HTC Edge suffering from identity crisis, gets two new names before MWC

htc-naming-endeavor-supreme-edge

We only have a few short weeks before HTC is expected to announce its 2012 lineup at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, but someone thought it would be funny to introduce a few new code names into our vocabulary just to keep us on our toes. According to PocketNow, the HTC Edge should now be referred to as the HTC Endeavor. But if you’re not too fond of that name, you could always call it the HTC Supreme, which is expected to be the handset’s real name once it is unveiled and hits store shelves. Of course, don’t expect that name make it to the US market since our service providers love to muck things up by completely ditching HTC’s naming conventions.

To recap, we’re expecting HTC to announce a quad-core Tegra 3 powered handset at Mobile World Congress that will probably be named the Edge, Endeavor or Supreme. Personally, I’d name the phone the HTC Edge since the Endeavor is a bit vague and Supreme would certainly leave me disappointed once HTC launches its fall lineup, which will most likely include something named the Supreme XE or XL. What do you think HTC’s Tegra 3 powered phone should be named?

I’d say the name is getting better each time, but it’s most likely just a code name

Lol, what’s in a name? Isn’t a rose just as sweet if called by another name? Nah, seriously… I think this whole name issue has gotten out of hand. None of the devices ever truely live up to the name given to them. Edge makes me think of TMO’s 2G so if this device was given to them I would already be disappointed…

Whatever happened to that “naming app” that was “trendy” for a moment… :-\

Seriously though, I’m very interested in seeing what HTC has been working on, a tegra 3 powered HTC device sounds great to me. If it comes to T-Mobile I might have to redact all of my previous statements about leaving for big red XP

    I wouldn’t mind having a tegra 3 HTC phone.

Who cares if HTC is makin a quad core phone. they got dual core phones that can’t run most apps on the market. What we need to tell these phone company to do is make one Damn phone that would last for two year. Rather than keep putting out phones every 3mo. I love android and everything they do, but I really think android will die in the next 3 to 5 years if they don’t do something about this problem. I want too see less phone this year. To ne they need to force more on dual core phones than on trying to bring something else out that not going to work with the market. We already have 4.0 and really no apps for that. So please please slow down you killing yourself.

    • delinear

My HTC Desire served me well for two years. Admittedly I wasn’t playing games on it,but for everything else it served me well (I was in two minds whether to just keep using it in fact).

Hopefully my Galaxy Nexus will serve me well for two years too (and as for ICS I love it, there are a small number of apps that it’s missing that I was used to under 2.3 but they’re being updated, this was a big revision so is bound to take a little time).

The beauty of Android is that there’s a handset for everyone, but of course that means some users might consider some phones to be underpowered.

Phone manufacturers are flooding the market with too many phones. They really need to slow it down to a phone a year. We all bash on Apple but at least their model is consistent with a phone a year albeit their improvements aren’t huge but if Android manufacturers did something like that. I bet we would see huge improvements.

    • honourbound68

Nod. Too many variants – all with slightly differing specs/components that all require different os upgrades. Maybe the manufacturers should look into just making 3 phones (low-mid-hi end) and support the heck out of them. Maybe then they’d have better products, better customer satisfaction and brand loyalty.

      • http://htcsource.com Nick Gray

I agree. Having just one phone would be a bit silly, but they could get by with a handful of different phones for different demographics. That way people don’t get pissed when a new phone comes out since it wouldn’t fit their needs.

  • yankeesusa

So what company is this phone supposed to be with? Is htc gonna make anymore phones for sprint before they activate their new lte network? I actually would not have minded a nice quadcore 3g windows phone 7 handset for sprint but sprint said they aren’t going to be doing any windows phones for a while. I guess we;ll have to wait for couple more months and news on their lte network.

    • http://htcsource.com Nick Gray

I talked to a few Sprint reps at CES at their party and they said that their focus for new phones in completely on LTE. All new high-end smartphones will have LTE capabilities and we should no longer see any new WiMax phones hit the market.

  • RollTide1

Delinear, I agree with you. I squeezed two years out of a droid Eris so when I got my GNEX it was like going from a rock and chisel to a laser printer. I just hope the GNEX is still a little bit relevant two years from now…but I doubt it will be if VZW stick to their usual patterns.

    • http://htcsource.com Nick Gray

I think if people stick with a phone for two whole years, upgrading to something new is amazing. I applaud you for sticking with the Eris for so long especially considering that the hardware was over a year old at the time. Enjoy your GNEX!

I don’t care as long as it comes to T-mobile, but I would say HTC Icy Beats

  • Mike C

I really wish they would make a version without all the Sense stuff. A phone with just Android 4.0 and nothing else. Something comparable to the Galaxy Nexus – just not in the usual Samsung plastic feel.

Please HTC … you could call it HTC Supreme Raw …

    • http://htcsource.com Nick Gray

We could see something like that from T-Mobile. The G1, G2 and G2X were all stock Android phones. The LG made G2X was a bit of a disappointment for manyt, so T-Mobile might go back to HTC and order up another stock Android powered phone.

    • trob6969

I don’t see the big deal with all this ‘pure’ android talk. I have an htc rezound with sense 3.5 and i like everything about it. From what i’ve seen ics looks pretty bland in comparison.

      • jess

Agreed, I have the sensation. I have never had a problem with sense but when I saw 4.0 I thought I wish HTC would release the update without sense. That was until (my phone is rooted) I flashed the leaked 4.0 rom with sense 3.6 until I found a fully functional 4.0 aosp rom and flashed that (the main reason I rooted my phone was to get android 4.0 without sense). I went back to the sense rom in like 20 min, not because there was a problem with the rom but so many sense features including the calendar I just like way better. The only thing I really liked better in aosp was the way the dialer looked, the blue and black looks nice.

I love htc always have but they need to step their game up major. 4.0 android is the move nothing is better. Time for htc to send current devices 4.0 updates we are waiting…

    • http://htcsource.com Nick Gray

Just relax. Android 4.0 is coming, but don’t expect to see anyone push out the update until after the dust has settled from Mobile World Congress. I know it’s a horrible thing to do, but OEMs want to show the world what the next best thing is before they start giving current customers new software which will make their phones last another year or so.

Last year, HTC didn’t start pushing out Gingerbread updates until April.

      • DROID Sam

just because that’s what they’ve done in the past doesn’t mean it’ll happen again. The leaked builds have been coming on a steady basis and they started showing up a lot earlier this time. My money’s on a mid-February CIS update for the international Sensation family.

        • squiddy20

US releases are generally slower than international releases of the same exact product due to carriers wanting to put their own crap on the phones and do their own “testing”. Official ICS releases for anything other than Nexus phones and phones over in the EU and such, won’t be seen for several more months.
