Fleksy brings a usable keyboard to the Galaxy Gear smartwatch

Samsung Galaxy Gear Fleksy

The Samsung Galaxy Gear smartwatch technically runs a full build of Android, so it can run Android apps that work on its small display. However, for obvious usability purposes, Samsung has not included a virtual keyboard with the Gear. So how is someone supposed to do their typing on their brand new smartwatch?

Surprisingly, the Fleksy keyboard works great with the Galaxy Gear without any modification necessary. When sideloaded, it comes up like it should when tapping on text boxes, and its great prediction engine provides proper auto correct for sloppy typing with big fingers. Logically, it’s the perfect fit for the Galaxy Gear. Loannis Verdelis, COO of Fleksy, tried it himself and liked to enough to promote the app as compatible with the Gear.

The only way to get Fleksy onto the Galaxy Gear at the moment is to sideload the APK file over ADB (no root or modification required). It’s quite easy, so this shouldn’t be an issue. It’s an awesome find to further expand the flexibility of this device, so give it a shot and tell us how it goes!

Can you tell me where I can download the APK file from please

You can download the app from the Play Store and pull the APK from the device. But in terms of 3rd party sources, I can’t recommend any. They all come with risks.

From your command prompt, type in adb reboot to reboot the gear, mine went away after that, works great now

Anybody know a texting app that will work? I tried whatsapp and need Internet to get it started, so that one won’t work, unless some how we can get Internet on the gear

    • Mr Man

Hey there, in case you didn’t find it yet. You can get internet if you root your gear, install a new Rom and use Bluetooth tethering to tether to your phone. Drains the battery like crazy though.

      • Patrick

Ya that’s something I don’t wanna do, right now I can usually swing almost 2 days of battery with it, with average use, it would just be nice to be able to do more on it without draining the like crazy.

Do you know if that only drains your battery if your using it constantly, or just just by having it rooted does it drain it?

I use this (I also used fleksy in the past) for dictionary apps on my GG.

  • Mr Man

Thanks for the article. Works great! Especially when using a file explorer. Now we need a good messaging app without root.

(If your not sure… Google it)

Successfully downloaded it to my gear. Now, which apps can you use with this newfangled keyboard? Any suggestions?
