Amazon CEO files patent for mobile device airbags

Amazon airbag

Oh no! Not another patent story. I think you will like this one.

Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos was just listed as an inventor on a new patent application that describes a “method for protecting a portable device that includes an airbag deployable from a side of the portable device.” Genius, right?

“Prior to impact between a surface and a device, a determination of a risk of damage to the device is made. If the risk of damage to the device exceeds a threshold, a protection system is activated to reduce or substantially eliminate damage to the device.”

The patent was originally submitted in 2010, so there’s no telling when we might actually see this tech come to light. As someone who has dropped plenty of phones, I hope they pull it off.

Right, and it’ll cost $500 to put a new airbag, inflator, and control unit into the phone after it deploys. Well, as long as the phone doesn’t blow itself up in the process.

Wow.. LMAO! Awesome find Taylor !

    Wth?…lol

I do like to toss and catch my phone sometimes, like when I’m sitting on my bed or something, so it’s safe, but wouldn’t the air bags deploy for that?

    I’m getting tired of patents.
& this one is just stupid. -__-

Whoa.. LMAO.. Jeff… Dude.. Lay off the little glass pipe… I really wished the US patent system required a working prototype as that would be good for more laughs. I can see the pitch… “and now with less room for your battery!” ;P

Lame and will more than likely add unnecessary bulkiness to devices. If I want to break my phone I guess I will no longer be able to throw it since those airbags would deploy. Damn! Well time for the hammer

If it’s like a car airbag then it’s a one-time-only “device” and you’re going to get a bunch of white powder all over the place. It might break your nose too.

well to make sure that the phone dropped on the front or back, they would have to make the front and rear plate from butter or buttered toast.

Every phone I’ve ever dropped never hit flat on the front or back, always on a side or corner.

The upper-right picture shows what looks like bursts of smoke emanating from the holes on the bottom. It makes me think that while an airbag is cool, it would be cooler to have little jets that suspend the device in the air and guide it back to wherever it was dropped from. I should patent that…

“Hey toss me my phone!…. WAIT! WAIT!”
    *poof*
    “Grr… now I gotta replace the airbag…”

Pretty cool idea, i hope it actually releases!
