Google Fiber to make first major expansion

Google Fiber TV

Residents of Kansas City will no longer be the only ones to enjoy Google’s Gigabit Internet service, Google Fiber. In a post on the official Google Fiber blog, community manager Rachel Hack has announced that Google Fiber is coming to Olathe, Kansas.

Adding to what Hack is calling the “Silicon Prairie,” Olathe will be the first major area outside of Kansas City to see Google Fiber. While the actual construction and engineering of the network will take some time to complete, Olathe City Council members have already approved the expansion.

Today’s news doesn’t necessarily mean you should be expecting Google Fiber to pop up in your neighborhood any day now, but it does mean that Google is committed to making Fiber work. Hack closed out her post on the expansion by saying, “Hopefully, this is the first of several announcements that we’ll be able to make about bringing Google Fiber to additional cities in the KC metro area; so stay tuned.” We most certainly will.

From Kansas City to a suburb of Kansas City in about 6 months. I’m not going to start holding my breath for it to make it the 500 miles north to me.

New York City should have it by the time I get social security. Who am I kidding? I’m 27. There won’t be a social security then!

I live in Olathe, KS and I am very excited about this. I will most likely be “that guy” in the neighborhood handing out flyers and telling people to visit the site to learn more.

I used to live in Olathe couple of years ago. Probably a good idea to move back now. I’ll definitely be telling brother who still lives in Olathe.

I can’t wait for this to reach the Boston market! It would blow Comcast / RCN / FiOS out of the water!
