Rumor: Samsung working on 11-inch tablet with ultra high-res display, 2GHz Exynos

samsung-exynos-5250

Despite multiple lawsuits and the odds against it, the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 has been one of the most (if not the most) popular Android tablets to date. But as with every device Samsung releases, there’s always a bigger and badder sequel right around the corner. And the follow up to the Tab 10.1 sounds amazing.

Jonathan Geller of BGR has it on good word from a “trusted source” that Samsung has an 11.6-inch tablet in the works for Mobile World Congress 2012. According to the tipster, despite the tablets increased display size, the overall size won’t be much different thanks to a smaller bezel. And speaking of the display, it looks like Samsung is going to beat Apple to market when it comes to tablet sized Retina resolutions. The 11.6-inch display on the Sammy’s new Tab is rumored to land at around 2560 x 1600, giving it a 16:10 screen ratio.

That stunning display will be matched up with Android 4.0, NFC Beam that will play nice with the Galaxy Nexus, an HDTV dock for big screen gaming and a dual-core Cortex A15 Exynos 5250 CPU clocked at 2GHz. Which coincidentally just so happens to share a lot with Apple’s upcoming A6.

The display, Beam and dock all make sense, but the timing for the processor is just a bit off. About a week ago, Samsung revealed that the Exynos 5250 wouldn’t be ready for production until Q2 2012, with tablets coming to market by the second half of the year. Since MWC is in February, well, you can see where the discrepancies come in.

Whenever Samsung’s Galaxy Tab 11.6 (please don’t actually use that name Samsung) launches, it’s sure to be a huge success.

this should be price good or competitively or it not going to sell well

Keep touchwiz off of it and it will be an epic beast !

      • Deeds

I agree. I hate when manufacturers put their skins on top, especially if it is going to be ICS

      • WarDrake

not gonna happen, Samsung’s hardware is amazing, but they like sticking their rappy software in it…

      • latouffe

Im the only one who liked TW 4.0?
The only thing i could see in that news was : “The price of Galaxy tab 10.1 will DROP!” :)

      • mrjlwilliams

Touch is their trademark, so why would they leave it off? It is doing just fine on their devices right now.

      • raminscc

At least we have the option to mod our phones and use excellent launcher replacements such as LauncherPRO, GO, and ADW :-).
        Love you android!

i don’t really care if TW is there. Once rooted TW is easily removed without affecting it unlike Sense.

Can’t wait for Samsung to patent a SUPER Retina display =p

      As always, suck..on..that, apple.

      • Alex

Haha they should file a patent on “a tablet display that is clear and made of glass” and then sue Apple to block all sales of the iPhone everywhere

      • Alex

So.. many… pixels.. you can run four 720p videos at the same time, and still have a bit of room for other stuff

The iPad 3 has been rumored to have a high resolutions display for a while now. I also wouldn’t be surprised if the iPad 3 is sold before this tablet.

        • http://sean-the-electrofreak.blogspot.com/ Sean the Electrofreak

That’s what I’m worried about… Android manufacturers seem always to drop the new competitive hardware a week or two after the new Apple product, after all the sheep have gone out and bought an iDevice.

It would be nice to see an awesome Android tablet hit the market a week before an iPad release, to give Apple fanbois something to worry about.

      • Lucian Armasu

I’ve been waiting for that screen size for a while, but I think it would make much more sense with an integrated keyboard like the Transformer Prime. So I hope either Samsung or the next Asus Transformer 3 will be like that.

      same here.
The Transformer is the right setup but at 10.1 the keyboard is a little too cramped, 11.6 would be very good I think.

  • rutgers2k

    so 2013?

  • AndroidCowboy

Anytime someone can beat Apple to the market is nice. But it does need to be priced well in order to sell. I have the Galaxy Tab 10.1 and I’m mostly happy but looking for a ICS Tablet that is smoother and faster.

    *THIS* is my next tablet.

On the other hand, any chance of Samsung going back to Tegra if they can’t get the volumes up for a MWC launch? Or could this just be a paper launch with delivery in May or so?

These numbers are going crazy!! A full HD screen is awesome but this is just nuts crazy awesome :D Powerhouse in a tablet.

  • breinhar

I think manufactures are still trying to figure out a good strategy for the tablet market. I think the average tablet buyer won’t see a difference between a 1.5. Ghz this and a 2.0ghz that. They see the sticker and if the fire and the deeply discounted hp touchpad have shown anything its that lower prices sell like hot cakes.

Yes!! The only thing slightly holding me off the Prime is that I was hoping for a higher res screen. And keeping it roughly the same size by only decreasing the bezel = WIN!!

  • RRR

We discussed this before — most probably this screen will be with usual Samsung’s “catch” — the 2-subpixel per pixel pentile matrix making resolution very inhomogeneous for different parts of the spectrum. Worst is that essentially this screen will deliver the same 720p with its “dirty carpet” effect for red, orange, magenta and white solid colors and not perfectly looking jump-scaled small fonts

In average of course this will be an improvement. Roughly the resolution will be higher then 1280×800 but lower then claimed 2560 x 1600..It will be comparable to Apple future hi-res screens which i expect will be 2x for all R, G and B (or 2024 x 1536 )

Currents 720p screen resolutions as a trade-off with processor power & heat dissipation and battery life are probably OK for gamers. But for browsers, texters, photo professionals ideally at current level of tech all larger size 10-14″ tablets have to be at so called 4k which is around 4000 x 2500. And finally the ultimate ideal spot for PPI for them is not even “retina display” PPI=300 but more then 450-500. Do the math yourselves because i will exceed anyone’s trust if i will say that this will be 15-20 megapixel screens. So Samsung and others still has a long way to perfection from current sub 1 Mpixels

  • jk0l

The Galaxy Tab 7.7 is not even released yet? (that I know of)
Anyway, can’t wait to see this in action

  • Marc’us H.

Samsung historically haven’t been great with pricing tablets … I’ll have to wait and see what this beast will run before I start drooling about specs.

  • http://goncalossilva.com goncalossilva

That CPU and display are looking sexy… I’m eager for high-resolution to be the default on tablets. About the name – I’m not sure if that’s not better than Samsung Galaxy Tab Rocket Plus Infinity (or something like that).

  • sap 26

Glad to see a tablet coming out that has specs different than every other tablet out now (i.e. 1 GB RAM, Tegra 2, 10.1″ screen) And I’m interested in seeing how the smaller bezel will effect the ergonomics of the device.

  • cheeseasaurus

I’m curious how the performance will be, sounds like amazing specs, but that’s alot of pixels to push.

  • Kevin Amundson

I really like this move away from the petite 7″ screens and onto some large screen tablets. I could hold off from purchasing a 10″ with an almost 12″ screen just around the corner.

don’t care if my eyes will end up bleeding trying to read that high a resolution on such a small screen, must have…

  • http://www.jimtravis.com jimtravis

Have the original Galaxy Tab 7 (Verizon), Tab 8.9, Player 5 (great device), Vibrant, and Nexus S. I am very happy with Samsung tablets / phones, and this sounds like a substantial enhancement assuming specs are correct, and size is not much larger than the 10.1. Hope the bezel isn’t too small to hold the tablet without blocking the screen. I don’t have the problem with TouchWiz others seem to have (do respect their opinions though). Don’t like all the Wiz enhancements, but overall, consider them a positive. Samsung seems to be on a roll, and 2012 looks like that momentum will continue.

One of the best Classic WM devices was the Samsung Mondi, a Sprint WiMax based device with a great screen, a physical keyboard, and one of the best soft keyboards I have used. Unfortunately, it was released before WiMax was available in many cities, but it had a nice interface, and quality build.

  • http://ilysespieces.tumblr.com Ilyse Rose

That sounds all around sick, though I don’t trust a Samsung until I hear the reviews/see it in action.

  • eioous

    An 11″ tablet…BOOOOOOOOOMMMMMMMM!!!!!!!!

*That was the sound of my head exploding from this Awesomeness!

  • jst4tim

Thinner bezel is all good but what is this going to do with the thickness Samsung already needs to slim down in my opinion.

  • humidity

Ugh! This sounds amazing but I think I still want the Transformer Prime. Decisions!

  • smisa27

Ooo! I am liking this! Except for the fact that it’s going to be dual core. I do love the fact that it’s going to have NFC. I like that feature, and I thought it would be a great idea to add that to a tablet. Also, the fact that it’s going to be Retina-Type quality for a screen?! That’s awesome! The only thing drawing me back is the dual core. I wonder how that’s going to stand against the likes of the Transformer Prime and other quad cores coming out.

  • Six8Six

    If true, SWEET!!

  • Jorge Eslava

The Transformer Prime will keep me happy until this comes out.

  • mattcoz

Smaller bezel is not a good thing, tablets need something to grip on to.

    • OsamaDROIDladden

Thats not a problem for me,because i never hold my 10.1by the bezel

  • F-B

Interesting to see how they solved the thin-bezel dilemma? Obviously it will look sexy, but who’s it for holding the tab in your hands? Will your holding hand touch the screen by accident? If they solved, it will be good looking.

  • ToonPanda

    BOOM :D now THAT’s a display resolution!

  • vid500

Ok, this sounds awsome. But whay do ther have to be so many good looking and yet good sounding tablets. I want them all:)

  • Kris Isaksen

I can’t wait to see this. I think I’ll hold off from getting the transformer prime for a while.

  • http://androidtidbits.com Androidtidbits.com

I love Samsung’s powerful innards inside their device. But I would really like a device with a sturdy build. Maybe its about time for Samsung to leave plastic chassis behind into a more solid structure.

    • http://www.jimtravis.com jimtravis

I understand, and respect that there are different opinions about the use of plastics in gadgets. I have found all my Samsung gadgets to be well built, and hold-up quite well. My 7″ Tab, which has been used daily for a year, looks, and feels as solid as the day I purchased it. The 8.9″ is relatively new, but so far, excellent durability. My Nexus S has been dropped many times with barely a scratch. If I had dropped the metal / glass phone, I am sure I would have had several expensive repairs by now. I understand / respect differing opinions, but my main concerns are the overall build quality, and how well the device holds up; don’t care which material is used to make those qualities happen.

  • Lucian Veliman

Is this resolution supported by ICS?

Don’t like all the Wiz enhancements, but overall, consider them a positive. Samsung seems to be on a roll, and 2012 looks like that momentum will continue.

One of the best Classic WM devices was the Samsung Mondi, a Sprint WiMax based device with a great screen, a physical keyboard, and one of the best soft keyboards I have used. Unfortunately, it was released before WiMax was available in many cities, but it had a nice interface, and quality build.

  50. That sounds all around sick, though I don’t trust a Samsung until I hear the reviews/see it in action.

  51. An 11″ tablet…BOOOOOOOOOMMMMMMMM!!!!!!!!

*That was the sound of my head exploding from this Awesomeness!

  52. Thinner bezel is all good but what is this going to do with the thickness Samsung already needs to slim down in my opinion.

  53. Ugh! This sounds amazing but I think I still want the Transformer Prime. Decisions!

  55. The Transformer Prime will keep me happy until this comes out.

  56. Smaller bezel is not a good thing, tablets need something to grip on to.

  57. How bad ass would it be if on the 26th day of the giveaway andme got mad hookups and gave one of us this tablet brought back from the future!!??
    One can dream.

  58. would be so sexy *drools at the thought*

  59. very nice, can’t wait to play with this one.

  60. I love me some samsung products!

  61. 2560 x 1600????? my god do I wait for this or the TransPrime?? AAhhhh the choices!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  62. Interesting to see how they solved the thin-bezel dilemma? Obviously it will look sexy, but who’s it for holding the tab in your hands? Will your holding hand touch the screen by accident? If they solved, it will be good looking.

  63. BOOM :D now THAT’s a display resolution!

  64. Ok, this sounds awsome. But whay do ther have to be so many good looking and yet good sounding tablets. I want them all:)

  65. If I could get tablet like this I would be needed to upgrade my PC :D

  66. I can’t wait to see this. I think I’ll hold off from getting the transformer prime for a while.

  67. I love Samsung’s powerful innards inside their device. But I would really like a device with a sturdy build. Maybe its about time for Samsung to leave plastic chassis behind into a more solid structure.

    • I understand, and respect that there are different opinions about the use of plastics in gadgets.

  68. Is this resolution supported by ICS?

  69. 2560 x 1600
    thats incredible!!!

  70. A 2560 x 1600 resolution? Can I just send Samsung my money now? Funny, for my desktop I needed to buy a 30″ ips monitor to get that kind of resolution.

  71. This rumor has to become reality

  72. micro sd port pls!! sammy pls!! just bec ipads don’t have microsd doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t have one either.

  73. wonder how the 2ghz would compare in performance to a quad core

  74. Way to go Samsung..but plz keep the prices down. :-)

  75. Im just in awe of how these tablets are like PADS on Star Trek…The future is now. :)

  76. sounds like an intense machine. i know 11″ isn’t THAT much bigger bug what is going to be the max size tablet makers go for?

  77. this sounds great. i love the samsung tablets and think they have amazing clarity and processing speeds. i cant wait to see it.
