First look: Modern Combat 2

I might be Gameloft’s harshest critic, but I’m also their biggest fan. There is no denying that these guys make the best games for Android, but we have so far been disappointed that few have made their way to the official Android Market. I have a feeling that will change real soon, but in the mean time we just have to accept that you can only purchase Gameloft’s games via their online store.

Gameloft’s Modern Combat 2: Black Pegasus just went live today and you can grab it now for only $4.99. This is the sequel to my all-time favorite, first person shooter game on Android and it surpasses the original in every way possible. I’ve only been playing it a couple of days and I’m not even half way through yet, but MC2 offers some of the best graphics and gameplay elements of any Android game to date.

If you are a first person shooter fan and own a Samsung Galaxy S, then Modern Combat 2 is a must buy. Other high-end phones like the Droid 2, Droid X, myTouch 4G, and G2 should play the game fine, but the best gameplay experience right now is on Samsung phones.

From now until February 3rd, if you buy Modern Combat 2 from the Gameloft Android Store using the special promotional link below you can download another game absolutely free.

Update: The buy-one-get-one free promo is only for UK customers. Visit gameloft.com from you phone to see what current promos are going on for your current country.

  • Use 15 weapons from real military forces that you can now gather directly from your enemies.
  • Blur effects when taking fire and dynamic lightning on your weapon contribute to the immersion.
  • Engage in 10-player online and local confrontations.
  • Choose between 4 multiplayer modes: Battle, Team Battle, Defuse the Bomb & Capture the Flag.

    That . Looks. Sick.

Maybe so, but until they dont sell their games on the android market im not buying. The 1 download thing and their need to complicate the android ecosystem for self “gain” is ridiculous. By the time they finally release the games they will have so much competition that no one will by their games.

      • http://lettersfromdave.wordpress.com daveloft

What do you mean the one download thing. Seriously people bitch and they don’t even have the facts right. You can download the game as many times as you like. Go to my downloads on the desktop or mobile phone. Log in and select which game you would like to download.

When the hell will developers start treating Android equally to the iPhone???

This game was released back in September or October for the iPhone, which gives Gameloft no excuses for this really long wait.

There are several really fun games available on my iPod touch that aren’t available on Android, including Real Racing 2.

    • http://androidandme.com Taylor Wimberly

Hey Gameloft is actually porting the games faster and faster. 3 month wait is a lot better than 9!

      • http://Website Usman

That’s good to hear… just waiting for them to publish them to the Market.

      • http://Website Mark

Taylor, I know one reason behind the delay is the fragmation.

Do you think there’s any reason for the delayed launches besides the fragmation?

  • http://Website Mark

Hey, Taylor. I am very much interested in this game as it was through this site that I found Dungeon Defenders. However, I am wary of paying outside the market. Can you confirm the safety of the link? Thanks!

    • jivemaster

Frankly, I would not bother supporting these greedy idiots until they put these games on the market. Now that google has api’s to check for application ownership, there is no longer any excuse to not put the game on the market.

The only reason they keep it separate is because they can, which maximises their profits (they don’t have to give money to google), and the other being they can tie your game down to a single device and never allow you to use it on another without a re-purchase.

They are treating android users like second-class citizens to iphone in that regard. iphone users wouldn’t put up with that crap of having to buy for each device they buy, and neither should we.

      Tell gameloft to shove it.

      • http://Website Mark

You’re right! What was I thinking?! I’m definitely not buying and going to vote with my wallet. Greedy bastards.

      • http://lettersfromdave.wordpress.com daveloft

Stop being such a drama queen. If your moving to a new device just email or call them and they will send you new copies of the game.

      • http://Website SpottedNigel

        …Gameloft wants money.
I’m not seeing a problem with a company wanting money.
As for the 1 time download thing, well, there have been many posts around the webs of people re-downloading their games and overall having good experiences with them.
I really can’t blame them from keeping it from the market either. Even Google has admitted the market has problems, which they do intend to fix, but Gameloft is doing what they need to do which includes having a few games on the market to see what’s going on there too.

        • http://Website DP

I think they’d sell a hell of a lot of these games more if they put them in that Market. People are missing out on good games like this, and do not know who Gameloft is to go check their site. That’s the point of the app stores, and esp the new one on the Mac: Centralized place to find apps.

So I ended up buying the game for my G2. Needless to say it won’t download. It reaches about 1/4 and just stops. After a while, it says download failed. Thanks a lot, Gameloft. P.S. I don’t know why they force us to use wifi to download resources when the HSPA+ on my phone is wayyyy faster than my wifi network.

      • http://lettersfromdave.wordpress.com daveloft

You can tonally download over 3G. When it says you must download over WiFi instead of selecting Yes, choose later. Then it says you can start the download by clicking OK and it will download over 3G.

        • http://lettersfromdave.wordpress.com daveloft

Nope sorry they used to let you download their games over 3G. Not anymore I guess, my mistake. How is it possible to have a home net connection slower than 3G.

          • http://Website Mark

I don’t know. I get way faster speeds on my phone for some reason.

    • http://lettersfromdave.wordpress.com daveloft

Just buy the game, it’s awesome.

Gameloft has really improved their service over the past 9 months. They got rid of the one install, one download thing which they had when they started. They added the ability to easily download your previous purchases.

They have added lots of ways to purchase the game, carrier billing, credit card, paypal, amazon checkout. Their support is also very good, they actually respond to your emails unlike other developers cough EA cough.

When they first launched I wouldn’t have recommended them, but today, that stance is just silly and leaves you without the best collection of 23 games available for Android.

  • http://Website thom

I ended up buying it and using my free game for n.o.v.a. which coincidentally I’ve been procrastinating on getting for awhile.

I really don’t think boycotting one of the best android game developers is the best of solutions, they are like taylor said starting to port these titles much faster ( likely in the interest of profit )

First phandroid and now here posting about the UK link for free android games. Unless there’s some trick to getting USA ordering that nobody’s mentioned? You should probably throw that in your post somewhere considering that most of your users are more likely USA users. If anyone knows how to get around UK ordering, please let me know!

    • http://Website thom

For some reason the link leads to the UK site, I just went online to gameloft on my g2 and clicked on the promo and it did the same thing

no waiting for confirmation codes or navigating third party sites.

btw thanks for the heads up!

      • http://Website cromag

I appreciate the reply. Could you elaborate? I went to gameloft.com on my Droid 2 and there was no “promo” anything, just a list of games. Was it a link? Image? Header? Footer? In a game description??

        • http://Website skilft

Same here. I went on my G2 and it led me to a UK site and prompted me to enter my phone number in order to have a confirmation code sent to me. I was skeptical seeing as it was a UK site but tried anyway. Sad to say I received no such confirmation code. Anyone got a link to a U.S. site?

        • http://Website thom

When I entered gameloft.com into my browser it recognized my device as a desire z and had a list of compatible games, at the top (header) there was a simple box for the promo.

          Hope that helps

    • http://Website Taylor

Pick another Galaxy S model and trick their system. You can send the download link from your PC.

      • http://Website Frank

Can you be a little more specific. Which did you choose? I just don’t want to buy it and have it not work. Thanks

Beautiful game i want to play this.

  • http://Website Mike

There’s two reasons that I think clearly explain why Gameloft isn’t releasing their games on the Android Market:

#1: Fragmation, because its very difficult to get games to work on all Android devices. Although developers can hide the app from phones missing certain features, they can pick and choose exactly which phones can download their apps.

Google needs to allow developers to be a lot more specific as to which phones can download their apps.

2#: Exclusives, which I highly believe is true, because Xbox 360 and PS3 very often tries to give developers extra deals to have their games as an exclusive. Phone carriers also have a lot of exclusives. So, I’m think Apple is telling developers that they will give them a special deal if they wait longer to port their games to Android and if they do something to make the Android version of the game suck.

With Gameloft, they didn’t want to make the actual gameplay suck, so then they decided to make the download process suck instead and to make us wait 4 extra months.

EA’s Reckless Racer game is a perfect example of a game launch done well. They launched the game at the same time on both operating systems and they didn’t do anything to make the Android version suck.

    • http://Website Mike

      Sorry, there’s one grammar error.

In the second paragraph, I meant to say, “… they can’t pick and choose exactly which phones can download their apps…”

    • http://lettersfromdave.wordpress.com daveloft

      WHO CARES.

      This is not a conspiracy.

Game developers often make their assets with higher quality images than what gets put in the game. What gets put in the game is compressed due to performance and or capacity reasons.

      • http://Website Mark

daveloft works for Gameloft. NO surprise that he will try to defend them….

    • http://Website Tony

      Oh bull shit.

The two images are from different spots in the game, and with the second image, the reason why the gun doesn’t look as detailed is because the gun is at angle where you see less of it.

Secondly, the graphics in the two pictures look the same in my opinion.

If you wanna complain, take a picture of the exact same spot in the game.

It also matters what phone you’re using, because if you have a high resolution display, it will look better.

    • http://lettersfromdave.wordpress.com daveloft

God you guys are pathetic and I wouldn’t be saying this like that if I worked for Gameloft.

Both of those images were released by gameloft themselves. You can see a collection of them on Pocket Gamer.

      http://www.pocketgamer.co.uk/image.asp?ids=7_14101_23720&img=artwork/na-jmbv/modern-combat-2-black-pegasus_5.jpg

The only reason those two guns look different is because of the angle their on. I loaded the game and went to the same spot in the game and it looks just the images show.

The reason the image of the gun thats firing looks better is because of the angle the gun is slightly different than when it’s not firing.

Anyone who’s knows anything about game graphics will know that the closer an image is to facing you directly the cleaner it will look. It’s why Anisotropic Filtering is so popular in games as it improves the quality of am image when viewed from a angle.

There is no story here. Stop making up crap to support your anti Gameloft agenda.

    • http://lettersfromdave.wordpress.com daveloft

Also the texture of the gun looks the works near the bottom of the screen. Because the gun is firing its pushing the gun back and the bottom where the texture looks the worse is off the screen.

      • http://lettersfromdave.wordpress.com daveloft

Nothing more pathetic than an angry mob down ranking the truth.

You keep on stating it runs best on Galaxy…did you ever try it on Desire HD?
Ill state: Runs BEST on Desire HD, so does allmost all Android games.

    • http://Website Mike

Although the Desire hd phones, such as the G2, are newer and they have Froyo, the Galaxy S phones are currently the best phones when it comes to first person shooting games, because they have a Gyroscope sensor.

Later this year, almost every new high-end Android phone will have gyroscope, but currently only the Galaxy S phones and the iPhone 4 have gyroscope.

The gyroscope makes a huge difference, because then you’re able to aim your weapon twice as fast.

I don’t think Google added gyroscope support with Android 2.3, but they forsure will add it with Android 2.4, which will greatly increase the number of phones with gyroscope. With the Galaxy S, Samsung had to add gyroscope support themselves.

      • http://lettersfromdave.wordpress.com daveloft

It doesn’t have a Gyroscope it has a 6 axis accelerometer while the most phone just have a 3 axis accelerometer.

        • http://Website Eric F

Adding a accelerometer with a gyroscope adds a total of six axis motion sensing.

          • http://lettersfromdave.wordpress.com daveloft

A 6-axis accelerometer does not measure linear acceleration in six dimensions, that would be very hard. Instead the three “extra” accelerometers gives the angular acceleration which in the end means that you can measure acceleration in the 6 degrees of freedom a normal phone haves. I think the name 6-axis accelerometer is very confusing.

A gyroscope measures the angular SPEED, not acceleration, so combining a 3-axis gyroscope with a 3-axis accelerometer is not the same as a 6-axis accelerometer. However, the difference should be quite small for the end user.

            @Daveloft

          • http://lettersfromdave.wordpress.com daveloft

Yeah I thought that post explained the difference fairly well. Thanks for posting the link.

      • http://Website Eric F

Google did add gyroscope support in Android 2.3 Gingerbread.

        • http://Website Eric F

Ugh, replied to wrong person – oh well.

    • http://lettersfromdave.wordpress.com daveloft

It runs great on both, enough with the best on my phone bullshit.

      • http://Website Eric F

It runs best on Galaxy S phones because it has a faster graphics processing unit than any other phone currently available on the market, although that is soon to change once the dual-core powerhouses come out.

      • http://Website Mike

You clearly haven’t used the gyroscope, because if you had, you would know why it’s so much better.

After playing this game on my iPod touch 4th gen with gyroscope, I can’t enjoy playing any FPS game on my iPod without gyroscope, as gyroscope makes that big of a difference.

Ask yourself: Can you aim your gun in Modern Combat 2 very accurately without using your hands??? I can, so stop claiming that all phones are equal.

        • http://lettersfromdave.wordpress.com daveloft

I have a Galaxy S and have used an iPhone 4. The motion control on the iPhone is far better than the Galaxy S which is why I questioned if the Galaxy S had a Gyroscope. But maybe that really just comes down to OS and software support.

Downloaded Modern Comabt and Shrek Kart and I keep getting a error message. I’m using the Nexus S. Any suggetions? My Wi-fi signal is strong.

    • http://lettersfromdave.wordpress.com daveloft

If you try to buy Modern Combat 2 for the Nexus S it says its not available, not sure if that has anything to do with it.

I would sugguest removing the game folder on your sd card card inside Gameloft. Then try downloading again and see if that helps.

  • http://Website jcastro

I think the comments about Gameloft being greedy are hilarious. SpottedNigel hit the nail on the head – Gameloft is simply trying to maximize profits. Just admit that their strategy is understandable – justified even – given the fact that the Market has proven far less profitable when compared with Apple’s App Store. (Download a friggin’ paid-app every once in a while Android users!)

I think the real motivation behind Gameloft’s haters is a frustration with one of Android’s biggest downsides: a serious lack of quality games. You could honestly count every notable title on one hand, and what’s worse is that they’re all older, IOS ports. What a waste of so much good hardware nowadays.

The bottom line is that Gameloft makes the best Android games, period. I myself have purchased every last game available for my handset, and there’s no way around the fact that without them, my Galaxy S would be like a Ferrari that never got driven above 30mph. If you’re blessed enough to own a high-end Android phone, don’t find reasons to complain, just buy one of their games and enjoy a glimpse into the life of an iphone4 owner.

  • http://Website idan

Well the reason I’m not vying it is despite the arguments that galaxy s series has gyroscope like capability gameloft chose not to utilise it. Shame. Even on the video with nexus s Guy still rotates camera by hand.

Fail. Game sure looks great but. I tell you I’m stealing my daughters iPod to play this.

  • http://Website Northern.dj

This only works on the Galaxy s on 2.1 but not on froyo 2.2.1

  • http://www.isafclan.wordpress.com ISAF_DASRIGHT

For the last time, the Samsung Galaxy S line-up does not include a gyroscope. Gyroscopes are found on iPod 4g’s and iPhone 4′s. I had a iPod 2g and a iPod 4g. The 2g does not include a gyroscope, it only includes an accelerometer. The difference between the 4g and 2g is very noticeable, especially the increased and far more accurate sensitivity. I have a Canadian Samsung Galaxy S Captivate on Rogers. The combined accelerometer and gyroscope combination is superior than just accelerometer by itself.
