Top Android game developer OMGPop acquired by Zynga

draw-something-630

We haven’t discussed it much on this site, but Draw Something from OMGPop has quickly become the number one Android app. It was only released six weeks ago and it already claims the Top Free, Top Paid, and Top Grossing app in the Google Play Store. Gaming giant Zynga took notice of the meteoric rise and today they announced they had acquired OMGPop, for a reported price of $210 million.

To get an idea of the popularity of Draw Something, check out these stats from Henry Blodget of Business Insider. Draw something has been downloaded over 35 million times, it averages 12 million daily users, and generates $250,000 of revenue per day. David Ko, CMO of Zynga, shared that every second three thousand people draw something in 84 countries throughout the world.

Our very own Clark and Angie have been playing this game a lot, but I haven’t even installed it yet. Now that OMGPop just sold for over $200 million, I guess it’s time to go see what all the hype is about.

Been playing this game and I have to admit it is pretty fun! I’ve always thought it was made from Zynga anyway (layout, colour, ala Words with Friends)

I have played it a few times but i honestly think it could use some updating.

Kudos to OMGPop for the acquisition; I too thought it was by Zynga at first (which is why, when it kept timing out and freezing for me, I was not surprised), but now that it’s Zynga-official, I expect the game to both explode even further in popularity and find its way all over my stream and filled with ads.

Ditto. At least it might get a half-assed polling based notification system.

Hopefully Zynga doesn’t screw everyone over and start charging to buy more words and colors.

    • thiskid

The game already does this. You can either play more to win coins or pay for instant coins.

It already costs bombs/points whatever to get new words, eliminate letters, get new colors, etc. And you can purchase bombs with points and you can buy them as well. So they’re already trying to upsell you with in-game-purchases.

I love the game, just wish there was a point to it, you basically continue playing/drawing forever, even when you lose, the game continues, I already thought this game belong to zynga before I started playing so congrats to omgpop.

Well OMGPop was doing a pretty good job updating over the past 6 weeks. This game has exploded and they fixed some serious server issues, made the game run better, added some new much needed features and it looked like they’d keep a good update schedule and keep working on the game. Now that Zynga has bought it I’m pretty sure it will be un-updated for years and drain battery even more on Android. That’s too bad, but really happy for OMGPop as that’s a nice payout!

    wow at the daily revenue

I already have majority of their apps installed in my phone and with this new purchase…i can only expect to see where this purchase gonna take us…Personally I like Zygna games and how they function

  • Chaoz

Wow. Who said that the game needs to be super advanced or fancy in order to make money.

this game is addicting…. i now play this rather than scramble / words / hanging… so if you like add me.. im at jeffahsam@gmail.com…. just im a very crappy artist.. LOL

  • Burnd

Haha, I’m actually playing this game right now. WordFued was just losing its popularity and OMGPOP just made a nice game at the right time. The browser game they had for years was fun as well, but I think it wasn’t even 1% as successful as this app. They’re really lucky receiving such amount of money. :]

    Great Company OMGPOP..they deserved it..
I really think they sold for much less..
The world would be a batter place if there are more entrepreneurs..not less :-(
