Android Market update coming soon, what features do you want?

Google hinted last week that they were about to introduce some new Android Market features (that they think you’ll like) and today we learn that could happen as soon as this week. In an email to Android developers, Google said the Market will be down for six hours on November 18th and that some services would be unavailable.

We don’t know what new features are coming but the two things we have been waiting on are the web version of the Market and PayPal support. It was rumored that PayPal was coming in October, but that never happened. Google showed off the online Market at Google I/O in May (see video below), but we have heard nothing since then.

Looking at the stats from AppAware, we can see that Google has been silently updating the Market client for many users so the coming changes might already be on your phone and we are just waiting for Google to flip the switch.

What do you think Google is working on for the Android Market? What are the missing features you hope they ad? Will we finally see Google Music? I just want coupon codes and I’ll be happy.

A Notification from Android Market: Planned Maintenance Outage

Hello,

We’re writing to inform you about a planned service outage impacting Android Market that requires your attention.

We plan to perform maintenance on the Android Market Developer Console on Thursday 18 November 2010 from 10AM to 4PM Pacific Standard Time. During this time, there will be view-only access to the Developer Console at http://market.android.com/publish. You will be able to view your list of applications and error reports; however, you will not be able to upload new apps or make updates to existing apps. The publish status of your applications and use of the Android Market app on phones should not be impacted.

Thanks, and we appreciate your patience while we work to improve Android Market.

Regards,
The Android Market Team

I’d like to see an Android Market comment rating system implemented.

I’d also like to see updates failing less often. Sometimes it takes 2-3 reinstall tries to get an app update on my Desire…
Also, of course a web version (with Cloud2Device support so you can install an app on your android phone from your browser) and paypal / international provider billing support would be awesome. I would also welcome apps that install more quickly and don’t make my phone lag in the process.

Ability to bookmark apps and to be able to easily share market links.

    • http://androidandme.com Taylor Wimberly

OMG yes! I still don’t know why the official Market does not have sharing.

      • http://webosworld.com Sueprsonical

the HTC evo has a great sharing app that came with the 2.2 OTA update

        • http://Website sixohtew

as did my HTC incredible 2.2 update.. i use it all the time, it just sends as a message or link to anything and anyone running android, i sent TiKL ptt to my buddy with a samsung moment on only 1.6 and he got it and we used it right after… btw great app lol

          • Andr3w

The Moment never had 1.6. It went straight from 1.5 to 2.1 in April…Sorry but the Moment is my phone. I don’t like to see it being dissed. Ha.

I’d like better “app discovery”, Carrier payments, Paypal payments, and a cleaner look. Thats all that comes to mind, the Markets not that bad.

    • http://Website Albert

No, please!! I see your point, but… keep the carriers away from Android!! Let them be that… just carriers…

  • http://androidandme tommytmo

Being able to pay cash at any check-out counter for an android market gift card to be used for pay apps would be nice.

    • http://androidandme.com Taylor Wimberly

Ah my 3rd biggest complaint! Give us gift cards so we can gift apps this Christmas. I would buy a ton if they were available.

  • http://abductiongame.wordpress.com Psym

Better market error messages. A huge issue for developers selling in a foreign currency is that when a credit card payment fails due to the card refusing a foreign currency transaction (approx 15% of orders) the phone still shows the app as purchased and just fails the download.

80% of the support enquiries we have to deal with are due to this issue.

Any way to know if Market on my phone has been updated?

    • http://Website Steffen

      settings>applications>manage applications>all>market

Then check the the version. If your version number>1.82, you have been updated. I think I’ve read the new version number is 2.12? Anyone confirm?

      • http://Website B2L

If that’s true i have the new market then. I just Checked and my market version is 2.12

  • http://Website charrion

Still waiting for filtering, coupon codes and what tommytmo said.

  • http://Website JJL84

A better search algorithm. It needs to have suggestions based on what you searched for. It seems to have gotten better, but a lot of times if you enter keywords that are close to the app you want, it turns up with nothing.

Also, it would be nice to have a well executed way to find new apps. Sometimes there are really good apps that go unnoticed because it’s a daunting task to sort through all of them.

  • http://Website Warden Chinbach

If this is another false alarm I think I’m going to have a heart attack.

  • http://Website watbetch

I’d like a more reliable market.

The Bill to my T-Mobile account option has disappeared for no reason. Can’t get it back..

“Network Errors” on WiFi, 3G or EDGE

Terrible search, you should be able to list search by popularity/rating/downloads etc.

    A better widget

  • http://Website Don

Add sorting options.. (within categories) by # of downloads, price, rating, date released, alphabetical, etc

  • http://Website debosmebo

Sorting apps by rating/alphabetic should be implemented. I have quite a few apps and hate that I have to search through my downloaded app.

  • http://www.BestAndroidAppsReview.com Dana D.

    1) Website
    2) Live search (updates drop-down as you type)
    3) Enhanced categories
    4) Personalized recommendations
    5) Change logs

  • http://Website Mark

An entire overhaul of the search system in the Market. I can’t believe a product made by one of the biggest and most successful search companies in the world doesn’t have adequate search. It’s ridiculous how you sometimes have to type the exact name of the app or capitalization etc.

    • PhineasJW

Completely agree. For the world leader in search, the Market search functionality is a complete and total embarrassment.

  • http://Website DonnDee

How about real Applications comparable to Iphone??? Iphones has all the games and apps……….then iphone gets them 1 year later……..and 1 out of 100 that iphone has. Its a Joke there might as well not be a market!!!!!

GARBAGE GARBAGE GARBAGE…. I regret getting rid of my iphone for a ANDROID phone!!!

    • MorphiusFaydal

This is not a Google issue, and something they have no control over. It’s a developer issue – they don’t want to bother porting the app to Android. If you want to see something that’s available on iOS on Android, e-mail the app developer and ask them to bring the app to Android.

    • http://Website Mark

You can always switch back. I’m sure you miss your master Jobs telling you what apps you can and can’t have and how to use your iPhone. I’m sure you also miss AT&T’s spotty network, having to hold your phone in a certain way to be able to talk. Yeah, I’m sure you miss those. >_>

    • http://Website Richard

Donn Dee: You sound just like the typical..JACK…iPhone user all the garbage that exist in the Apple store is SHAMEFUL. Android Market is fine and will get better over time. Meanwhile every android devices just BLOWS PAST YOUR CRAPPY IPHONE 3G AND IPHONE 4…YOU AND YOUR IPHONE IS A JOKE

  • MorphiusFaydal

I would like to see more category options, particularly in the Games section. Sections for racing, multiplayer, RPG, FPS, etc. Make it easier to find something specific.

    • http://Website Mark

Instead of more categories, we need tags on apps. That way it will be easier to find a game. All you need to search for is “RPG” and it will pull up all the games tagged with RPG. A better way to discover new games.

      • MorphiusFaydal

I like that idea too. Categories works for just browsing, tags works when you’re trying to find something. :)

        How about both? ^_^

  • http://Website wburbage

THE INTENET? I CAN’T BELIEVE IT WILL HAVE THE INTERNET. This is actually really cool stuff. Can’t wait till I have my dual-core phone running some of these things.

  • http://www.AllSanDiegoComputerRepair.com SDscorch

yeah.. a web-based version of the market would be great

a way to back up your apps automatically, so when you replace your phone (or you get a new one, everything reloads

an “expanded” view so you can SEE all these thousands upon thousands of apps that are available — dunno how to actually do that but.. i always have this feeling that i’m only seeing a thimble full of the ocean of apps that are available……………………………..

  • http://Website milt

App for xvid and digs…..maybe a vocal app

  • http://Website Jordan

pretty much an entire overhaul lol

the worst thing about android remains the app market, it’s unintuitive, way too simplistic (whats with the categories), and the organisation is either silly or outdated (Solitaire is still always in the list, when i’m looking for actually good apps :P )

its the only area where iOS wins: Appstore

  • http://Website donnydee

developers dont make apps because of googles DRM issue.

  • http://Website Keith

How about the ability to tell that the upgrade your about to install is for an app installed on your sd card, and either prevent you from trying and failing to update, the app – or better still fix the bug already!

    Hello,

We’re writing with an update about a planned service outage impacting Android Market that requires your attention.

We had previously sent you an email that notified you about an upcoming maintenance outage. Unfortunately, that email contained a significant mistake about the timing of the maintenance:

We plan to perform maintenance on the Android Market Developer Console starting at 10PM on THURSDAY 18 November and ending by 4AM FRIDAY 19 November 2010, Pacific Standard Time.

Some type of filtering or categorical search. I dont want to type in Live Wallpaper and get one hundred returns from a DEVELOPER named Live Wallpaper who spams the market.

  • http://Website Welldon John

It’s look great but it’s not what I waiting for, except for web market.
I guess they improve apps download, rating and add a country or language filter

In app purchases NEEEEED, had to implement Google checkout instead and it isnt a very nice user experience

On my G1 (with Android 1.6) market was updated to version 2007 several times but I needed to uninstall it each time because Market stopped to work for me ;-) So maybe those people who have updated Market are in similar situation like me? ;-)
Btw. last time I unistalled update to Market more than week ago and from this time I have old version ;-)

  • http://Website Paul Atreides

A lot of great recommendations here! Another good idea would be to make an adult content category instead of letting devs dump that stuff any and everywhere. My 5 yr old loves my EVO, and I would love if they also added a category for all the apps aimed toward children. How about recomendations based on download history as well?

    • http://Website Mark

Nice suggestions although I think the “recommendations” one might not be seen for some time to come.

  • http://Website Ben 1.0

I think being able to search apps in alphabetical order and by rating would be a great addition.

  • http://Website Chris

I would like a more direct method to see my downloaded apps. I prefer an on screen link, rather than going through the menu. Very simple, little minor thing, but that is what it is all about.

  • http://Website Paul Atreides

Just read that there’s the possibility of videos coming to the market. I would love to see these apps/games in action before installing them. Filtering by star rating would be a big plus too.

  • http://Website Billl

I’m still waiting for ability to run all my updates/installs in one batch.

  • http://asurroca.com asurroca

I kind of just want Google to buy AppBrain and merge it into the Market. They’ve done a fantastic job picking up where the Market leaves off, adding a lot of the functionality Google showed off at I/O like installing from the web. I’d say the AppBrain team has earned the payday.

  • http://Website jakers

To me, this seems very basic: within every application description, I’d LOVE to see a list explaining the need for any permissions.
Why this isn’t done already baffles me.

  • http://Website Axess Denyd

Hope it doesn’t break it for people…. I have had the market update pushed to me a couple of times, and I had to uninstall the update both times, because I could no longer install/anything…it failed 100% of the time.

This was on a Mytouch 1.2 running 1.6. I put Cyanogen 6 on there yesterday and it is much, much nicer so far.

  • krazytrixxxsta

AMAZING there nothing more to say after that.

  • g.isreal

A few suggestions, coming from a G2 owner.

    - better landscape mode. things get cramped.
    - tags in apps. Help searches.
    - more screen shots.
    - a “recommended” section.
    - ability to share apps with my android buddies.

Just a few off the top.
