Android activations top 700k devices per day

So much for those talks of Android slowing down and reaching its peak. Andy Rubin just shared that there are now over 700,000 Android devices activated every day, up from 500,000 per day in June. Activations only count new devices that were put on a network by subscribing to a wireless service, so the total number of Android devices being sold could be much higher. If this growth continues to accelerate, we should see 1,000,000 activations per day in the first half of next year.

    Wow, this is crazy!

    • AsakuraZero

crazy is not enough, this is out of the imagination who would expect this kind of success?

      • erikiksaz

Just crunched some numbers, there are almost 500 activations EVERY MINUTE of the day!

        • tmihai20

What do they really mean? Does it mean that seven hundred thousand devices are bought every day? Then the number is kinda big :D

          • Lewis McGeary

            From Andy Rubin himself:
‘…and for those wondering, we count each device only once (ie, we don’t count re-sold devices), and “activations” means you go into a store, buy a device, put it on the network by subscribing to a wireless service.’

Big numbers, and that suggests it doesn’t include Wi-fi only devices!

          • keridel

            Not really that big.

There are 7 billion people on the planet. Not US billion (100 milion) but EU billion (1000 million) thats a lot of people to vuy phones :)

          • Andrew Barkett

That is not the difference between US and EU numbers. Here is a description of how it actually works. What this article says, and how Americans normally use the term ‘billion’ are the same.

      • aykutb

I did expect this a year ago, I even got at least 10 friends of mine an android

  • ramenchef

Just goes to show that Android is succeeding despite all of Apple’s and Microsoft’s attempts to slow it down with stupid software patents.

    • mac08wrx

I agree all of it is a stupid mess but still Android shines and continues to grow

  • jamal adam

Can’t wait till that million activation’s per day mark. Go Android!!

    • Futureboy

I think Google should celebrate and do another app sale or something similar when they hit the 1 million mark. =)

      • Thomas Biard

Or Google just put everything they sell on sale, to help us users out!

      • koorsr

        Free Galaxy’s for all!

        • Nizar Ghosn

          … hahaha , ammmmazing dude

  • steve19137

So, that would be 365 million new Android devices in a single year. Are there really that many people buying new phones?

    • dafi81

Apparently, why should they lie ;)

    • keridel

Not just phones but tablets as well.

  • Marcus

Woah. That is a lot. It’s crazy to think that over 1,000,000 Android will be activated per day pretty soon… Keep it up, Android! :D

  • Aladdin

And Microsoft’s sits in a corner with an evil smirk on its face, counting all the money it’s getting

  • jimtravis

Very impressive number, and shows no signs of slowing other than the occasional short term hiccup or two which is expected.

  • NamelessTed

I’m not sure my brain is capable of truly understanding what activating a million phones a day is like.

  • oddball

So those numbers don’t even count wifi only devices? How do they count tablet activations then? Impressive as these numbers are it seems like they are low if they aren’t counting those.

    • dark_funk

That was my first thought, too. If this doesn’t even include the Kindle Fire or B&N Tablets, which are selling by the 100s of thousands per day, the total number could very well be over a million per day already. Yikes!

  • psipher

i’m curious what the breakdown is by country.

  • Rob

    RESISTANCE IS FUTILE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • Enrique Zapata

that’s remains me of the Borg.

  • Prime

Yes it would be nice to know the break down by country! I wonder what apple its going to say now?

  • Jorge Eslava

Android will soon control the world, we are lucky enough to be on their good side. I feel sorry for all those iphone users and windows phone users who will be executed once Android has full control of the world.

  • Cole Loomis

Just to think that a little over 2 years ago no one new what Android was when they saw my OG Droid.

  • stenzor

Awesome.. I can’t wait for the reaction of Apple fanboys when they realize that their device is not “#1″ anymore

    • Joshua Barta

Even if Android devices outsold i-devices 99-to-1, aPple fanboys would be incapable of seeing the truth.

      • tmihai20

I am not denying that Apple devices are not good, I am only saying that they are not that good as the fanboys are saying and that they are worth the price. I bet fanboys will never quit, since Jobs is being transformed into an icon by the media (a little forcibly).

  • Martjn2

Wow it’s growing fast! more android to the people!

  • abdallah1

    Wow !
    700k per Day,
    4.9M per Week ,
    19M per Month,
    235M per year !
    Unbelievable !

    • ndub21

      I’m impressed with your calculations.

      • phil

        i’m not…700,000/day is 255,500,000/year…just sayin

  • booyootoo

    Really impressive!

What would be a nice stat though, is how many devices aren’t used anymore.

I just bought a new device and dont use the old one anymore.

What if i give it away, or have disassembled?

This does show android is popular, but does not show how many devices are actually used at the moment.

I guess that number would be mind blowing as well.

    • sap 26

That’s an interesting thought. You’d think that number is much higher. I’m glad to see so many supporting Android.

  • jenskristian

It’s pretty crazy. Hopefully Android will stay creative and keep it going. Can’t wait for Android 10.0 Oreo Cream Pie!

    • Eric

they would never use a brand name product name like oreo..

  • Hall Lo

Way to go Android! ;D Keep it going!

  • Dan13

This is amazing, but with how great Android is, I’m surprised we’re surprised. Go team android!

  • staryoshi

Stay the course, team Android (while innovating it, that is). Also, I like to visualize this statistic as a pile of 700,000 phones :D

  • Joshua Barta

Well over double the 300,000 a day in December 2010….

  • Rob Vermeij

Goooo Android! Don’t let Apple get in the way, they (Apple) now even obtained a patent for multi-tasking somehow… :S

  • alejoar

Never been so proud of someone elses success

  • zyphbear

This is some great news, I know I almost teared up a little when it was announced it was 500k knowing that we are all here behind Android.

Let’s cross our fingers and hope for the million mark to come early in 2012!

  • tkitty93

Nice. Android growing so fast. I made the right choice to get SGS2 instead of iPhone 4 back in August :D

  • MJM128

700k a day AND “Activations only count new devices that were put on a network by subscribing to a wireless service, so the total number of Android devices being sold could be much higher.”

I truly hope this success continues at an even greater rate. :D

  • Luke Haviland

the iPhone fad is finally ending
people are realizing a toy phone shouldn’t cost that much
and getting a real hand held

  • http://no stokis

i hope Android market will be full with great tab aps like apple, someday..

  • vid500

Wow, incredible. They just keep going and going, amazing. As much as I appreciate the growth of new android users, I just hope they recycle the old phones.

  • beatrixasdfghjk.

It’s going to outstrip population growth, until eventually, the whole world has Android (:

  • breinhar

I don’t understand how you could have a million activations a day. It atleast not for very long. At that rate you’d have a billion users in 3 years…. Those type of numbers must drop off eventually, youll run out of cell phone owners.

    • keridel

But of course in those 3 yeaes people who bought phones will be re buying phones as their contracts will be up..

  • mrbill187

The little rocket packet android robot looks awesome!

  • Kaote

Thats great news, with a customer base as big as android is getting, we should see some really good app developments coming down the line.

  • w9jds

I like that they also said last month that over 200 million devices have been activated in total. Congratulations Google, your success makes me all teary eyed :D

  • GeauxLSU

I wonder if this counts off contract phone purchases also.

  • MWard

Pretty impressive considering where Android was 2 years ago.

  • HoLfElDeR

That is what i call BEST OS :), are we gona see 1bill activation soon, i hope so.

  • azulpiscina

Could be more, if Apple stop their crusade against Android…

  • Steve Heinrich

This is awesome. I think the obvious key difference between Android and the i-devices is that there are affordable Android devices for everyone. The variety is bringing huge success, as it should. Here’s to continued success!

  • Lee Swanson

Amazing! I wonder how much of this is due to the 4g advantage.

    • Louis A

      I don’t think very much

  • DroidPower

If it keeps on going at this rate, there shouldn’t be any doubt of what Eric Schmidt predicted will be true (i.e. app developers will choose to develop Android first to develop in six months).

  • ArticulateFool

Our family is growing into an empire.

  • ndub21

    Go Andriod Go Android Go!

  • bellken

this doesn’t count wifi only tablets, I would bet the actual number is quite a bit higher

  • amgala

Android is winning the war against the villians!

  • Jeb

any guesses as to how long it will take for this number to reach 1 Million?

  • Torrance Barber

Android is number one! What more can be said?

  • Alex Pena

Pretty crazy stuff. I’m glad I’m part of the 700k activation’s

  • redraider133

This number can keep increasing and mosy likely will continue to with all the choice people have to choose an android phone that is perfect for them.

  • Louis A

Wow wow wow, that’s stupid high! This’s a total global smart phone domination. Take that apple, microsoft, blackberry…bitch slap!!

  • Chuxter

700K divided by 100K is my favorite number! What a coincidence! :-)

  • Vitti

That’s a lot of little green robots!

  • Billy

    The Android army is here!

  • Alexis Piraina

Soon every single person on earth will have an Android.
As much for a greener world.

  • Skis03

I cannot believe how many devices are activated per day that is amazing!

  • lxgeorge

This article was short and sweet; I love it. The Go Android!

  • OpenIntro

Pretty amazing growth! It seems like it grows by 100k each month! I’m curious if and when we will see this trend start to flatten out or even trend downwards though.

  • _Diego

    Mind. Blown.

  • Samar

More activations, more load carriers..buckle Up. Don’t need another Outage.

  • Waspdroid

    Unbeliavable :)

  • goncalossilva

    Well… it’s definitely over 9000 :D

    1M, here we go!

  • Adryan maldonado

Holy cow thats super impressive a 200,00 jump in just a few months is awesome. The android is the tallest mountain known to man. Its called Kilamanjarotonsofandroidsphones.

    • fatigue

Sagarmatha or Mount Everest, poznas lesneho muza?

    Thats Awesome!

  • humidity

  • lokidokie

  • Mil

As impressive as this is, there is obviously a point when the daily activations cease to increase. It would be impressive to get to 1M activations a day but that would mean that year would see at least 365M new Android devices. I suppose many of these could be existing Android users upgrading their devices but there will be a saturation point where these figures start to slow down.

  • donger

    thats a lot of phones.

  • raumgleiter

Doesn’t surprise me. Here in Thailand there was a BlackBerry craze. Then came the iphone craze. And now since about half year Android phones are all of a sudden the most popular phones at all carriers. I see the galaxy s2 just as much as iphone these days.

  • mr 1338

skyrocketing like never before and crushin iOS worldwide
i like the little andy :D
