Official PlayStation app for Android coming very soon to European countries

Today Sony announced on the EU PlayStation Blog that an official PlayStation app is coming to Android phones very soon. Unfortunately, this app is not for playing games like the rumored PlayStation Phone, but it will connect to the PlayStation Network and allow you to keep up with your friends, discover new games for your PS3, and read announcements from Sony.

The first version of the app will be available “very soon” in the UK, France, Germany, Spain, Italy and The Netherlands. Thankfully the app will run on all devices with Android 1.6 or higher so it should work fine on all those Sony Ericsson X10 phones that are still using an outdated version of Android.

Sony Europe says that the app has not been announced for North America, but we expect that will change soon. They also note that more unannounced features are planned for this app, so be on the lookout for a few surprises. If you want to keep up with any U.S. announcements, head over to The Official PlayStation Blog and monitor it for updates.

In version 1.0 of the PlayStation app you’ll be able to:

  • Check out your PlayStation Network trophies and keep up to date with your friends’ games and online status.
  • Discover all the latest games, news and hardware for your PlayStation 3, PSP and PlayStation 2.
  • Read all the announcements on the European PlayStation.Blog.
  • Share your favourite products or news with your friends on Facebook, Twitter or via e-mail.

It’d be nice to use my evo as a remote control to watch movies and navigate the xmb.

Now obviously, the more features it has the better the app will be. However, being able to see what friends are online and what games they are playing is enough for me to want the app.

this is Sonys answer to ms integration of xbox into wp7.

  • keridel

do you think MS will do one as well?

    • Alan Reboli

Lol no, they have the wm7 phones to support.

the WP7 xbox integration is one of its main selling features, if they made an Android / Iphone app, there would be less reason to buy WP7, so i dont see an M$ coming any time soon

Allow me to run my PSP minis over my PS3 to my DHD and im a happy man. I say run from PS3 as I know they wont allowed full games on the android. Too hackable and you know how paranoid Sony can get (removal of Linux support on PS3 for example).

Still something else to stick in the face of windows phone users :D

there is no real reason why Sony wont create an WP7 app, and it would be mad or M$ to reject it. but i think M$ wouldn’t allow a PS3 app on there device’s.
