Sprint tweets FroYo updating coming to Samsung Epic 4G as soon as possible

On the week that Samsung customer frustration hit an all time high, T-Mobile finally announced their Android 2.2 update for their Galaxy S and now Sprint has tweeted they are working to deliver it to their Epic 4G as soon as possible.

Sprint emphasized that the FroYo update for the Epic 4G still has to pass their rigorous testing criteria to ensure a quality experience. A near-final test build leaked out in December so Sprint has been working on this update for awhile. Hopefully the tweet is a sign that the update could arrive before the end of the month.

Now we will wait and see how long it takes the other carriers to get their Galaxy S updates out. Verizon has a pretty good track record so I think that Fascinate owners should see an upgrade soon and there is no telling how long it will take AT&T to update the Captivate.

I can only hope that it doesn’t take Samsung this long to deliver their base Android 2.3 upgrade for the Galaxy S to the carriers. Anyone want to bet when we will see Gingerbread on the Galaxy S?

Update: Sprint issued the following note on their community blogWe want to assure you that Froyo for the Epic 4G is still in the works. Sprint works very closely with our manufacturing partners to ensure that we deliver the best possible customer experience on our wireless devices. We approve the release of software updates when a new software version provided by the manufacturer can bring a better overall customer experience on the device. It is our intention to bring these updates to our customers as quickly as possible but only after they meet our rigorous testing criteria.

We can’t provide any guidance on an exact or estimated release date at this time, but please know we are working to get Froyo out for the Epic as quickly as possible.

Before you all think I am backing up Samsung, I am not! I have a Transform and it’s stuck in the past and probably always will be. I am running Android 2.1 and I can’t wait to upgrade to a phone that’s NOT samsung.

      • http://Website watbetch

The Transform has 2.1 because of Sprint bloatware mainly Sprint I.D… also, why would you even get a phone with 2.1 in the last few months if you need 2.2? Don’t count on your phone getting flash player when it does either.

    • http://goo.gl/tQ2E wwJOSHdo

Holy Shit! Way to freaking go Samsung! you posted a TWEET about the Fascinate getting an upgrade. And it was NOT an update! And update would be 2.2 FROYO or maybe even the current Android OS 2.3! Yet after doing a tiny bit of research (search twitter “verizon fascinate update” it was just a minor update that’s causing a LOT of people trouble! Way to freaking go Samsung. Can I delete my previous post please? just when I thought one samsung phone was getting LAST YEARS UPDATE, it wasn’t. What can you expect from a phone with the Samsung logo on it!

i will never get a samsung phone in my whole fuckin’ life

  • http://Website chewtoy

So actually, they’re pushing it back *again* — “coming soon” seems nearer than “asap”.

Funny how if they would just take off all that stupid touchwiz BZ, then they could just release a stock rom with their drivers and be done with it much more quickly. And then the next upgrade would go quickly too. And the next…

And hey, Sprint, KEEP YOUR FRAKKIN’ HANDS OUT OF IT. NO ONE WANTS YOUR STUPID CRAPWARE ON THEIR PHONES. WE DON’T WANT TO READ “the latest news from Sprint”.

  • http://Website Rob

They have been tweeting for weeks the ASAP tap dance. Instead, they need to communicate with their customers and say something like “we are shooting for Feb 1″ and if they don’t make it then say so! We can understand trouble, delays, problems but being silent shows incompetence.

    Their customer service is TERRIBLE.

Had a evo, gave it to wife and bought a epic. Just realized that htc is a cell phone company and samsung also builds oven and dishwashers. The evo is far better except for lack of keyboard. If samsung doesn’t update soon, my phone will be featured on “will it blend”

They were saying the update would come “soon after launch” on and around the August 31st release date. Then it’s rumored release in November came and went and they kept saying “coming soon”. Now, 5 months after “soon after launch”, they are saying “as quickly as possible”.

Samsung’s words are as reliable as the updates there are being used on.

    Samsung really sucks

  • http://Website Bryan

Well, Samsung has lost a customer for life with me. I spent $250 for a second rate phone. Honestly at this point they need to just get rid of all their bloated software and put their addon software up on the market, USE THE SYSTEM GOOGLE CREATED!! Then there wouldn’t be an update issue at all and we’d all have 2.3 now. And if you want samsung apps or sprint apps, you can dl it.
