Hands on the LG Star [VIDEO]

Earlier today we took a closer look at the benefits of dual-core processors, but what about the actual devices you will be able to buy in stores? We know the LG Star is coming soon and have seen some leaked pictures, but GSM Israel just blew the roof off with a 7-minute hands on video. Get the goods after the jump.

What do you guys think? Anyone picking this up over the Motorola Olympus/Etna?

    Yea, I thought the same. Used all that space for some touch buttons. That was not needed. Video is still interesting. The browser was still choppy scrolling wise. It loaded fast for having flash I say that. I expected better touch response on the scrolling through the browser. I assume it’s still early stages of course. I hope 2.3 helps it out or even Honeycomb. Android has so much potential. It’s really just missing that quality good feeling. A solid overall OS. We will get there, cause we have the hardware to back it up.

      Yeh Android 2.2 isn’t yet optimized for the dual-cores yet either though. And reason for the touch response not as fast as the iPhone isn’t hardware based it’s just that Android doesn’t have UI hardware acceleration yet(iPhone does) which has been rumored to be in Honeycomb and also just be much prettier, can’t wait!!

        Bezel does not automatically transmit to like apple. Jesus christos people come on.
        
        Anyways Honeycomb is supposed to be for tablets and gingerbread for smartphones. So its likely no handset will see honeycomb but gingerbread should be the same in their own right.

      Well, it’s your choice to load up Flash. Flash actually does extra stuff out of the browser, so it’s expected to slow things down a touch.
      
      If you turned off Flash (gimping your web experience), you’re going likely going to get the same smoothness.

  Lol in case you had not heard benchmarks don’t mean sh@t. There are kernals that can simply trick the processors to speed up and give fake results. Kinda how I’m getting 2400 on quadrant with my evo. Means absolutely nothing.

Hm this scrolling doesn’t seem very smooth. A dualcore should handle flash without a lag at scrolling i think…

  Speculation says you won’t see dual core performance until 2.3 or whatever update allows android to take full advantage of the second core. Give it time.

Meh.

Why they would want to copy touchwiz is completely beyond me. LG doesn’t get to just jump right in to the game again because they are slapping a dual core in a phone. They haven’t made a compelling phone since the Dare, IMHO. If this does well, I’ll wait for it’s eventual succesor the LG Star Touch. The browser looks about the same speed as the iPhone….that doesn’t bode well as the dual core is supposedly going to make web browsing faster.

I think I’ll stick with either Moto or HTC, have a fascinate now and already feel a bit burned however I might want to love it.

  Check out the LG Optimus One. It is the best entry-level Android phone I have tested and most U.S. carriers have it free on contract.
  
  I’m impressed with LG’s recent efforts and I’m excited to get my hands on the Star.

    I agree and I”m surprised LG is starting to step up to the plate. For an Entry level phone, the Optimus line is very nice build and quality.

    From what I have heard, it is a decent entry-level android phone. It does what it need to do. That being said, one would not expect that much from an entry-level phone like that. I had the Droid since release and now have a Fascinate on a month to month contract. I can completely bide my time until something comes out that is amazing. Hoping something with this kind of tech, with vanilla 2.3 comes to VZW. But that is a pipe dream. This, the Etna, the Incredible HD..all will make a compelling choice to make.

  Good job judging the phone even though it’s not even finalized. 2.2 isn’t optimized for dual cores, as has been stated before. I say you reserve your judgement until this is on 2.3 or 3.0

    By the time this, or any of the new phones have 2.3 or 3.0 (aside from the Nexus S), the next wave of new phones will be out. I give my judgment based on LG’s track record…which has not been that impressive over the past few years. I would be saying the same thing about a Samsung phone.
    
    The UI IS a copy of touchwiz. I personally am tired of all the custom UI’s manufacturers deem necessary to slap onto these phones. I get that they are trying to differentiate themselves, but let the consumer decide if they want a custom UI or stock android. And don’t go into the whole, “you can root it or put Launcher Pro on it”.
    
    Lastly, this is a forum for opinion based on the preview video we just saw. I am more than allowed to give a judgment based on that, TYVM. :)

Anyone notice that the back of this phone says Google instead off (with Google).

Only the Nexus phones have the Google branding without ‘with’. Does this mean anything?

I just watched a guy handle a cell phone for 7 minutes while talking in a language I don’t even understand. I need a meeting.

Touchwiz is not ugly imo. Finally happy with my phones UI after switching from htc desire to samsung galaxy. The lg star’s UI seems nice a well.

I hate the Android low battery noise! Scares me everytime.

I think I’ll pass on this one purely for the fact that I don’t like the way the hardware looks. I wish HTC would make a Tegra 2 phone on Verizon. Maybe the Incredible HD will have the Tegra 2.

To all those wanting a translation, he wasn’t saying anything you don’t already know (dual-core, HDMI, etc). The only things of note that I recall were his mentioning repeatedly that the build quality was very high, even contrasting it at one point to the relatively low-quality feel that the Galaxy S has, and that as it was a test unit, it was still running Android 2.2 instead of 2.3 (which you probably saw him point out anyway).

It’s a nice device. Looks like a newer version of the Sprint HTC Hero that dropped last year. The chrome on the back is a bit much, but I wouldn’t complain. Also, I’m totally with everyone on being super supportive of bone stock Android. I like some of the additional widgets and UI tweaks some of the UIs are providing, but I want a faster and seamless way of getting upgraded to the next version of the OS. By the way, will LG be making any 4G WiMAX/CDMA Android 2.3+ phones in 2011?

Hey guys…. I had one LG android phone before. Please, do not buy it. LG will give you any support to it. Dot expect LG to upgrade Android. They will always promise the upgrade but it will never be released .

So let me get this straight, From most of the comments that I read about the UI, everyone seems to sing in unison that they like it and it looks fresh and slick etc. Samsung Touchwiz anyone? looks identical to my Samsung vibrant which everyone ragged on because of its similarity to the Iphone. what’s changed in 6 months?
