This week Samsung finally announced the availability of the long-awaited WiFi-only Galaxy Tab. Best Buy accidentally advertised a WiFi-only version of the Tab last year for $499, but then fessed up that it was a mistake and the release date had been pushed back.
Spec-wise, this is the exact same hardware as the original Tab, minus the 3G connectivity. The WiFi-only Tab will still run Android 2.2 and it should eventually be upgraded to 2.3, but there is no telling how long that will take given Samsung’s track record with software updates.
No exact launch date or pricing was revealed, but that info should be coming soon. I expect we will see the WiFi-only Tab priced around $499, like was originally reported, or hopefully cheaper.
Samsung also announced they expanded the content for their Media Hub with acclaimed films and TV shows. As part of a new agreement with CBS, Media Hub users will be able to purchase single episodes or full seasons of several of its hit drama and reality programs including next day TV programming like “CSI: Crime Scene Investigation,” “NCIS,” “The Good Wife” and “Survivor.”

Motorola’s Xoom tablet with Honeycomb will also be coming in the first quarter, but we do not have exact pricing on that either. Clearly the Xoom is the more desirable tablet now (with its dual-core CPU and Android 3.0), so it will be tough to recommend the Galaxy Tab unless Samsung prices it extremely competitively.
What price point do you think Samsung should aim for with its WiFi-only Tab?
