Motorola rumored to reveal phone with edge-to-edge screen, sans-bezel

motorola-droid-razr-hd-vid

Motorola has scheduled two press events this month and Bloomberg is reporting that one of the devices will feature an “edge-to-edge screen.” Both of the invites sent out to media hinted at a new display, so this latest reports sounds plausible.

On September 5th Motorola will hold an event with Verizon in New York. The invite said “Motorola. On Display” and we were expecting to see the Droid RAZR HD and Droid RAZR M. After that Motorola has an event with Intel on September 18th. The invite for the second event said “Let us take you to the edge.”

Bloomberg says the edge-to-edge display should come this week in New York, but we think the 2nd event in London is a more likely target. We have already seen the RAZR HD leak out several times, and the display has a bezel on all edges. Motorola’s first smartphone with an Intel processor is a little more mysterious, and no pictures have surfaced so far.

Either way, it is pretty exciting to hear that Motorola will “do away with the little bits of screen that aren’t screen.” Their Intel-powered device could also be the fastest Android phone we have ever seen if it uses the new dual-core 1.8 GHz Atom Z2580 chip with PowerVR SGX 544MP2 GPU and integrated LTE.

These devices will be Motorola’s first products since they were acquired by Google, so it will be interesting to see what changes were made, if any. Hopefully Google persuaded them to bury Motoblur and stick with the stock Android experience.

What do you hope Motorola will announce over the next couple of weeks?

Hopefully motoblur has gone by the way side. A pure Google experience will be welcome with an open palm. Also I hope edge to edge means 5″+ screen size.

    • vforvortex

if screen is edge to edge, then a 5 inch screen would probably fit the same as a phone with bezel that is only 4.3 i would guess. Plus since i have big hands, i could handle a 5inch screen. But some people dont like the phone/tablet sizes.

My phones so far have only been the HTC’s; G1 and the Htc Sensation. If this phone will be released as a nexus device, I want it!

  • renyo

Oh wow… I used to touch the screen accidentally when holding the Desire HD… Now it seems it might become a bit more problematic if newer phones offered edge to edge bezels…

    • Oreo

I was just thinking the same exact thing. The inside of my palm always touch’s something on the bottom right of my screen of the GS3. Sigh.

    • dcds

      Lol you’re holding it wrong!

      Just j/k ;-)

  • apay

I’ll have to wait until i buy a GSIII.
Anyway, i hope they will make a pure stock rom.

  • redraider133

This could make a great nexus device. They could advertise it as the first of its kind with the edge to edge display.

    • Jon Garrett

lol, then sit back and wait for apple to sue.

      • zerosix

The problem about apple is that you should always wait for their lawyers.

  • Mil

Yeah, yeah…the same rumour did the rounds for the S3 prior to its official announcement and obviously that turned out to be a load of rubbish. I reckon this’ll be the same.

    • impulse101

I reckon you are a moron since they sent out invites pretting much spelling it out for you that they are releasing and edge to edge screen.

  • Vance

A small bezel is useful for a protective case and your hand. I don’t see the benefit of eliminating it completely.

    • SimonSays

Yeah, they would have to disable touch for the outer parts of the display to prevent accidental clicks from just holding your phone. (This creating an “invisible” bezel)

Edge-to-edge monitors seem a little silly for phones.

    • Tangent

Exactly what I was thinking. I love the aesthetics of a full edge-to-edge screen, but I worry about the durability… I’ve dropped my Sensation onto hard surfaces several times and the aluminum bezel has taken the brunt of the impact, just leaving a tiny nick. I suspect this phone will be seen with a shattered screen as much as the iPhone with it’s edge-to-edge glass…

  • WlfHart

This could be awesome as long as they don’t have sensor issues with hand placement on the sides of the device.

I would be interested in this. I wish Moto would step outside of the “Droid” box and make a killer phone for all arriers

A powervr gpu is a big deal since Apple also uses it and beats tegra 3 and even qualcomm’s latest gpu. But Intel may be an even bigger deal since Intel tends to dominate once it gets its act together.

Ever since Google TV I have vowed to never buy Android+Intel again, but no bezel might make me think again!

    • http://theandroidappshow.com Lane

Who is downvoting me? Are there actually people who think the Google TV experience on Intel is good?

We own 2 GNex’s, a rooted Kindle Fire, an Acer A100, and a Nexus 7 and the Logitech Revue just falls short compared to every other device I’ve owned including the G1.

      • zerosix

Unfortunately, some people don’t read the whole message, just the words “never buy Android”.
        Gave you 2 thumbs up.

This would be the perfect way to have the nice, large displays of smartphones these days without having to deal with the bulk.

  • johny_ale

wow…hope to see one soon :)

Looks like a brick compared to galaxy note 2

  • elegantgabe

Nice. This way they could use a big display in a small device. I really dislike big smartphones like the Galaxy SIII. I mean they are just too big to carry them in my trouser pocket.

I would hope for Jelly Bean above all and custom UI free, hopefully with Mota choosing to offer apps and widgets instead of Motorblur and the facility in Jelly Bean to effectively turn off any unwanted app/widget.

That aside, great battery life and a more conventional shape would also be appreciated

  • aburgthing

I think the most interesting part of this announcement and/or the subsequent release will be how locked down this beast will be. Verizon + Motorola has been pretty effective in locking down their devices. Now that Google is Motorola it will be interesting indeed to see what tact they will employ towards the development community. Will it be locked in the beginning with an unlock available or hopelessly locked forever? Speaking of which, I wonder how the Intel processor will challenge the developers period?

  • Nathan D.

Can’t wait and see what they will show.

  • Michael

What I hope to see in the next few weeks is hopefully Ice Cream Sandwich on my Motorola Droid Bionic. Hopefully..

    • LuckyHermit

Hahahahah ha ha hah harde har har….

      Oh, I mean.. Yeah maybe!

  • DroidPower

can’t wait to see it. and i wonder if this will make it harder for the case manufacturers

  • aranea

Hmm. Can this be a surprise nexus device. After motorola failing to update my atrix I said I won’t buy a motorola but if it’s a nexus device that will be upgraded by google then I may.

PS. Motorola should patent this “form factor” or else apple will steal and claim they are the first to do it

  • Smart_Chick

Why the picture of a very NOT edge-to-edge phone?
There ARE small bezels on the left and right edges.
And HUGE bezels on the top and bottom edges.

That’s an “edge to edge” screen????

    • davisbs999

Calm down. Apparently you do do not understand the plainly stated fact that “no pictures have surfaced so far” . And this being the first phone with an edge-to-edge screen, what picture do you propose that the editor post?

  • Max.Steel

Let us all be realistic for a moment. As exciting as this is, this is Motorola we are talking about here so it will more than likely be exclusive to Verizon like every other Droid phone they make.

  • ibap

If an “edge-to-edge” display makes it more susceptible to damage, I’m not sure it is a big plus. I’m more interested in the processor guts and the Nexus concept. But if it goes to Verizon, it will be Nexus in name only.

  • RobBull75

This looks like it could be pretty close to stock JellyBean with a few ugly Moto icons. Hopefully, Motorola is going with a less is more approach with MotoBlur.
