Google, ASUS set to announce next Nexus 7 at Google I/O

Google-Nexus-7-with-HSPA+radio

We’ve been hearing faint whispers that a new Nexus 7 will be announced at Google I/O this year. Until today, details surrounding the device had been surprisingly scarce, especially considering that Google I/O is almost upon us. Word is now in from KGI securities analyst Mingchi Kuo that Google and ASUS will be teaming up to announce a new Nexus 7 next week.

According to Mingchi Kuo, Google I/O will indeed be the venue for the unveiling of the next Nexus 7, set to be released in June or July for $199. We’ve heard previous rumors that the next Nexus 7 will come from ASUS and feature a spec bump in nearly every area; if Kuo is right, that’s exactly what we’re looking at.

Kuo has detailed the new Nexus 7 as coming with a 7-inch LTPS 1920 x 1200 display, a Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro (much like the one found in the Nexus 4), Qi wireless charging, a 5-megapixel rear camera, an HD front-facing camera, NFC, a 4,000mAh battery and Android 4.3.

Normally, we wouldn’t take anything an analyst says to heart, but Kuo is considered well-connected and has been right on several rumor reports in the past. There’s a good chance what you hear today will come true. If that is the case, what do you think of the upcoming Nexus 7 refresh?

Time to sell my I/O Nexus 7 from last year.

    • Dustin Earley

      The pretty white one?

      • tommydaniel

        Yes sir.

        • Dustin Earley

Always loved the look of that tablet.

  • Qbancelli

    It’s mine!

Start working at home with Google! It’s by-far the best job Ive had. Last Tuesday I bought a gorgeous Lancia Straton from earning $4331 this — 5 weeks past. I began this 7 months ago and right away started to earn at least $69, per-hr. I use this website,, http://qr.net/Jobs100

  • Jimmy_Jo

I’m waiting for that Nexus 4+…. I’m dying to get that and switch to the UNcarrier

    • tommydaniel

The most you are going to get is a 32GB Nexus 4.

  • peekay5000

makes me happy that i waited so long to get a nexus7.

  • hideous_strength

Love it. Hoping for a smaller bezel as well.

Glad to hear there is a new Nexus coming. I convinced my wife for the past two months that its coming and she’d have killed me if there wasn’t a new one and I made her live tablet deprived.

  • acuda27

Never time I go to SAMS Club I am really tempted to get one but I was hoping the new one would have a rear camera for photosphere. I was so close to getting one for my mom for Mother’s Day but might have to hold off.

    • acuda27

Every Time -_- can’t wait to get rid of this iPad……I’m preordering that thing as soon as it goes live!

As an owner of the N7 from the original distribution, I’ve been very satisfied with performance, battery life and build quality from ASUS. For potential buyers of the next gen N7, I’d say you’re in good hands with ASUS again.

    • ALee

Agreed. I dropped my N7 in the parking lot one day. It popped out of the case that I had at the time and skidded glass-side down across the pavement about 5ft under the next car. It almost seemed to happen in slow motion, while I yelled a barrage of obscenities. I was sure that it was either broken or at least scratched to hell…

There was not one scratch on the glass.

The silver plastic rim was a little dinged, but that is nothing a little touch up paint could not fix. The N7 is a solid device. I will buy ASUS for all of my tablets going forward.

I dropped my Transformer Prime in the bathroom once and it dented a corner. Still worked fine, but now it won’t charge (totally unrelated to the fall because that was way back before I had charging problems). Need to send it back but this doesn’t make me not want to support them. Still love their products.

    • MC_Android

Haha as an owner of the Transformer Prime, 2 Nexus 7′s (original production and refreshed 32gb), I would say Asus products’ quality is hit or miss for an entire line. You might have gotten a good unit but check online for countless complaints of horrible build for the N7. Transformer prime and infinity is the same deal. Wifi and GPS issues for the prime and i/o issues for both after jellybean update which has yet to be resolved. Asus has been known to make the device worse than before after send it back or you swap problems. My prime was actually unusable after getting “repaired”.

Now take into account of the fact that it is a Nexus device, you’re going to have a horrible launch shortage until the device is 3 months old.

I’m skeptical on the quality and distribution of this tablet. As hopeful as I want to be, I owned enough Asus devices to know jump the gun on this.

    • ArticulateFool

Other than the speakers that are prone to blowing.

I would love if they put better quality speakers in the next rendition.

  • Sean

So my Mom finally gets an iPad :)
I hope they will start selling right after I/O.

  • swauger

I will be buying one as soon as they go on sale and giving my old Nexus 7 to my wife. That sounds rude, but an old Nexus 7 is better than her Nook Color.

  • renyo

    Why not snapdragon 600?

    • slimx30

the SD 600 just got released, and I am guessing that would drive the price of the tablet to go up

    • stucrmnx120fshwf

Or even a snappy 800, those ultra definition background graphics capabilities, would keep it cool at 1080p.

  • rauelius

Please please PLEASE….release ONLY 32GB($200) and 64GB($250) and LTE-64GB($300) versions. As the Galaxy S4 proved 16GB(8GB) is NOT enough room for Apps that would actually take advantage of the hardware….not to mention SD-Cards have sat their pointlessly on most phones as games can only exist in the 2GB System Partition or the 6GB storage partition. The SD-Card is good for nothing (for me at least) as I upload pictures to the cloud and stream music with Google Music.

    • redraider133

the galaxy s4 isn’t stock android though, so the nexus 7 will have more space since it wont be loaded with all the bloat of a custom skin.

    • Chris

I think what you really need is for more apps to take advantage of having an SD Card installed. Also, if you are running out of space so quickly… that means you probably have downloaded too much junk and need to learn self control.

  • slimx30

definitely getting one of these. I hope they don’t have any supply issues like the nexus 4 had

  • Nathan D.

    Sound good to me :-)

  • jamal adam

My only question would be why a Snapdragon S4 Pro instead of the newer more powerful 600, otherwise, this is looking like quite the upgrade from the original.

    • http://www.infotainmentempire.com pekosROB

To make it cheaper/stay with the original pricing.

  • aranea

Are they updating nexus 10 too?

    • Raptor

      Bezelless 4k screen. A4 journal size. Tegra4

    • stucrmnx120fshwf

A Nexus UD (4k,) is indeed possible, we’ve seen that Teg 4, Snappy 800 are UD capable, the exonos 5 on N10 is only dual core instead of octo core, as in S4, Note 3, we’ve seen lots of smartphone resolution doubling. If Sammy isn’t first with UD, they’ll be fuming, even just a processor upgrade would be good, the more and faster RAM, flash the better.

  • Galen20K

I’m so there. Passed on the first Nexus 7 due to it’s “just alright” screen, and if this remedy’s that this is an instant buy for myself.

  • HeadDoc

I’ve been holding out on buying a tablet, because it felt like I would mainly use it as a toy (gotta love those free Play Store games). But, ever since my office decided to use a unified Google Calendar to schedule office space, I have been waiting for this very device. The only competition is a rumored Galaxy Tab with an 8-inch screen…

    • Allan in N. Calif.

It’s not a rumor–I examined a Galaxy Tab 8 at a Staples today. It had a white case, and was impossibly light and THIN. I’m a staunch notebook guy, but I have to admit, it was awfully appealing. The $400 price tag was the only thing keeping me from walking out with it.

Last year Google released the Nexus 7 a little over 2 weeks after IO. If they waited a month and a half after the conference to release the next N7 and Android 4.3 I would die in anticipation. So they better release it in late May or early June or they’ll be murderers

At this point I’m not even that concerned about the CPU, memory, etc. specs. I am much more excited about the prospect of picking up a 7-inch 1920×1200 resolution tablet for $200. If that much is true I think it is finally time for me to get one. I was just looking a couple weeks ago and almost bought the current Nexus 7, then considered buying a used one on Craigslist. Then I realized that I/O was right around the corner and now we are getting some pretty fun sound rumors of the new device.

Im also really hoping we see a new phone, hopefully the X Phone, but who knows. I really need to get rid of my Nexus S.

Actually, I felt deprived because I couldn’t afford a Nex 4, sorry life on struggle street has treated y,all so bad cousin. But at least we’ve got the dosh this time around.

        • stucrmnx120fshwf

Have faith bro, things’ll get better, when they saw I was getting bashed and ripped off by the criminally insane, in the boarding house, they gave me a 2 bedroom townhouse among the over 50s. It’s folks like you, that make me give $20 a month to save the children, soldier on regardless, don’t let’em get you down, a bit of comedy noir, sometimes helps. But I know how hard it can be, as a cold war mutant from atomic testing, good luck, it’s difficult being behind the eight ball, but it is wonderful that even poor wretches like you and I, can have a window on the world in high definition. There’s an old expression “Life was not meant to be easy, but have faith child, for it can be sublime,” which I think is apt, anyway just sharpening my retoric, for the debate that is life. Hey if you kept on reading after the first comments, I don’t remember forcing anyone to read, the free market of ideas is an almost magical thing, wonder if I’ll get replies from vicious, spiteful, bile spewing, venom merchants. If you’re asking your self why I wrote like this, think Sheldon from the Big Bang Theory-autism (aspergers, high functioning autistic,) I have rambled on today, but what else am I going to do with arthritis and accelerated decrepitude, might techno babble on. I hear the new Xbox like PS4 has 8 cores, 8 GB GDDR5, and 8 series AMD graphics, allowing it to crank out a trillion floating point operations per second, a trill for a triple 8. If we went from 480p to Nexus 10 in 30 months, then at that rate of progress, by the Christmas buying season 2015, we might have 6″ 3D UD devices and then 4 billion similar devices in 2018. Ah the dreams of mice and men, when we assume, we make an ass out of you and me, would be nice to see all those poor folk, emersed into the rest of the world. Hope y’all found it amusing.

      • NamelessTed

It isn’t necessarily that I am poor, but I make bad decisions. I end up in this cycle of constantly waiting for the “perfect” phone because I don’t want to waste money on something that I am not going to like. I just wiped my phone and updated to CM 10.1 RC2 so that has made a HUGE difference in performance.

The Nexus S has been a great device, don’t get me wrong. It is just REALLY starting to show its age.

    • Bupkus

I have the original N7 and with almost 100 .pdf file/books installed; I’m hovering at about .8GB free space.
I like to download movies but with such a small screen and pixel density I don’t see why I should fill up all my memory with a movie resolution I can’t appreciate.
I just don’t see where the upgrade would really benefit me.

  • Zifh

The thing is, there’s also the rumor that it will support wifi ac..but the s4 pro doesn’t !
Does that mean it will have a s600 ? Let’s hope and see..

  • BennyBrick5

Why are people complaining about the S4 Pro? I’ve got one in my Xperia Z and it flies! The 600 is still brand new and thus, would hike the price up.

The RAM is much more important in my opinion and we need at least 1.5GB (2GB desirably) as the 1GB in the original model made it feel really sluggish when multitasking.

More RAM alongside a full HD screen, the S4 Pro, a bigger battery, a better front camera (I really dont get the need for a rear shooter at all on a tablet) and Android 4.3 would make this absolutely perfect!

  • Nate B.

I actually have a mint conditioned black S4 for Sprint and clean ESN for bid. Highest bid is only at $305. 5 more days until auction ends. http://www.ebay.com/itm/161023734158?ssPageName=STRK:MESELX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1555.l2649

      • It isn’t necessarily that I am poor, but I make bad decisions.

The thing is, there’s also the rumor that it will support wifi ac..but the s4 pro doesn’t !
Does that mean it will have a s600 ? Let’s hope and see..

  27. I actually have a mint conditioned black S4 for Sprint and clean ESN for bid. Highest bid is only at $305. 5 more days until auction ends. http://www.ebay.com/itm/161023734158?ssPageName=STRK:MESELX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1555.l2649

Will they include $25 in google play money too?

This device sounds fantastic from that description, but it would be hard for me to quit the ipad mini. I got too many games on this thing.

  31. Looks like my daughter will get my hand me down nexus 7 32gb version, but that will be a nice upgrade for her over her original kindle fire. I look forward to this new Nexus 7 coming out.

  32. look forward to it, price is just right too =)

  33. nice resolution and a better battery. the $199 price hits a sweet spot too.

I will be able to get my hands on one of these?
    If I gotta wait 3 months I’m skipping and sadly buying a nexus 7 1 :/
