Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos was just listed as an inventor on a new patent application that describes a “method for protecting a portable device that includes an airbag deployable from a side of the portable device.” Genius, right?

“Prior to impact between a surface and a device, a determination of a risk of damage to the device is made. If the risk of damage to the device exceeds a threshold, a protection system is activated to reduce or substantially eliminate damage to the device.”

The patent was originally submitted in 2010, so there’s no telling when we might actually see this tech come to light. As someone who has dropped plenty of phones, I hope they pull it off.
