HTC goes on the offensive, sues Apple for infringing on three more patents

htc_patent

HTC is going on the offensive again, suing Apple for infringement of three separate patents. Details about the lawsuit and the patents in question are still unknown, but the complaint is directed at Apple’s Macintosh Computers, iPods, iPhones, iPads and other Apple devices. HTC filed the complaint against Apple in the U.S. District Court in Delaware and is asking the court to block Apple’s importation and sale of infringing products in the United States. The court documents reveal that HTC gained possession of the patents in 2008 and 2010.

HTC and Apple have been trading blows for quite some time. While it’s nice to see HTC standing up for itself, we hope the patents in question are strong enough to cause some serious damage. With nearly a half dozen patent infringement cases between the two companies, it’s getting hard to keep track of all moving pieces. We know all these legal disputes need their day in court, but we wish HTC and other manufacturers could one day scratch all their legal fees off the books and divert all that extra cash over to R&D.

Do you think that the legal battles between HTC and other manufacturers will die down once Google’s acquisition of Motorola Mobility and its patent portfolio is complete?

I would like to think that it would stop but but will only slow down. I want Android to be #1 and stay ahead of the game. I hope that the other OS companies see their wrong doing and can focus their attention on developing their outdated and over advertised OS

Glad to see HTC swinging back. Like you said Nick, I hope it is enough to actually hurt.. Time will tell if things will get better once the google/moto thing is final. I hope it does because we as consumers do not need these guys using all there resources on legal battles instead of innovation

I know it probably will never happen, but I with once of these patent lawsuits would actually result in an import ban of Apple’s products in the U.S. (at least for a few weeks). Apple needs a taste of their own medicine and it looks like HTC’s the only one willing to go toe to toe with them.

i always thought HTC’s patent portfolio should be quite strong as they were making winmo pda’s long before anyone else. good luck to them

It’s about time an Android manufacturer has decided to go on the offensive. Hopefully the patents HTC has brought up are enough to deal a blow to Apple.

    I’m torn.

I really am glad to see HTC standing up to Apple and putting Apple on the defensive for once.

At the same time, I’m growing weary of reading news of these ridiculous patent claims going back and forth ad nauseum. It’s unrealistic, I know, but I would really prefer to see a company devote their money into making really solid products rather than throwing it all into the legal system.

I’m all for defending your true intellectual property and for going after those who might be infringing upon it… but are any of these companies *honestly* setting out to copy another company’s work, or do they just all happen to build similar products? Truthfully, I think it’s the latter. I know that the frivolous patent suits are just a fact of life at this point, but I really wish that it wasn’t.

Anyhoo, sorry for the downer. Best of luck to HTC on this; I’d love to see them cripple Apple.

i completley agree. the money would be better spent on R&D but it will be like this for a while.

and i think eventually you all just reach a point where everything looks the same. you dont see washiing machine people fighting over wshing machine design do you?

Htc has already beat Apple in the area of innovation a long time ago. In my world…WHAT’S GOOD FOR THE GOOSE IS GOOD FOR THE GANDER….Apple started this BULLSPIT…and HTC will end it…With Google purchasing motorola I’m pretty sure if they all sit down and take a real good look at all those patents they can find many more things that they can SUE APPLE FOR…Honestly….F…apple all day long….

One by one, the Android manufactures don’t have so much power or as much power as Apple or Microsoft. But if they get together – even more with Google – they can be much more of a force and stop this patent trolling.
