NVIDIA SHIELD making the rounds in New York and San Francisco theaters

We think the NVIDIA SHIELD is an awesome product, but it has faced its fair share of problems. Most recently, the product release date was pushed back at the last minute. NVIDIA cited a third party parts problem and decided to fix it prior to launch. However, those who were looking forward to SHIELD will now have a chance to play with it.

NVIDIA will be holding events in New York City and the San Francisco Bay Area to show off the device. Starting last weekend and continuing through August 18th on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, NVIDIA will show off the SHIELD in select movie theaters for fans to check out. Here are the participating theaters:

  • Garden State 16 — 1 Garden State Plaza, Paramus, New Jersey
  • New Roc Stadium 18 — 33 Lecount Place, New Rochelle, New York
  • Cupertino 16 — 10123 North Wolfe Road, Cupertino, California
  • Mercado 20 — 3111 Mission College Boulevard, Santa Clara, California

If you’re interested in SHIELD, head over to one of these theaters to check it out. I will personally spend a considerable amount of time playing with SHIELD, and I’ll be sure to tell you all about it. Will you be coming out to these areas?

I went to AMC Cupertino last night.

Nvidia Shield devices and people were there and let me play with device and check the details.

I don’t know about other places, but they were there last night too, and it’s July as you know.

I think it is a good device but I won’t go as far as saying awesome. On top of that, they priced themselves out the market. This is not more portable than a tablet which has a decent game selection. if you only use it at home, then you have the Ouya and other games systems plus the game consoles, XBOX, etc. I love everything Android but in terms of target market, market share, usefulness, and other things, I don’t see much of a future for this.

Sure it would be nice if it were cheaper, but $299 hardly seems irrational for the hardware at launch. It may not be more portable than a tablet, but it’s a far superior gaming device if that’s your main interest and clearly that is the audience that Shield is targeted toward. I think if you are a PC gamer the Shield is a compelling option and while that is a niche audience it is a pretty healthy niche.
