Official: Froyo update for the AT&T Samsung Captivate will be released tomorrow

Hoping to stave off any additional backlash from the delayed Samsung Captivate update, AT&T has announced that the Froyo update for the handset will be made available tomorrow. The announcement came from AT&T’s Facebook page which indicates that the Samsung Captivate Froyo update may need to be installed manually rather than being pushed out over the air. We’ll have to wait until tomorrow for more instructions from Samsung on how to install the update.

With the Android 2.2 update for the Samsung Captivate scheduled for tomorrow, the only Galaxy S handset left to be updated will be Verizon’s Samsung Fascinate. Anyone care to bet on when Verizon decides to roll out their Android 2.2 update?

  Facebook may not be the best place to post a new product announcement, but if you have a lot of customers following your Facebook page, why not share an update announcement directly with them? It’s actually a much better solution than simply posting a tweet.

Honestly, who is still waiting for this? Either you realized it would never get updated and you Flashed Cognition or Perception and are happy without all the bloatware and lag -OR- you got rid of this POS a long time ago.

I’m in the first camp… This was my first Samsung smartphone and definitely my last! Should have listened to all those blogs and forums that warned about Samsung not updating their phones. See ya Samsung…have fun riding the fail!

  Its my company phone and I broke the company rules and put cog on then tried perception. Not supposed to root or mod company property, but I was sick to death of this POS phone.

  Samsung got lucky that their Behold II debacle was completely overshadowed by the hype everyone made for the Galaxy S phones. I knew after seeing what a disaster they made of that, not to trust them to release any updates to these phones in a timely manner. Samsung doesn’t seem to like updating their phones unless something is actually wrong with it.

  Oh how much I agree with the same frustrating BS about these constant disappointing promises of the “soon to come” upgrades. I bought the captivate July 201 with the expectation this upgrade would come within a month. Month after month nothing! Trying to follow this global upgrade that was slowly creeping across continents was getting insane.Thanks for nothing samsung. The soul purpose of choosing this phone was with all intentions of receiving a phone with these capabilities. Only a disappointment.
  Plus just to register this model on Samsungs site was impossible often it wasn’t listed as one of their models.

At least we’re not the slowest horse to finish the race so the question remains….now what? We go on to bitch about not having 2.3 or even 2.4 when that comes out? It is what it is…we got eff’ed with our phone choice…our bad…our mistake…so hopefully we all learned our lesson and won’t ever touch a Samsung phone again. Am I grateful? Sure why not…did the leaked update mess with things…probably. But WOW Samsung and AT&T pulled through for a one two combo of suck.

I will never buy another samsung phone. I left my iphone 3G for this. Delay after delay, gps issues, samsung AND at&t ignoring the user base.

Next phone will be an Iphone5.

Wow man verizon fascinate the last one of the galaxy s phones to get android 2.2… God I hate verizon so much, they went from the best customer service in the u.s to the worst. Never again will I buy samsung phone though verizon EVER!!!

  You cant arbitrarily slam verizon. They’ve been really good about putting out updates for all of their other android phones. You also have to realize that the Fascinate was the last of the SGS phones to be released. Think about AT&T owners who got theirs back in June.
  
  Point blank this is a Samsung issue. Always has been, always will be. The SGS is flat out a piece of sh*t phone. Random reboots, GPS is bunk, stupid slow proprietary file system, terrible battery life, and piss poor slow software updates. All of this is typical of Samsung. They rush out the “next best” hardware, then realize its buggy, then they say “we’re working on it”, but never put out firmware updates. I’ve experienced this with their tv’s and blu-ray players in the past. Samsung is only concerned with their next hardware release, not customer support for their past hardware releases. The sooner people realize this and stop buying this garbage the sooner Samsung will change their business model.

    Derek yes the the Galaxy S phones have their faults but in all honesty. They are pretty good phones. Ok yes the GPS isn’t perfect but what one is and that is one downside to the SGS. Granted my Blackberry was better but after flashing a some different ROMS the GPS on my Cappy is pretty good. Sure Samsung is slow on updates but you gotta give them props for being pretty hacker friendly. Ive been running Froyo for quite a while now. Last thing what smartphone has excellent battery life? would i like the battery to last longer on my phone? sure but in all honesty i can usually manage over 24hrs. Overall im happy with my captivate is it perfect? No but what phone is?

      I admit the Hummingbird CPU seems powerful and the S-Amoled screen looks pretty damn good. Probably the second best mobile screen behind the iphone retina display. But I get such crappy battery life its not funny. I charge it every night and by the time I get back home at 7pm I’m down to 20%, and thats with it sitting idly on my desk for the entire day. If I have to make a few calls on it, I can only make it to 5pm. The battery life is terrible on it. The S-AMOLED screen is a battery hog. The new S-LCD screens are much better on battery life.

Hm, Verizon is last to officially update their Fascinate. It doesn’t really surprise me. They’re more focused on their Droid line than they are on non-Droid phones. It took the Ally quite a while to get upgraded to 2.2. At least I’m rocking the (Non)official 2.2 EB01. I don’t blame Samsung for this. I still blame the carriers. Who else can you blame when three out of four carriers have finally updated their Galaxy S phones?

    I say use odin because, at the time of the Vibrant 2.2 update Tmo and samsung released it via mini kies. So like they told me i used mini kies, only to have my phone first get stuck in recovery only to end up soft bricked. I had followed the instructions verbatim. So I call samsung (this all happened on a Saturday) only to have a machine tell me buisness hours are during weekdays. I tried the live chat from their website but could not get a rep for about 5 hours. Finally I am speaking with a rep via live chat only for him to tell me to call a 24/7 care number. So I do (still saturday!) and when talking to the rep he tells me that my problem requires a level 3 tech and they wont be in until monday. ARRRRGG
    Im looking on Tmo support forum, and someone from XDA had posted a thread to use odin instead of kies. In fact the thread also said that Samsungs own techs and devs use odin. So I follow the link to download odin, 2.2 file then follow 3 step instructions and 5 mins later FROYO!

  Well, I updated it and then when it was supposed to reboot nicely, it did not. It started the boot animation from AT&T and then went BLACK!
  
  - the phone was rooted and I had the Voodoo-Project LagFix on it, I don know if this have something with it.
  - my phone is one of those that have GPS problems and even with the GPS Fix, it did not fix
  - this phone is one of those that you can’t Hard RESET or put in Download Mode by just pressing the buttons. I know that I have to use the ADB Recovery Mode, I used that to install the LagFix, but it’s not working right now, I’m not able to put it in Recovery Mode or Download Mode.
  
  Can someone help me? I needed to get this to Recovery Mode or Download Mode so I could try to flash it with Odin.

    Yes, you should have removed voodoo lagfix first.
    
    Check XDA if there is a solution, but without getting into download mode, I can’t see a way.

    ouch, but you should have read the disclaimer before updating. It tells you to back up all media files and to get rid of lagfixes and to un root it. I didn’t root mine and the update went off without a hitch. got the GPS working and it actually runs faster

      Yeah, I know, I was careless – and dumb. I was told about a Jig that is sold on eBay that force the Captivate to Download Mode, hopefully I can get my Captivate flashed and working.

  my problem has been that everything wen wonderful. but I when to cancel because it was frozen. I canceled the Kies and it went to emergency. I disconnected my phone from the computer, then I tried to turn my phone on but it went right to a phone with a triangle and a exclamation with a PC????? It says its in emergency mode…. I deleted everything and re installed it again.. But my phone will not to a thing..I’ve taken the battery out, then put it in pushing the volume button down and turn on the start button… But not a thing, PLEASE HELP!! HELP I HAVE NO PHONE… Tell me how do deleted or continue….It would be appreciated so much, I really need help….

Historically, if Samsung is pushing an update it means your phone is at or reaching the end of it’s product life. Enjoy your first and most likely last update.

Hey everyone!

For those of you who updated their captivate to froyo, I had a question.

I was fiddling around with the phone’s camera settings and I came upon a firmware update in the menu.

Does anybody know what this is about? Is it upgrading our camera settings or what?

I was trying to update my captivate to the froyo. But then it froze as a stand by.. on the screen of my phone it has a phone next to it is yellow triangle and then the PC. I even have taken out the batterie, put back in and followed directions from there… Now I can’t turn on or off my phone, not sure what I can do… Please help me out.. I even deleted all the downloads and re downloaded them… But not able to figure out what I can do,,
I can’t use my phone at all.. can anyone help me out
