Shot Control wins week 4 of #thenextinstall, 10 new apps try to knock it down

shot-control-thenextinstall

Can our community help discover the next great Android app? Welcome to a new experiment called #thenextinstall where we try to see if we can find an Android app in the rough, and boost its installs and exposure to new highs.

Carrier Coverage daily installs.

Last week our community selected Carrier Coverage, an app that attempts to answer the question ‘Which carrier is best for you?’, which is a pretty ambitious project. We thought it was a cool concept, but the developer might have a hard time finding success. The app hasn’t been updated since February and we discovered there are competing apps like Sensorly that have better reviews and a larger following. Not all our picks will turn into winners, but at least we helped boost Carrier Coverage’s daily installs to new highs.

Week 4 Winner: Shot Control

This week was a very close call, but Shot Control by StarvingMind came out on top as our weekly winner. Our audience has a thing for camera apps, and Shot Control is one of the most details camera apps to come around in awhile. It was designed to help serious photographers take better photographs.

If you prefer to just point and shoot pics and know nothing about photography, then this app might not be for you. However, if you love to play with all your camera settings to get that perfect shot, then Shot Control is easily worth the $1.99 asking price.

Most customers who have reviewed the app have all praised the developer. Comments include, “Dev seems to very proactive in wanting to make this app stand head and shoulders above else”, “The developer responded to my email within minutes”, “The developer is excellent about responding to issues and questions”, and “He is clearly committed to making this the most flat-out functional camera app on the market. Get it!”

I went ahead and purchased the app just to support the developer, but I haven’t had much time this week to play around with it. Now that it’s on all my devices, I’m sure I’ll be spending some more time with it soon.

Key features include:

  • Multiple Touch Focus/Meter regions on ICS (on supported devices with Android 4.0)
  • Direct access to exposure control and zoom
  • One tap access to ISO, White Balance, Scene Modes, Focus Modes, and Flash Mode Settings (based on device abilities)
  • Custom mapping for hardware buttons (like volume down for focus, volume up for shutter)
  • Pre-focus function
  • 35mm style film roll integrated with the viewfinder display
  • Star your favorite photos, which will be added to their own “Stars – Shot Control” group in the stock gallery app on most phones.
  • With “Instant Upload” enabled in Google+, photos with stars will be “instant uploaded” to G+/Picasa as if they were taken with the stock camera app.

I’ve had schemer for a couple weeks and never touched it. Lots of people keep adding me as a friend. Maybe I need to spend more time with it.

I have used schemer. Remember trying to get an invite from all over the web. It’s a very good idea and can really help you find company when you want to do something or to just do something. Diet, exercise, learn a new language! (Made by ex-Google employees ;) )

Thank you for your coverage of Shot Control. The users here have pushed the app past the 1k install tier, provided awesome feedback, and have been great to work with.

My ambition is to make Shot Control the best camera app for experienced photographers.

If anyone is concerned about the price, I’m always willing to issue a refund, for any reason, at any time. I may have a demo version at some point in the future, but right now I know the development and support of a demo version would distract from the time I can devote to the core functionality of the app…this is a part time project for me, and like many small devs, I have a day job.

Thank you all for the support, coverage, bug reports, and app feedback.

I must add, (and it seems I can’t edit my prior comment…)

I can’t thank you all enough for all the 5 star reviews for Shot Control. They mean so much to me, and help tremendously in the long term success of a new app like Shot Control.

Think I just fell in love love with solid explorer, this thing is so beautiful, never thought I’d ever come a explorer that made me wanna reconsider using ES as my default.

I am installing right now based on looks. This may replace Astro for me. It seems like it’s well done.

Been using solid explorer for almost 3 weeks now. Its the best file explorer ived ever used.

Wow, some really stiff competition this week. You guys really outdid yourselves on the app selection this week.

I just started using Solid Explorer Beta a few days ago, and it is great. I especially love the detailed breakdown of folder contents (size, apps, file types, and more).

I’ve been using Smart Statusbar for a few weeks now, and it is invaluable for just checking the time or accessing your notifications and notification controls while in a full-screen app.

Wow! Looks like people are substituting their cameras wit their phones! I have seen camera apps win #thenextinstall time and again!
I do have 5 camera apps on my phone (pano, camera zoom FX, Paper camera, after focus & Pixlr-o-matic) but for some reason dont see myself using my camera very so often. I wonder why?

Shot Control is awesome! I also like the expanded edit features in PicShop. So far I’m a big fan of Solid Explorer. I uninstalled Logitype within 5 minutes because it was either that or throw my prime off my 17th floor balcony. Thumb Keyboard is SO much better it’s not even close. Just started playing with Schemer but don’t think I’ll have much of an opinion for at least a week of exploring.

I LOVE PicShop. It is the closest thing I’ve found to having a mini Photoshop on my phone. Yes, even better than Photoshop for Android. Great developer, nice price. Seriously, try it out.

Best app out there right now is called Stick It. It’s free and it gives you picture in picture like the up coming galaxy S3.
