Ice Cream Sandwich already ported to Samsung Galaxy S II and LG Optimus 3D among others

The days when hackers and developers beat manufacturers to the punch with software updates are back again. Earlier this week, the source code for Ice Cream Sandwich was released, starting the countdown to custom ROMs on devices everywhere. It’s only been four days since that release, and there are some popular phones already being treated to their first helping of Android 4.0′s cold, creamy goodness.

The Samsung Galaxy S II, currently one of the most popular smartphones in existence, is one of first devices to receive an almost fully functioning AOSP Ice Cream Sandwich port. WiFi and Bluetooth still haven’t been figured out on the Galaxy S II, but fixes should be along very shortly. My guess is that before the end of the year, Galaxy S II owners will have several different Ice Cream Sandwich based ROMs to choose from.

Along with the GSII, the LG Optimus 3D has also been treated with an ICS port. Not much is known on the status of the Optimus 3D ROM, but judging by the performance in the video below, things are well on their way to being fully functional.

Of course the Galaxy S II and Optimus 3D are just two devices out of many that have semi-functioning Android 4.0 ports already. If you’re into hacking and modding, and your device already has an ICS ROM to call its own, be sure to share it in the comments below.

A screen at 1280×720 should be nice ^^.

And suddenly I don’t feel that bad about getting my galaxy s2 which I am loving btw the way, finally got to divorce my wife of 3 years (G1…thanks for the good times)…I won’t root until there’s a stable build.

    No touchpad port yet
    Fuck you
cm9 will treat me better anyway!!!!

    • Andrew

I think WebOS is nice too, and $99 is cheap to enjoy something different.

Sensation has a very early alpha on XDA. A little too alpha for me, but I am sure there are braver than me out there.

Have had the S II for about a month and have been loving it so far so there’s no rush into getting ICS at the moment. I’m totally fine in waiting a couple of months until all the bugs and kinks are out.

  • Wayne

Question. Would the Galaxy S 2 port work on the Droid charge?

  • Monochrome

ICS options are good. Especially if I have to wait any longer on the GNexus to come out!!!

  • Nate B.

Google needs to push it out to the Nexus S/4G already. Everyone screwed up with this thing. Forget getting the GN out before you update the Nexus S/4G, send that update out now. Already late as hell. I wonder what the Nexus 4 will be like.

    • J-Man

Much like with the Gingerbread update with regards to the Nexus One, I’m sure all the Nexus S owners have to wait for a while before Google allows you to have the ICS goodness. Gotta give the Galaxy Nexus some sort of edge, eh?

  • Legend

HTC Desire ICS ROM if anyone is interested :) Very early alpha stages..

  • Mike

great to hear about that. Its a shame my Samsung galaxy 3 gt-i5800 does not have any book custom poor. Just a standard upgrade to android 2.2 it is a great phone that has not reached much potential in the way of custom rom canyon-mod would work great.

  • Mike

Great to hear about that. Its a shame my galaxy 3 gt-i5800 only has a standard android 2.2 update. There is some good potential going to waste. Canyon-mod would be great on this.

  • BigCiX

I might just keep my Thrill if the port comes out soon.

  • yobif

Waiting for new Google Galaxy Nexus :) Pure Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich.. Ready to taste..

  • MG13

When will ics be released for non-rooted gs2 owners?

  • KatSelezneva

I wonder if ICS’ll run on Samsung Galaxy SI. Android 4.0. has already offered a lot of tasty things for Android developers A dessert for developers: Some Ice Cream Sandwich, please!
And I do hope it won’t disappoint them and Galaxy Nexus won’t be the only one device running on ICS without bugs.

ohhh. cant wait for it to run on other phones.

  • MM189

Just for some clarification. Would this port be able to work on all iterations of Samsung Galaxy SII (ie the Epic 4G Touch on Sprint) or would it just work on the original on T-Mobile?

  • Kapil

Android 4.0 is available for Galaxy S too — and works even better. Other than GPS, Camera and Bluetooth, everything is working.

    Galaxy S FTW!!

I enjoy going back and finding older posts. Galaxy S iii and Tab 2 Tablets are here or on the way now. Android developers and hobbyists were porting Ice Cream 6 month prior.
I just get a kick out of these things
