First Unreal Engine game for Android, Dungeon Defenders, now available

Over the Christmas holiday the first Unreal Engine game for Android was released and it offers the best 3D graphics I have seen on an Android phone. Dungeon Defenders is a gorgeous 3D game that mixes tower defense gameplay with action-RPG elements. Originally we thought the game might be limited to the Tegra 2 platform, but thankfully it plays just fine on the current generation of high-end phones.

It looks like a lot of you rushed out and purchased the game because it already sold over 5,000 copies in the first couple days. If you have yet to grab it and want to show off what your phone is capable of, it is selling for only $2.99, which is well worth it.

Be warned that the game is over 600 MB and it will take you longer than the 15 minute refund window to download it. Make sure that your phone is on the suggested devices list (see below) before you attempt to purchase it. Those of you with an EVO, Droid, Incredible, or any other older device will experience some lag and should not buy the game.

I was playing Jet Car Stunts almost non-stop over the break so I didn’t log many hours in Dungeon Defenders yet, but the few games that I did play looked great and I’m anxious to dive deeper into the game.

Trendy Entertainment also just announced their PvP expansion called Dungeon Defenders: Arena. It should be out soon and allow cross-platform battles on Android and iOS. Check out the teaser trailer for an idea of what’s coming next.

If you already grabbed the game, let us know what you think. Do you agree that the Unreal Engine offers the best graphics on Android?

Suggested Devices:

  • Best: All Tegra 2 Based Devices
  • High-End: Nexus S, Samsung Galaxy Tab, Samsung Galaxy S phones
  • Mid-Range: T-Mobile G2, Droid X, Droid 2

Minimum Requirements:

  • 512 MB RAM (256 free at runtime)
  • GPU capable of OpenGL ES 2.0
  • Android 2.1
  • 800 Mhz CPU or greater recommended
  • SD card with at least 600 MB free storage

From Trendy Entertainment: “Take on the role of one of four distinct Hero classes, and battle hordes of invading creatures by strategically summoning a variety of Towers & Traps throughout your Castle. Directly partake in the action-packed combat with your hero, while leveling up, gathering tons of loot, customizing & upgrading equipment, and developing your class abilities.

All of this can be played in seamless online GameCenter multiplayer, as you cooperate and compete throughout the Campaign & Challenge Missions to build the strongest heroes and achieve the highest scores in the online kingdom.

Combining the depth of strategic gaming with the satisfying action of RPG character building, in a beautifully stylized ‘toon fantasy setting built with Epic Games’ Unreal Engine 3, DD is designed to be an addictive experience for casual and veteran gamers alike!”

The game is great but the upcoming expansion with the PvP Arena and soon the ability for users to make Mods for the game is really going to make this one hell of a fun game in the near future.

Well I can’t even get the game to log me in soo… :(

Okay so you have to login with your sub-account name not your email. Grats me.

The game is awesome. Here’s the deal though: if you’re going to play it seriously at the moment, you need a Galaxy S or Galaxy Tab/Viewsonic G Tab device. I have a Droid X and it’s frustrating cause it skips so bad while online — which is the best way to play.

Basically, once that LG Star / Optimus 2x drops, this game will run super-smooth. Until then, it’s just a little better than a slideshow :(

    Still it’s the most fun I’ve had spending $2.99 in a while…

Haven’t got it yet, but i think this game would run the best on nexus s, galaxy s’s, tegra 2(way better), mytouch 4g(best benchark for now so it should run smoothly), and it’s cousin the desire hd. Those are the devices that would run it the best, and then there are devices that would run it fine like the g2, DInc, Droid x, and etc.

    • http://Website james

Thanks for the dhd mention. These devs don’t put them on lists it seems despite being HTC European flagship.

Think it must be an American thing..

Wow! The Droid 2 has barely been out for half a year and it’s not longer considered “high-end.”

    • http://Website Lucian Armasu

That’s because they release about the same chip for a year, and then they release others that are significantly better. So if you buy a phone with a chip that was already on the market for 6 months, then yeah it will get obsolete after 6 months. Even worse if you buy a phone with a chip that’s been available on the market for 11-12 months. It’s like buying a single core phone right now, when dual cores are around the corner.

So the Droid X is all of a sudden mid-range according to the developers of this game? Interesting!

    • http://Website ncb1397

In terms of GPU, the Droid X is definately mid-range. PowerVR SGX530 < PowerVR SGX540 on Galaxy S by about a mile.

I purchased it for the G2. It runs great single player. I have not put any multiplayer time in yet.

  • http://Website adrian

Runs kind of choppy on the T-Mobile g2. I thought the adreno 205 would be able to handle this but it does an ok job. Tried it on my dads galaxy s and it ran smooth as butter with the video upscaler as highest it would go. I regret purchasing this g2!

    • http://Website Lucian Armasu

This is why you shouldn’t trust silly benchmark tools like Quadrant or even Neocore, but how the chip actually does with real games. Even though it scored almost the same as the Hummingbird GPU, the hummingbird GPU is still at least 30% better than the Adreno 205 when it comes to real gaming. Anandtech showed that Hummingbird GPU was doing much better playing Quake 3 than Adreno 205.

The Nexus 1 is more than 350 days old….. It´s a great phone but it´s age begins to show

      A happy Nexus One owner.

      • http://Website Lucian Armasu

The phone age is less relevant than the chip’s age. Nexus One was released a year ago but Evo was released 6 months ago, yet they are both as old when it comes to playing this game because they use the same chip. If you’re going to buy a phone, buy one that has a high-performance chip that just started appearing in products on the market – if you want to be as future proof as possible that is.

On a side note, I hope HTC starts using Tegra 2 or other CPU’s and GPU’s because there’s no way I’m going to buy another phone from them if they keep using the Qualcomm’s crappy GPU’s that only look good on paper and in benchmark tools but fail when it comes to real usage.

        • http://Website Bill

Shrug. It stutters a bit on my nexus one. But it does run. Worse on online play but offline it fine.

        • http://Website ncb1397

The 3rd Gen Snapdragons have been sampling for manufactures since Q3 of this year and have the Adreno 220 GPU in them. Performance is supposed to be on par with Tegra SoC and PowerVR SGX 540(80 million triangles/sec and 500 megapixels/sec).

  • http://Website Adam of Troy

15 minute window should be from COMPLETION of download, not inception. But that’s just my two cents…

    • http://Website sschrupp

Yeah, I imagine when they made this new rule that they didn’t take into account that there would be cases like this. In fact, I wouldn’t be surprised if that actually is the rule that the 15 minutes doesn’t start until after you download. It only takes a few seconds to download the game to your phone. But after you download and it “installs” it’s really only installed the installer that you then run when you start the game the first time… lol

In any case, the 15 minute rule needs to be clarified and adjusted to take into account things like this.
