Motorola and Verizon event coming October 18; Droid RAZR (HD) incoming

spyderlaunchinvite

This may not be the announcement many of us were waiting for, but Motorola and Verizon have decided to step into the breach with an event of their own.

Next Tuesday in New York, they will be taking the wraps off some new hardware that, as you can see from the invitation, will be “Faster. Thinner. Smarter. Stronger.” (Great, now I’ve got Kanye and Daft Punk stuck in my head.)

Fortunately for us, Motorola and Verizon apparently didn’t feel like being too tricky and left the name of the invite as “spyderlaunchinvite.jpg.” As you will no doubt remember, this was yet another code name for the Droid RAZR (Droid HD).

Specs for this phone leaked late last month and, if accurate, will certainly position it as the top dog on Verizon, for now anyway.

Droid RAZR (Droid HD)

  • 4.3-inch 960 x 540 qHD Super AMOLED display
  • Unspecified dual-core 1.2 GHz processor
  • 8 megapixel camera with 1080p video recording and image stabilization
  • “HD” front-facing camera
  • 1 GB RAM
  • Gorilla Glass and Kevlar casing with splash-guard coating
  • Webtop support and Lapdock accessories
  • 4G LTE

We didn’t get the thickness, but if you take a look at the images from our post in August that featured the Droid RAZR side-by-side with the Bionic, you’ll see that it is much more compact. The Droid RAZR is certainly a bit of a puzzling addition to the lineup so soon after the launch of the Droid Bionic, but we all know the Bionic was launched several months after intended.

If you enjoy a bit of flashy advertising that doesn’t show you anything about the product, then Motorola made the teaser below especially for you.

Any Motorola fans out there excited for this new addition to the Droid family and not particularly worried about what Samsung and Google have in store?

I feel this mocks the Prime announcement. A week later.

So not that I would buy from moto over sammy, but Samsung and Google have effectively until the 18th to announce the Prime. Why? Because Google owns Motorola and they will stop mourning on the 18th.

I was all in for the Bionic, but now I am happy to wait a a little more to take a look at the Razr. I think the Bionic release was just too late.

Ummm HD front facing cam? Doubtful

Hence the quotes around it. All HDs just like all 4Gs are not created equal.

Where is the next HTC phone?? I thought the Droid HD/Incredible HD/etc. was supposed to be HTC.

    • http://www.technogasms.com Sean Riley

The next HTC on Verizon is the HTC Vigor which as you note has been referred to as the Incredible HD. It has shown up in Cellebrite and an internal doc that pointed to an October 13 launch.

Awesome, thanks! I’m torn cause I want the Nexus, but I’m not a Samsung fan usually. I love HTC phones. But I have a feeling that I’ll regret not getting the Nexus based soley on the fact that its a Samsung phone…

The HTC Rezound (aka HTC Vigor) should be announced any day now.

Wait, what’s the HD part of this phone? The screen is the same resolution as the Droid Bionic! O_o

This might be my next phone, the prime is too big for my taste, and I don’t see any 4″ phones coming in the near future..

Can any of the AndroidAndMe writers please chime in on whether they’ve heard anything about the future of 4″ handsets?

    Thanks!

I can’t wait to see the raze. Might be my next phone.

Geez, how many more phones can Verizon release? The bionic was just released weeks ago. This is actually hurting the consumers when it comes to updates. It seems like the status quo is that the newest phones get priority. Carriers just need to slow down on phone releases. If they just focused on 3 main superphones each yr that would be better and help.leviat

Excellent point! This should be sent as an email should be sent to all android manufacturers!

I’m sort of in agreement. I love having a fast/awesome/best phone, but it was easy in the beginning to keep track of the 2 or 3 Android phones each carrier had. I could tell which was best, etc. top, mid and low tier. But now with new phones coming out every other week it’s getting ridiculous. But on that note, the Droid RAZR does seem quite interesting.

According to that over active hemroid dick yarrell vzw has 0 phones..

HAHA I get why they put the number 42 in the commercial ( Its the “answer to life the universe and everything” according to Google)

Yep, a reference to the Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy. I should have given them some kudos for that.

Why even bother with a Motorola branded phone now? Google hasn’t even started giving them the inside track to the next innovations until next year.

  • Nathan

Well this will be interesting to read/see about hopefully a certain event will be reschedule soon aswell :D

There is 1 thing, and ONLY 1 thing that would make me even consider the DROID RAZR being compared to the Nexus Prime; a 720×1280 resolution, a better battery life, and under 8.5 cm thick (that is if apple hasn’t patented “thinnest smartphone in the iWorld!”.
