • You can take minute-by-minute notes at a concert so you’ll always remember the setlist. And your friends can jealously follow in real-time at home.
  • …and the list goes on!

This is AWESOME. Can someone please give it a go on the Galaxy Tab? I’d love to see how it works on the larger and higher resolution screen.

    100% win.

Is there a reason why this is limited only to android 2.2? It seems just like a web-app to me…so shouldn’t it work in 2.1 and such as well (especially since it works on the iPad and presumably the iPhone too)?

I think it’s because the browser from 2.2 is different from 2.1
There was a huge improvement over performance on 2.2 browser

Of course this all presumes usage of Google Docs for work related documents… which most of the corporate world won’t use… i’d rather see Android become more usable in the business world… otherwise it’s just an expensive toy.

I certainly wouldn’t mind having an offline, open, full-featured office suite coming with my phone, but until that day comes, Docs To Go has been serving me pretty well. I suppose a corporation wouldn’t mind having to spend an additional $15—$30 for that, be it Docs To Go, QuickOffice or whatever other solution.

Not working for me… no button on top right.

The mobile Google Docs site looks exactly like it did last week. I can still only edit spreadsheets. I’m using an N1 with 2.2.1.

Google blog post says “We’re rolling this out over the next few days.”

      • Tebbe

Yeah, I just saw that on one of their twitter feeds. I forget that they can roll something like that out gradually and I have no patience anymore.

Taylor – check your sources next time, its not currently available for 2.2 users, but will be soon… tiny difference. sorry for the nitpick.

No, it’s being rolled out, meaning some people can already use it. If you want to be picky neither him (“just rolled out”) nor you are correct.

Its not working for me…. On my G2, Android 2.2. Is there some option we have to enable?

Awesome! Prior to this the only option was the pro version of Docs to Go.

pretty useless considering you can’t create a new document from the phone. i’ve been waiting for ages to be able to replace Evernote with Google Docs, and this is just disappointing. With all the rumours about a native Android application for Google Docs, and now this…

i can’t believe no-one else has brought this up

One more reason I want my next android phone to have a physical keyboard…oooh! Bluetooth keyboards might be reasonable to use on my phone now!

A week after release, on my htc desire with 2.2 I can create document but later I cannot edit it.
It could be so awesome (disappointed)

Still not working for me on HTC Desire Android 2.2. There’s no edit button when viewing a document and the create button lets me go through the motions of creating a document but then doesn’t actually create it.

I know Google stuff is free and you shouldn’t moan but whats the point in announcing something to be available, making a video of someone editing a doc on a phone and then a month later it’s still not working?

Can create but not edit on desire 2.2.

Those that are frustrated would have been much happier, presumably, if they’d been in the first days of the roll out… but would you prefer Google to roll out to all when done or in waves to get some users on sooner? I’d go for the latter every time, as frustrating as it can be at times.
