Softbank Japan has Ice Cream Sandwich, knows how to treat a lady

Today, Japanese carrier Softbank introduced 9 new Android phones, one of them an Ice Cream Sandwich device. While most of these will probably not make it to many places outside of Japan, we thought you guys would be interested in seeing what some of these devices feature.

ICS is one of the hottest topics in the Android community right now, and it’s always interesting to see how different devices can be in other markets. Some of these smartphones are pretty interesting (and by that, I mean eccentric), and others have an inner beast. Let’s take a look:

Sharp Aquos Phone 104SH

First things first. This device is officially announced to carry the next version of Android. Yes, the one we have all been waiting for, Ice Cream Sandwich. That’s not the only great thing about this device, though.

Sharp is not as well known as other Android manufacturers, but this device surely competes against the top players. The Aquos Phone comes with a 4.5-inch 1280 x 720p resolution display, a 1.5 GHz OMAP 4460 dual-core processor, a 12.1 MP camera and digital TV Tuner, e-wallet functionality. It’s also waterproof.

Not too shabby. We’re hoping other markets get similar–or better–specs in Ice Cream Sandwich devices. Maybe we’ll get another sneak peek of ICS on this phone? Make it happen, guys!

There’s also the Sharp Aquos Phone 101SH, 102SH and 103SH. The 102 SH’s internals are almost identical to Sharp’s ICS device, except this one comes with a 1 GHz OMAP 4430 dual-core processor. The 101SH and 103SH are not as high-end. They both come with Android 2.3 Gingerbread, are waterproof and sport an 8 MP camera.

The Sharp Aquos 101SH features a design unlike your typical Android smartphone. It slides up, much like some older feature phones, and discloses a classic number pad. Check it out on the right.

Panasonic LUMIX 101P

Camera junkies  and photography enthusiasts, this phone is for you. We’ve yet to see how well it performs, but this device comes with a 13.2 MP camera. It has the higher megapixels, but photographers can vouch that bigger numbers don’t always mean better images.

The LUMIX also comes with Android 2.3 Gingerbread, a 4-inch qHD display (960 x 540p) and IPX5/IPX7 ruggedness (waterproof). And it’s all packed into 9.8mm.

Dell Streak Pro 101DL

Dell is more known in the Android ecosystem than the aforementioned manufacturers, and their device is not lagging behind. Packed with a 1.5 GHz dual-core MSM8260 processor, Android 2.3 Gingerbread, a 4.3-inch AMOLED qHD display (960 x 540p), an 8 MP rear-facing camera and a 1.3 MP front-facing camera, this happens to be the only device on the list that is not waterproof.

Phones for Women don’t seem as controversial in Japan

The announcement/release of the HTC Rhyme, which is “directed at women,” saw a fair amount of controversy. While some people probably don’t care, many found it unnecessary and even offensive.

The debate rages on, but it seems things are quite different in Japan. Softbank has announced 2 devices “for women.” And let me tell you guys, they went all out on those designs.

Meet the Kyocera Honey Bee 101k (left) and the NEC MEDIAS CH 101N. As you can see, these devices are definitely designed with women in mind (though I can’t picture any woman I know actually carrying one of these). Here are the specs:

Kyocera Honey Bee 101K

  • Android 2.3 Gingerbread
  • 1.2 GHz MP5225 processor
  • 3.5-inch display (480×800p)
  • 5 MP camera
  • e-wallet
  • Digital TV tuner
  • Waterproof

  • Android 2.3 Gingerbread
  • 1.4 GHz MSM8255 Snapdragon processor
  • 4-inch OLED display (480 x 800p)
  • 8 MP camera
  • e-wallet
  • Digital TV tuner
  • Waterproof

Wrap Up

The most noticeable device is definitely the Sharp Aquos 104SH, since it’s coming with tasty Ice Cream Sandwich. Not to mention its specs, which aren’t bad either. We’ve yet to see what ICS devices will turn out to be like in the US (and other markets). Don’t fear, though, our time is coming soon. We’re expecting to see ICS in about a week at CTIA in San Diego, CA. Taylor and I will be there to report all the Android goodness to you guys. Stay tuned!

The other devices aren’t that bad, either. Did anyone else raise an eyebrow over the fact that 8 out of 9 devices are waterproof, though? It seems people are wetting their phones often over there! What about the phones for women? What do you guys think of them?

The Sharp sounds amazing. My biggest question is why don’t we have tv tuners in our phones?

    • DroidSamurai

First LG, then HTC, now Sharp. They will all be releasing phones with a 720p display, and none of them seems to use PenTile. Now, I will be very disappointed if the Prime only has a 720p PenTile display.

    • Richard Needham

There are no TV tuners in our phones for two reasons, 1: It’s cheaper to manufacture while still charging us top dollar for these devices. 2: It’s another way of charging us extra to stream TV content on our devices which most likely means you have to have a data subscription.

“T-DMB is made for transmissions on radio frequency bands band III (VHF) and L (UHF), for terrestrial. Because the United States and Canada still allocate the first band for television broadcasting (VHF channels 7 to 13) and the United States reserves the L band for military applications, DMB is still unavailable in North America.”

      • heeros

If my understanding is correct, that just means we can’t use the same frequencies.

I assume that it’s much easier to cover the entire country if it’s the size of japan compared to the US. I personally haven’t been too impressed with the over the air service here in the US at home, so it makes me question the service I’d get with a portable device that has almost no antenna to speak of (compared to stationary equipment).

  • James

So that confirms it then. They aren’t removing hardware buttons with ICS. I’m disappointed :(

    • Tony

Possible, but maybe that’s just for backwards compatibility for all the apps that still need a Menu button or something. I mean even those cheap tablet makers make Honeycomb tablets with buttons for no reason so who knows. I’m setting my expectations low so either way I’ll be happy come the 11th :)

That water comment was uncalled for.

    My bad wetting***

Hmm, if the picture of the Sharp Aquos Phone 104SH is accurate then it’s very interesting as a phone launching with ICS that it comes with 3 buttons at the bottom (home, menu, and back)! Hopefully Sharp will release a version of this in the US & Europe!

I also quite like the fact the Sharp Aquos 101SH has a old school keypad – I’m thinking it could smooth the transition for some people used to those kind of keypads (I’m thinking like my mum here!) from a dumbphone to a smartphone! Let’s face it, there are hundreds of Android phones coming out with very little variation in form-factor, so variety is a good thing imho!

  • Mark

They will mostly be crap phones considering the crap hardware that the Japanese are known for. Just look at Binatone and Nintendo.

    • Jess Blanchard

Just blow in the phone and it will work fine!

  • teecruz

Boy, the one thing I hate the East for: their awesome devices!

    • teecruz

I mean sure, they look ugly.
      but wow. those specs.
we BETTER get more impressive specs than that! :D

  • Felicia D

Im purchasing the new iPhone 5 instead. Android phones are bricks.

    • steven smith

Alright then troll. Why are you on an android site?

    • Tariq

Why is it most girls just don’t understand what good smartphones are all about. Maybe its because they just don’t have a clue and probably don’t care about the hardware or the amazing new software . To them ice cream sandwich is probably exactly that, not something you want to get inside your phone. So I suppose the iPhone is something the simple minded can understand.

    • Tariq

For your information things have moved on, iPhone is old news what’s in is Android that’s what’s happing now and the foreseeable future, so get with the times , don’t be sheep

  • monk

The tsunami changed the trends over there. All phones are waterproof now. I hope we can get similar high end devices here

    • pearl harbor bomba

they should be made of lead/plumb to be radiation proof for the next fuk-u-shima disaster.

    • Nagoya blue

      Are you dumb or insensitive?

The tsunami has no connection to water-proof phones.

  • mexican001

I hate how the japanese keep the best things just for them, happens with many games, and now happens with android devices, that’s BS.

The First sharp sounds great, It’s starting to look like Nexus Prime won’t be as revolutionary as Nexus 1 was

wow great spec on that sharp.. ive never owned one.. wonder how it will work out

  • Nich

my girlfriend just got a look at the Honey Bee 101k and she is SOOOO excited . “It’s pink , it’s pretty and looks just like an iPhone ! ”

i could barely explain to her that it was not an iphone and was only being sold in Japan .

she then interrupted me “Does it come with a matching bracelet !?”

i have no clue what she is talking about anymore as she has run off to call a friend about the new phone she is gonna get .

  • DroidSmith

The lady phones are clearly a hoax, or they would have come with e-purse instead. Waterproof, now that’s funny.

  • SliestDragon

That Panasonic LUMIX 101P looks really interesting. If the camera is as good as it sounds, it may actually be a competitor. And or course, it goes without saying that the phone by Sharp is insane! Holy crap that thing looks awesome. :O

  • Caryll

    Nice phone!
