HTC to miss self-imposed HTC One Android 4.4 release

htc-one-kit-kat

The HTC One Android 4.4 update is rolling out to unlocked handsets across Europe, but owners of carrier-branded handsets in the US will not be getting the update by the end of January as previously promised. Jason Mackenzie, President of HTC Americas, announced yesterday afternoon that HTC hopes that carrier certification of the update will be completed soon and that “it shouldn’t be more than one to two weeks to complete each of the carrier versions of the HTC One.”

HTC has been very transparent about the Android 4.4 update process for the HTC One and a few other of its handsets in the US. Delayed software updates are not the type of news consumers typically want to hear, but HTC should get some credit for having an open conversation about the status of the One’s Android 4.4 update before its self-imposed deadline expired.

How do you think HTC has been handling the Android 4.4 update process for its lineup?

People really should stop buying those bloated carrier phones. International unlocked variants are way better at updates.

Not my much since the unlocked international model just started receiving the update this week. If you want speed, the HTC One Developer Edition is the device to own.

What do you mean nail in the coffin? What do you own? A Ragidy Ass Samsung galaxy s4 which won’t getvthe update until march. If then. And it won’t stop the lag or fix the ugly ass touch wiz!! Which is an LG optimus ui rip off. The optimus ui runs lightning fast. Nothing like an original!! Why is it that there is a Samsung dickeating troll on every HTC one page. Shut the fuck up clown. You’re mad because it won phone of the year & is the most award winning phone of all time. Do your research clown. This is a page about the HTC one anyway!!.

Thank you Kwaku, it’s about time someone tell these blind idiots the truth. The HTC One is such a GREAT superior pho to that trashy S4 that I wonder if those people that bought them were actually blind or is it that they are so immature that they don’t know real quality when they see one.

Thankful for transparency, but boo for not getting this done on time. Additional, it should have been release a a month ago, end of January was late to begin with.

      Blame the carriers

    • Cory

HTC One Developer Edition and Unlocked Edition got the update in November. It is all the carriers. And end of January to late? Not really. It is actually fast.

    • Purestriker

HTC and Google did get the update out on time. You people really need to stop bashing HTC and Google. They’ve done their parts. This isnt anything new. You know US carriers ALWAYS delay the updates to add their crapware. AWAYS, this hasnt changed at all. End of January and still sooner than most of the other Oems. And really is your device running so crappy you absolutely have to have the update for it to perform better? I doubt it. And the update is on time. The carriers are the reason its delayed. So if you’re going to place blame at least put it where it belongs.

  • alexanderharri3

Blame the carriers, yes….but also blame HTC for knowing the carriers would allow a delay, and only getting the final build out in time for the international (no to little review) editions. When announced, they clearly said even with carriers.

HTC would be great if they promised something they could actually make, and not wait til the week before the deadline to let it slip when clearly they knew ahead of time that it wouldn’t make it.

    • Purestriker

You have got to be kidding. Are you serious? You’re trying to blame HTC for the carriers actions? Wow. You’re clueless. Did you miss the part about the Dev and Unlocked versions of the HTC One getting the update back in November? The carriers had had the update. Its strictly their fault the update is being delayed. What part of that do you not undertand?

  • Mark

I could care less about the KitKat update. Not much of an improvement, and it could wait. I mean, what’s the rush? Life going to end after January 31st because of no 4.4? Naw, I’m happy with my current HTC One Phone on 4.3. Besides, this one will be given to a family member, once the second version comes out. That will be 4.4 and Sense 6.0 (I hope).

I like the HTC one. But they need a better cover story about the update.

I appreciate the heads up from HTC but you can’t tell your children you will take them to the movies and then not show up for a week or two later…

    HTC is still awesome.

It’s pretty embarrassing that HTC didn’t even make this mark for its European unlocked model :(
