Planning to attend CES? Come party with Android and Me

Planning to attend CES next month? If so, we have some exciting news to share. Android and Me would like to officially invite our readers and CES badge holders to join us at an exclusive private party SAY Media (an Android and Me partner) is throwing at the brand new nightclub 1Oak at The Mirage.

Unfortunately, I will not be at CES. A buddy of mine will be but he’s not an Android guy – he’s a WP7 guy. I hope everybody has a great time!!

    Honestly, I bet with the release of Win8 tablets, Windows Phones will start to be Android’s main competitor. Win8 tablets, imho, are going to potentially kill Android tablets unless Android can have some big wins in this area very soon. There are some good devices coming down but they need a big win. Think OG Droid type of win but on the tablet front. We simply haven’t had it yet. And while everybody talks about the iPad being the thing to beat, they’re wrong. It’s the next generation of tablets that can run all of the same software that you can run on your laptop and desktop. Imagine a Win8 tablet in an Asus Transformer package. At that point, your tablet IS a full-blown (not crippled) laptop. That’s HUGE!
    
    But as for WP7 devices themselves, in addition to the tablet situation that will be giving them a MAJOR boost (especially considering that with WP9, the same OS will run on the tablet and the phone), they’re really not that bad. Have you ever used one for an extended period of time? Microsoft gave me one but I gave it to my buddy who does WP7 development and his previous WP7 phone was an engineering model that was really crappy.
    
    But yeah, they’re REALLY not that bad. For a business phone where it’s critical that 1) you can talk and text, 2) email (it has the best Outlook integration of any phone, and that’s HUGE), 3) and surf, it’s actually a very good choice! Perhaps there are some missing enterprise features but I promise those will be there soonish (WP8?). For your Joe Schmoe consumer (NOT the people reading these blogs or participating in the forums we do. NOT the people who even think about or want to hack their devices.), they’re also a good device. They’re simple to use, they work well, they’re cheap, and they have solid specs (the ones that Joe Schmoe consumers care about). They may not have dual core processors, but frankly, most people don’t care. They may not have unlockable bootloaders, but most people don’t care. Again, for the people that shouldn’t be getting an Android phone (although with ICS, the size of that category has dropped a LOT) but want a smartphone, I would recommend them a WP7 over an iPhone because they’re easier to use and just all around better.
    
    Now don’t take this as me saying anybody here should run out and get a WP7. If you’re here, it’s not the right device for you. If you want to tweak your phone, it’s not for you. If you want to hack your phone, it’s not for you. If you want to theme your phone, it’s not for you. However, if you want it to “just work” and not have to work at it, then it’s a good phone. Personally, I want to be able to work at making my phone work better. With some work, my Android phone will be 100x better than I can make a WP7 phone. But that’s me – that’s not my mom, not my cousin, not my brother, etc. Again, though, ICS is MUCH closer to competing with the “it just works” aspect, though. So WP7 does have an uphill battle to climb.

Oh man, the year I decide not to go to CES you guys have a party. Parties were the whole reason I went to CES in the first place :).

You guys should make sure you go to the Tweet House party if they are doing another one this year. They were fun as hell that last two years. Last year I wore my reindeer mask and Andy Dick started groping my man boobs. No joke. That shit was awesome.
