Official Motorola Android 4.0 update list – May

It’s been a few months since we last checked in with the official Android 4.0 update list for Motorola, and in light of recent changes to that list (as well as comments from Motorola on the Android 4.0 update, which we will get to in a moment) it seemed like a good time for a status update.

Will my device be updated?

Motorola has perhaps been the most candid and comprehensive of the major manufacturers when it comes to their Android upgrade process. They outlined their 4-step updating process for everyone back in December and have pretty dutifully maintained the device update page found in their forums.

Unfortunately this has not translated into being the most expedient in actually delivering upgrades to their customers’ devices. To date, the only device that has received its update to Android 4.0 is the WiFi-only XOOM (and only the versions in the US or Canada at that). All other devices remain in either the Development, Evaluation & Planning or Testing phases.

Now, as previously mentioned, there was a blog post from Motorola in the last few days which was designed to make clear why some devices won’t be getting Android 4.0.

You may be wondering why all devices aren’t being upgraded to Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich). Here’s the deal. We work very closely with Google and cell phone carriers for every software update. And, obviously we want the new release to improve our devices. If we determine that can’t be done—well then, we’re not able to upgrade that particular device.Motorola

I know that statement has some people riled up and it’s always irritating to hear that your device won’t be upgraded, but I think it’s a fairly reasonable position. Now, if they start pulling the update plug on popular devices that have the specs to support the next OS, then I’ll pick up a torch and join the angry villagers.

01/18/12 - US Motorola XOOM WiFi-only tablets receive Android 4.0 update
Becoming the first Motorola device with Android 4.0, the US XOOM WiFi-only tablet started receiving its delicious update during January. It is a bit simpler for Motorola to do this, as it has no UI overlay, and the manufacturer does not have to go through a carrier to get the updates out.
12/07/11 - Motorola details their 4-step updating process
Soon after Google released the source code for Android 4.0, Motorola decided to go ahead and let us know how things work (on their side). This explains why updates can take a good amount of time before reaching the consumer, and is a great way to get an idea of how they make it to your devices.
10/24/11 - Motorola promises Android 4.0 updates to be released 6 weeks after Google’s release
Aiming a bit too high, Motorola promises that updates would start being rolled out 6 weeks after Google releases the Android 4.0 OS. Most devices still haven’t received the update, and won’t for a while, so it is evident that Motorola was overestimating its abilities.

Knowing I’ll (hopefully) receive my ICS upgrade by the end of next month, coupled with the fact that Verizon says the next update will unlock the global GSM radios in it, make me look forward to my plans of traveling abroad with my own phone and only having to buy a prepaid SIM card once I’m overseas. =)

  Quite a few devices slipped back a quarter for their update rollout. It does seem a bit surprising considering they haven’t exactly been busy launching new devices, but on the bright side the update is still coming.

I really feel bad for all the Droid 3 and Droid X2 owners out there. I think they bought a phone that they believed would be upgraded in the future, but they are really being left out in the cold.

I also can’t believe that Moto hasn’t upgraded any phones to ICS yet. What happened to 6 weeks after ICS was delivered???

Even though my Verizon Galaxy Nexus hasn’t hadn’t update yet (hopefully 4.0.4 tomorrow), that is nothing compared to the folks that bough a RAZR variant.

Hopefully, the turnaround time on upgrades for Moto hardware improves once Google seals the deal on the purchase.

Man I loved Motorola back in the day. I had all the Moto Nextels in the span of 5 years and before that I rocked the Motorola StarTAC and Talkabout for a good while. Kinda Glad I went with HTC and Samsung when Android hit the market. Never liked the DROID Series for some reason. maybe now that Google bought Moto I can get back on the bandwagon.

It’s taking Moto up to a year from release (Nov-Dec 2011) of ICS to get it on their devices? 8 months for many devices like the Atrix 2? Geez Moto, y’all need to hurry it up.

This pretty much puts the nail in the coffin for me with Android phones. So maybe the Photon didn’t sell well, but I’ve been happy with it. So a reasonable mind would ask, if I’ve been happy why am I getting upset? To be honest, it doesn’t even boil down to wanting the latest and greatest or a certain feature, it’s about customer service. It’s about standing behind your product. It’s not just the manufacturers or just the telecoms. It’s both of them being so focused on coming up with a device to beat the iPhone that they forget they need customers to buy them.
I just need Sprint to come out with a good windows phone and it’s over.

I wish with google’s acquisition we would be getting the vanilla Android instead of the blur but unfortunately we won’t. That’s assuming motorola can send the upgrades. They were expecting first half and GB took 7+ months to get to Atrix. Now they are projecting Q3 so I think that means it will be coming towards the end of the year with the expected extra delays. By then I will be ready to buy a new phone anyway. And unless google starts producing one high-end device with vanilla android and nexus like upgrades it won’t be motorola.

I have a XOOM WiFi only, purchased new August 2011 through Amazon. Still V3.2 with the following Firmware: GAS_NA_HUBBLEWIFICANADA_P009. I check at least twice a day and only get the message: “Your device is up to date!”

Any chance I will ever get ICS? Who can I contact to determine why I can’t get the upgrade? I get updates to all my apps on the Xoom.

My last electronics purchase from Amazon. I live in the U.S. and thought Amazon would be a reliable supplier of U.S. products. Guess I was wrong.

My 2cents. I love my Atrix 4g. I purchased as soon as it was released (even got the crazy expensive lapdock). The phone was a little bit buggy when I first got it – but not terrible. I like the webtop – but I don’t love it. It was poorly executed. I’m hoping the new webtop in ICS (basically tablet view) will be better as it will allow access to all the apps that we’ve come to love – the only concern is that the controls might be hodgy podgy since it will be mouse/keyboard driven versus touch. As for the wait – 6-8 months to develop, test and deploy the updated OS is in my opinion a fair turn around time for such a massive update. So even if it is the end of Q3 – I’m okay waiting.
