Verizon on Galaxy Nexus: Still on track to launch “this year”

verizon-galaxy-nexus-front-

So much for Verizon staying silent on the Galaxy Nexus launch. We finally received a statement from their corporate PR team.

The Galaxy Nexus is still on track to launch this year. We will definitely send a press release to announce availability. Feel free to visit www.verizonwireless.com/galaxynexus to sign up for email alerts to be one of the first to know.Corporate PRVerizon Wireless

Back to waiting for that press release, I guess.

Anyone surprised? the announcement will probably come the morning of launch

      • mothy

I agree, from the people Ive talked to (friends that work at Verizon) it will be a soft launch only.

      • Dylan

not really knowing Verizon’s history of botched phone releases but still holding on to that last bit of hope that it launches tomorrow but not holding my breath

      • Shadowlore

They’ve officially announced devices days after they’ve been out in the past too. I wouldn’t be shocked to see them wait a few days after it’s out to announce it.. just to ‘gauge’ how quickly it traveled via word of mouth.

      • http://ArtisticAbode.com BetterWithRoot

        I can see VZW now.

“Hey everyone, we got a new phone available…it’s the Galaxy Nexus. But you want to buy a new droid that we are pushing instead. It has all the bloatware you have asked us for.”

    • LukeT32

      Just be before Jan!

    • Charles

Actually I visited the verizon stand in BJs (Kissimmee,Fl) I asked the rep about the galaxy nexus. Rep stated that it comes out this thursday he looked like the manager at the store. Then he proceeded to hand me a galaxy nexus he had back there. Pics or it didnt happen I know.

See… they left themselves a loophole once again!

    • stenzor

I think they actually meant “within a year” hehehe

I love the fact that this is tagged as “the never ending story.” haha

Finally, some good, official news. People want the Galaxy Nexus!

    • tupz

That’s not good news. They are contractually obligated to get this out in 2011.

      • http://goncalossilva.com goncalossilva

Nope, it was good news. It’s out! :D

Ha Ha my thoughts exactly- that about sums it up doesn’t it!

  • Bigtop77

That says a lot without saying anything.

  • Wayne Winkler

They are waiting for the ability to return things until January 15th to end so they don’t get a lot of restocks from the RAZR and Rezound

  • amgala

Sorry, but this doesn’t give me any sense of security. “Still on track” means nothing when talking about VZW delays.

  • Mfg68

I’m getting mine tomorrow. My Verizon store had no idea last night but this morning they got notification that tomorrow is the day.

  • j
  • staryoshi

If you’re going to wait for the GNexus, stay strong! Don’t settle on a phone that isn’t right for you… But if you do settle, check out the rezound – It felt pretty slick when I played with it. We’ll see what tomorrow brings though, hopefully it will be more than a quazi-white Razr :)

  • http://www.ndroidgamers.com B2L

I bet this will be the last year Verizon gets a Nexus device first. Might even be the last year they get any Nexus device.

    • mothy

LOL probably but sad for me!

    • nsnsmj

I hope so. Google made a mistake with deciding to launch a Nexus device on Verizon. The exclusivity makes it even worse.

      • http://www.ndroidgamers.com B2L

I definitely have to agree with you. Google never had problems releasing the Nexus One or Nexus S in a decent amount of time with T-Mobile. I blame Verizon for making me import a GSM Galaxy Nexus. They are holding off the launch for all carriers, which is screwing over all of the consumers in the US.

        • Black Kristos

I want this phone, too, but I don’t understand all this anger over a rumored exclusive deal. Yes, it does seem that Verizon has botched this release, but wait times like this are nothing different for the Nexus line in the US. I’ve said this before in other threads, but I’ll lay it out again:

T-Mobile was the first to support the Nexus One on 01/05/10. AT&T made it available on 03/16/10, over two months later. Sprint & Verizon passed on the Nexus One in May and April, respecively. There was never any talk about T-Mobile having an “exclusive”, simply that it took time for AT&T to bring it to market and the others to pass on it.

The Nexus S was demoed on 11/15/10 by Schmidt. The Nexus S became available on 12/16/10 in the US for T-Mobile and AT&T. It took Sprint over 5 months to release the Nexus S 4G in May. Again, Verizon passed on it. Also, never any talk of an “exclusive”.

We all want the phone, and we all wish that it had been released closer to the 10/19/11 announcement, but that doesn’t change the fact that Verizon having an LTE released handset, and other carriers following with thier own HSPA+/LTE versions, is just business as usual.

    • nwilliam3

My guess is Verizon doesn’t give a damn. They took this phone solely to keep it from competing against the RAZR and Rezound during the holidays. They couldn’t care less about this Nexus or any future Nexus. They are perfectly happy with their heavily branded phones full of crapware.

      • Andrew Castro

With Apple dropping the ball and the “late” release of the Nexus, Verizon Droid phones will sell.

Hopefully Google is pissed right now and gives the next Nexus to someone that wants to sell it. With all the Droids coming out by Verizon the Nexus will just get lost in the clutter.

  • mothy

They need people to buy a Razr and Rezound to clear over bloated stock probably.

    • john

I bought a razr and took it back! They screwed up with the razr by announcing the razrMax with bigger battery and hd. It should have nothing to do with the gnex

  • Black Kristos

Jesus. This is just getting so out of hand.

  • zyphbear

While I signed up again, it’s almost like they are trying to find a way to just keep it until the radar instead of actually announcing it. Almost like they figure this is for the hardcore fan and not the casual consumer.

Let’s hope “This year” doesn’t mean December 31.

  • http://www.jpfowler.com SSJGohon

    Remember 12/31/11 @ 11:59:59 is still 2011 T_T

    WORST LAUNCH EVER…..

But it seems @ least you guys stirred something up

  • http://evelio.info evelio

barely supports 31st release rumor… pissed off but still waiting for one Galaxy Nexus LTE

  • Jeb

and…… face palm! ugh just launch already!

  • Peter Dowling

You know what, the phone is worth the wait still. So lets just be patient

  • Shadowlore

Both stores I’ve inquired about the GNex at have actually called in the last 3 hours or so to tell me to come in tomorrow.

Additionally 1 friend that lives in another state said they were told to put up the marketing displays for it today for tomorrow’s launch.

Still, aside from all that… I’m still not holding my breath.. I honestly think it’s become a freaking game to Verizon.

  • jamal

Dear Corporate PR, can you tell us something we don’t already know.

  • Alex Fischer

Please. Verizon wants to push their Razr and upcoming Droid 4 which is why the Galaxy Nexus has yet to be released. We all know that stores have stock of them, and some have been lucky enough to walk into said stores and purchase the phone.

Verizon is about Verizon and it’s a shame that Google didn’t realize this when they were deciding on launch partners. Google should have partnered with either T-Mobile or ATT, because then at least those on both networks would enjoy it (as it’s a pentaband 4g phone). Verizon wants to push the brand that they think is most beneficial, despite the fact that the Galaxy Nexus blows the Razr and the upcoming Droid 4 out of the water (in my opinion).

I feel for those of you on Verizon that aren’t able to get your hands on a device that should have been launched a while ago. It’s truly an amazing device. I just hope Verizon doesn’t go all Nexus One, and decide “eh, we’re not selling it,” though that seems unlikely, as there’s stock in various stores.

  • Jon Shiflett

omg, seriously? I’m not pleased. I’m thinking of getting a rental razr just to hold me over…assuming they release the galaxy before the return period is over.

  • http://www.facebook.com/home.php?#!/profile.php?id=583695634&ref=profile rahuly2k7

“This Year”? That’s just funny! Yea may be on December 31st at 11:59PM

  • http://youtube.com/user/jawckamoe Marcus

Well it’s about time they say at least SOMETHING. They act as if we didn’t know this phone had to be released this year though. Aren’t they supposed to release the phone this year?

  • rocktoonz

I still think the major reason for the delay is that Verizon drastically underestimated demand for this phone, and want to both get more stock to handle it and get marketing lined up for it.

  • Shane Dumas

So they are still on track for this year. That is good to hear because no one really had a clue with the train wreck of rumors. We thought we did but it turns out no one does and it shows every time a new rumor goes past the date. And if they are on track for this year that only gives them 2 more weeks. Then why in hell not announce it already and not wait till a day before it is released. It is not like they are outing something 3 months away.

  • AceoStar

    Faces of Sad

  • Jimmy13

sucks they don’t have the search button there by default in ICS. I have apps mapped to that button.

  • triangle

I would have thought that Verizon would want to push this out so that they can get more people off of their 3G network. They are promoting the hell out of 4G with the double capacity promotion, but they are keeping the best 4G off the network. Everyone on 3G should just max out on their capacity usage as a protest for Verizon being so stupid and short sighted!

  • Bryan Stoner

I bet Republic Wireless will get the Nexus before Verizon at this rate.

  • chrism28

on track = dec 31st. i wonder if exclusive status starts from release date? where’s the countdown for GSM release? :D

    • nwilliam3

According to my local store (take it for what it is worth), the exclusive period runs through Jan 12th. They believe the RAZR will get ICS shortly there after. Again, big grain of salt with this one.

I’d say exclusive period probably began when the phone was announced in October. Verizon’s whole goal with the exclusive period to to prevent other carriers form offering Android 4.0 phones while they were trying to sell their RAZR. They don’t really care who offers what after the holidays are over.

  • ramenchef

I’ll believe it when I see it.

  • Adam

My VZW store confirmed tomorrow as the launch date!

  • thekaz

why do I have this feeling that waiting through 2+ months of hype, I will be disappointed and wind up buying a different phone anyhow..?

  • nwilliam3

Verizon is not going to sacrifice a single second of potential sales time for their beloved RAZR by announcing the Nexus before they absolutely have to. My guess is the announcement will come several hours after they actually release the handset.

  • Marc’us H.

It will come on the day you least expect, and out of money from shopping for the holidays. I think because this isn’t a “Verizon” phone, they see no urgency in getting it out there.

  • mclarensr

More than this news, I like the ‘Never ending story’ tag.

  • CdtDelta

    Worst…product….launch….ever…..

  • kidslice

The part that if missing is the fine print: “The Galaxy Nexus is still on track to launch this year*”

    * year = 2012

Someone should be getting a nice pink slip in their Christmas/Chanukah/Kwanza/Other card this year… how do you mess this up this bad around the holiday season???

    • Andrew Castro

They can always make the lucrative New Years Eve shopping holiday.

  • Kaote

11:59 p.m. 12/31/11 is still this year, right?

  • yogi

Any chance ATT will get a version of this?

    • frpst9

AT&T had a version pass through the FCC, if I’m not mistaken. They might beat Verizon to the punch!

    • Himal Limbu

      att version did pass thru.

  • Andrew Castro

Reminds me of the whole Droid Charge mess. By the time this phone drops Jell-O or what ever has been announced and released by Sprint already as the “Google Nexus Touch LTE Jell-O”……

  • http://ilysespieces.tumblr.com Ilyse Rose

Verizon just keeps making it worse every time they say anything other than a concrete date.

  • Dirge

Hm, just called my local VZ store and they said it’ll launch tomorrow. I find it interesting because I’ve called a few times before and they always said they had to info on a a launch date. Woo, finally! The rep asked if I was coming in tomorrow for it, I said yeah, so he said just come in and we’ll get you set up(since I’ll be switching from a Rezound).

  • Starship

Well is it the calender year or fiscal year? Because the fiscal ends 6/30 :-P

  • Bob Someguy

Chinese calendar? Arabic calendar? Lunar calendar? Made up pixie calendar?

  • psipher

Verizon’s new slogan: It’s the Network…just not the phone you want.

  • redraider133

This is the same canned response verizon has been giving everyone for weeks. Nothing new here.

  • Billy

I don’t know … kind of vague with the pr, ‘this year’ .. hmmm.

VZW fiscal year ends Dec. 31, 2011. Let’s hope they are not on the Hebrew calendar … could be a long wait.

Maybe they have their own internal VZW calendar where the world ends after they release a Nexus device. I’ll chance it …

  • coryteague

I understand companies having delays on releases for whatever reason, but why do we not ever have a definite release date? I mean come on. You wouldn’t be able to get away with this in the movie industry. Think about what would happen if this was how they did business.

Indiana Jones and the Center of the Earth releasing sometime this Christmas or later or maybe next year.

wouldn’t work. we should start putting the pressure on companies to stick to releases and actually announce them.

AND QUIT putting out so many phones!!! they are all the same at this point and it really makes it frustrating knowing that I could purchase a Galaxy Nexus “this year” and two days later the Galaxy Nexus Prime Elite is announced for a release that might happen in the next 8 months for a simple camera upgrade or design redo. FRUSTRATING.

  • Henry Gomes

Ice Cream Sandwich will be melted by the time they want to release.

  • Louis A

Where is that verizon wireless guy?? Can you hear me? Change to, Do you have the phone? No!, Good!

  • David Hughes

I’ve been on the wait list since it was announced, yet VZ has been quite about it all along and this is what we get. My local store would not say when it’s coming, but I’ll show up in the morning just in case, I waited eight weeks for my Incredible after it’s release date, which looks like it could happen again

  • Skis03

I hope it just comes out on Friday! My Droid 2 is dying slowly! I need me an Ice Cream Sandwich!

  • n25philly

lol, so glad I don’t want this thing

  • David

On track = nothing. All they really said is “if the phone stays on track, it will release this year.” The phone being on track now does not necessarily imply it will be on track tomorrow. So, logically (and legally) speaking, Verizon has still not promised to release the phone this year. Also, they promised to send a press release to announce availability, however, they did not promise to send the press release before the availability occurred. In short, the phone could be released any time between now and the end of time, and/or the press release could come anytime between now and the end of time, and this message will still prove to be true. Furthermore, this is a press release, it contains an announcement, and it is about availability, so with only a slight amount of creative interpretation, you could say that Verizon has already fulfilled the only promise in the message (“We will” send a press release to announce availability). In summary, not only does this message tell us nothing we don’t already know, it tells us nothing. Period. At least they were nice enough to remind us of the website where we can enter our email address and sign up to hear more about nothing.

  • MoSDeeb

If any company ever needs to study “what not to do when announcing or staying silent on a product”; They should study Verizon’s ridiculous behavior on this launch.

This isn’t a secret product; it has been both announced and observed. Just say something with substance in the message.

    Just terrible on Verizon’s part….

  • rczik

    T-minus 418 hours and counting.

  • gelfud

I just called several corp stores and got nothing in terms of good info to confirm/deny a release, tomorrow, 12/15. Now, just in case, I called a certified reseller thinking that they would not be dealing with corporate bs managers telling them to be mum about a release. This guy told me to come by at noon E., tomorrow, and that they had a confirmation email telling them that tomorrow is a “GO” for a release…. But, but, but… they have none in stock, and that nobody has any in stock (yeah, I know the rumors of them sitting in locked cages), and unless they recieve some today, or tomorrow morning, that I would essentially have to buy it and wait for them to receive it, for them to call me, and then go there to pick it up. Again, out of 5 corp stores, and 1 reseller, I only got confirmation on 12/15 release from one guy, the reseller.

    • NegativeOne13

Same story just like that last week. They told me they were unable to order it in until 12/15.

      • gelfud

yeah, we shall see… I am taking it all with a grain of salt. Do I really “need” to drop cash on a new phone anyway, with x-mas right around the corner and a ton of gifts that I have to buy???

  • NegativeOne13

Their announcement is that the phone will be available today. No marketing or promotions to squeeze out all they can with the Razr. It’s just going to be silently available.

  • Scott Engemann

This really sucks. As pissed off as I am, and I’m sure others are as well, we’d love to just up and leave Verizon Wireless in a “Boy-cot” fashion. As soon as that would happen, the Nexus would be release, and we’d all want back. I hate it when big companies have you by the gonads.

At this point, I begin to wonder if Verizon’s motive of getting the exclusivity of the Galaxy Nexus is not to give us the best Android phone for the holiday, but to NOT letting any other carriers to have the best Android phone for the holiday! They don’t care about a stock Android OS, and only want to load craps in Android phones. They got a hold of the GN for the holiday seasons, so that no other carriers could have it. Then they put all the resources into promoting the RAZR, and keep the mouth shut on the GN.

    • My guess is Verizon doesn’t give a damn. They took this phone solely to keep it from competing against the RAZR and Rezound during the holidays. They couldn’t care less about this Nexus or any future Nexus. They are perfectly happy with their heavily branded phones full of crapware.

      • With Apple dropping the ball and the “late” release of the Nexus, Verizon Droid phones will sell.

Hopefully Google is pissed right now and gives the next Nexus to someone that wants to sell it. With all the Droids coming out by Verizon the Nexus will just get lost in the clutter.

  13. They need people to buy a Razr and Rezound to clear over bloated stock probably.

    • johnGuest 3 years ago

I bought a razr and took it back! They screwed up with the razr by announcing the razrMax with bigger battery and hd. It should have nothing to do with the gnex

  14. Jesus. This is just getting so out of hand.

  15. While I signed up again, it’s almost like they are trying to find a way to just keep it until the radar instead of actually announcing it. Almost like they figure this is for the hardcore fan and not the casual consumer.

Let’s hope “This year” doesn’t mean December 31.

  16. Remember 12/31/11 @ 11:59:59 is still 2011 T_T

    WORST LAUNCH EVER…..

But it seems @ least you guys stirred something up

  17. barely supports 31st release rumor… pissed off but still waiting for one Galaxy Nexus LTE

  18. and…… face palm! ugh just launch already!

  19. You know what, the phone is worth the wait still. So lets just be patient

  21. Dear Corporate PR, can you tell us something we don’t already know.

  23. omg, seriously? I’m not pleased. I’m thinking of getting a rental razr just to hold me over…assuming they release the galaxy before the return period is over.

  24. “This Year”? That’s just funny! Yea may be on December 31st at 11:59PM

  25. Well it’s about time they say at least SOMETHING. They act as if we didn’t know this phone had to be released this year though. Aren’t they supposed to release the phone this year?

  26. I still think the major reason for the delay is that Verizon drastically underestimated demand for this phone, and want to both get more stock to handle it and get marketing lined up for it.

  28. sucks they don’t have the search button there by default in ICS. I have apps mapped to that button.

  30. I bet Republic Wireless will get the Nexus before Verizon at this rate.

  31. on track = dec 31st. i wonder if exclusive status starts from release date? where’s the countdown for GSM release? :D

    • According to my local store (take it for what it is worth), the exclusive period runs through Jan 12th.

  32. I’ll believe it when I see it.

  33. AdamGuest 3 years ago

My VZW store confirmed tomorrow as the launch date!

  34. why do I have this feeling that waiting through 2+ months of hype, I will be disappointed and wind up buying a different phone anyhow..?

  35. Verizon is not going to sacrifice a single second of potential sales time for their beloved RAZR by announcing the Nexus before they absolutely have to. My guess is the announcement will come several hours after they actually release the handset.

  36. It will come on the day you least expect, and out of money from shopping for the holidays. I think because this isn’t a “Verizon” phone, they see no urgency in getting it out there.

  37. More than this news, I like the ‘Never ending story’ tag.

  38. CdtDeltaGuest 3 years ago

    Worst…product….launch….ever…..

  39. The part that if missing is the fine print: “The Galaxy Nexus is still on track to launch this year*”

    * year = 2012

Someone should be getting a nice pink slip in their Christmas/Chanukah/Kwanza/Other card this year… how do you mess this up this bad around the holiday season???

  40. 11:59 p.m. 12/31/11 is still this year, right?

  41. Any chance ATT will get a version of this?

  42. Reminds me of the whole Droid Charge mess. By the time this phone drops Jell-O or what ever has been announced and released by Sprint already as the “Google Nexus Touch LTE Jell-O”……

  43. Verizon just keeps making it worse every time they say anything other than a concrete date.

  45. Well is it the calender year or fiscal year? Because the fiscal ends 6/30 :-P

  46. Bob SomeguyGuest 3 years ago

Chinese calendar? Arabic calendar? Lunar calendar? Made up pixie calendar?

  47. Verizon’s new slogan: It’s the Network…just not the phone you want.

  48. This is the same canned response verizon has been giving everyone for weeks. Nothing new here.

  51. Ice Cream Sandwich will be melted by the time they want to release.

  52. Where is that verizon wireless guy?? Can you hear me? Change to, Do you have the phone? No!, Good!

  53. I’ve been on the wait list since it was announced, yet VZ has been quite about it all along and this is what we get. My local store would not say when it’s coming, but I’ll show up in the morning just in case, I waited eight weeks for my Incredible after it’s release date, which looks like it could happen again

  54. I hope it just comes out on Friday! My Droid 2 is dying slowly! I need me an Ice Cream Sandwich!

  55. lol, so glad I don’t want this thing

  56. DavidGuest 3 years ago

  57. If any company ever needs to study “what not to do when announcing or staying silent on a product”; They should study Verizon’s ridiculous behavior on this launch.

This isn’t a secret product; it has been both announced and observed. Just say something with substance in the message.

    Just terrible on Verizon’s part….

    • Same story just like that last week. They told me they were unable to order it in until 12/15.

      • gelfudGuest 3 years ago

yeah, we shall see… I am taking it all with a grain of salt. Do I really “need” to drop cash on a new phone anyway, with x-mas right around the corner and a ton of gifts that I have to buy???

  60. Their announcement is that the phone will be available today. No marketing or promotions to squeeze out all they can with the Razr. It’s just going to be silently available.

  62. mdlindcGuest 3 years ago

Ahhh…if only Verizon ran a GSM network.

  63. This year wow mabey it will be some day :)

  64. Signed up for email notification… feels like I did that already though.

  65. boo, i say to you, Verizon

  66. Nice job Verizon, NICE JOB

  67. This guy:
    https://plus.google.com/u/0/104219703867174271898/posts
who seems to be CEO of SirSynct Wireless (see his LinkedIn page: http://www.linkedin.com/in/sirlance99 ) is claiming he has official go-ahead to start selling the Nexus tomorrow.

  68. They finally said something :D

  69. Wow! That was helpful….lol.

  70. I like how they quoted, ”this year”. Its barely half of the month left til next year, I think we can hang on a little longer guys!

  71. I don’t know whether to laugh or cry.

  73. I already know I got to wait for tmobile so I aint stressing it ….i got the nexus s so I’m just stressing about when ics coming out for my phone any word on that!

  74. I know that Rafe and Molly at cnet are beside themselves!

  75. It’s too bad Google didn’t just tell VZ that the rest of the carriers can start selling the GNex on jan 1st. We would have seen it like a month ago…

  76. Got tired of waiting picked up an SGS2, it was for the best anyway…didn’t really want to switch over to Verizon. Hopefully T-Mobile will have soon in the new year, I’ll pick it up then.

  77. VZW just posted on their twitter it’s tomorrow. 12/15/11 F’n finally.

  78. Verizon just announced Galaxy Nexus is launching tomorrow, December 15th

  79. Even after the announcement, I still didn’t get an email from Verizon…

  80. The Verizon store here in Chicago told me it’s gonna be the 22nd of this month. Already picked up some goodies for the phone.

  81. RichGuest 3 years ago

Got the announcement email at 256 am est and can order online now.
