Verizon details additional 49 markets to get 4G LTE in the first half of 2011

Verizon just announced four new Android phones take advantage of their 4G LTE network and now we are learning more details of their network expansion.

The initial deployment included 38 markets and went live in December. Now our friends at Droid Life have discovered an additional 49 markets that are scheduled for the first half of this year. Verizon is expected to cover 140 markets by the end of 2011, so another 50 cities should be announced for the second half of this year.

The main thing many of us are now waiting to find out is the price of 4G data. Verizon is charging $50 for 5 GB and $80 for 10 GB on their 4G USB modems, but we do not know if it will be different for handsets.

Here is the list of cities expected to see 4G LTE sometime in the first half of this year:

  you do realize that $50 for 5GB is for the Mobile Broadband and in no way shape or form has anything to do with smartphones right?
  
  infact when Verizon went to LTE and introduced the 4G mobile broadband plans the price actually decreased $10 bucks over the former 3G plans. But of course you knew that and weren’t bitching for the sake of bitching right?
  
  btw smartass, here is current prices from every other carrier
  
  Sprint – $59 – 5GB
  T-Mobile – $39 – 5GB
  AT&T – $60 – 5GB
  
  So with the exception of T-Mobile, Verizon has the cheaper data plan for mobile broadband. It’s ok though continue to spread more fud around.

    Where did you get 39 from tmobile from? I have Tmobile and mine is 24 dollars, and the 5 gig isn’t a cap, you just get knocked down to edge speeds is all. And while that sounds silly, I tried one month to see how much bandwidth I could use, I watched youtube, streamed pandora almost non stop and couldn’t use more than 600 meg. I’m pretty sure the only way you could go over 5 gig is if you were sharing the internet with your entire household.

    HSPA+ is better? What kind of dope are you guys smoking. Teen mobile is advertising 21 mbps and are averaging around 5 mbps. While Verizon is advertising 5-12 mbps and are reaching above 20 mbps. So yeah how is it better. Go suck teen mobiles dick you idiots.

      it is showing 20 with a network with no strain on it nobody has Verizon devices yet but with T-mobile HSPA+ you are getting the least right now it will only get better when they boost to 42. SInce Tmobiles is backwards compatible when they upgrade they already have millions on the network so any test is real world as Verizons is perfect conditions.

I have never seen anyone reach anywhere near 21mbps, you really think they are going to reach 42mbsp. LMFAO dude get real, teen mobile sucks and you know it. HSPA+ 42, need I say more! Not only is it the answer to the Ultimate Question of Life, the Universe, and Everything, but it is BACKWARDS compatible, will be available in 2X more markets, and T-Mobile will not charge a premium for it. VZ=fail

  Yes, theoretically it can reach those speeds. In real life? I don’t think it’ll get that close. Backwards compatible? HSPA+ will be but only up to 7.2mbps if I’m not mistaken. These Verizon prices are currently for the modems, so we can’t be sure if they’ll be the same prices for handsets. If they are, then it’s ridiculous. But I highly doubt it.

    In real life, speeds will be in mid 20s, or faster. Take it from someone in the know. Backwards compatible = not having a (X only) handset to take advantage of the speeds. All T-Mobile 3G or 4G handsets regardless of plan, manufacture, max throughput, etc. will see a performance enhancement.

LTE itself is pretty good. The problem is that Verizon’s current 3G is absolutely terrible. So that means you’re screwed if you don’t live in one of their markets (like myself in Kansas City) or don’t have a 4G phone (which is the vast majority of Verizon’s phones).

This is why HSPA+ is much better. A) It’s faster than LTE and B) Even non-4G phones are backwards compatible and can at least receive a benefit from the 4G speeds.

Verizon Fail. Even@ the speeds we had a few months ago some people reached 10Mbps on T-Mobile. & T-Mobile has HSPA+ 21 Now, & will have HSPA+ 42 Mbps by the end for the year. & BIGGER FAIL @ Verizon putting Sprint above T-Mobile on the speed test when we (T-Mobile) have been tested to obliterate Sprint’s WiMax network speeds on numerous occasions & in various markets.

I have been thru 2 thunderbolts with 2 different sim cards, now I have a droid charge. I live in Dillon sc. I get terrible reception here at home, lots of dropped calls. If I go to Florence sc or Myrtle Beach sc the phones work fine. I have to say that verizon has been very good to me with trying to make things right with me. As for the phones, I like the Thunderbolt better, and if I knew they are gonna have there 4g stuff together this year, I’d just continue to deal with the reception problems till then, but I’m starting to concider turning both these phones in, and getting the htc incredible 2 or the droid x 2. (a 3g phone) I love both the phones, but I’ll be damned if I’m gonna aim for the very best phone available and can’t even talk to anyone on it. I’d be happy to hear anyones thoughts or advice.
