Spotify is passing on Google Cast for audio in order to focus on its own Connect

spotifyandroid1aam

Lots of folks got excited by the Google Cast for audio announcement earlier this week because it’ll make beaming music to your speakers (so long as they’re compatible) super easy. However, there is one company that’s not super into Google Cast for audio.

Spotify has confirmed that it doesn’t plan to support Google Cast for audio. Instead, it’ll continue to push Spotify Connect, its own offering that lets you push your music from your phone or tablet to a compatible speaker or receiver. Spotify explains that it believes that Connect lets it delivered the best home music experience and that Connect is already “optimized for ease-of-use and audio quality.”

While most speakers and receivers will likely support both Google Cast and Spotify Connect, it’s still kind of a bummer to hear that Spotify won’t just show love to Google. After all, there are already a number of other music services and device manufacturers signed on to support Google Cast, and it’d be nice to have to deal with just one beaming service instead of multiple ones.

Have you ever used Spotify Connect?

I bought an Amazon Fire TV box, on the promise it had “Netflix! Spotify!”. Only to find out it doesn’t really, it has some Spotify Connect/airplay type app that you can beam over music from your phone to it and play. Except.. I dont’ have a phone, so no Spotify on Amazon Fire TV for me.

(which, thinking about it, there is a Trade Description suit waiting to happen there)

They still refuse to support Chromecast too. It drives me mad.

If Google wasn’t competing with Spotify with both Google Music and YouTube, this might all be different. Sure, Apple does as well with Beats and iTunes but they aren’t a search company. Google owns the main way people access and explore content, and they always show their own content first and present it in a richer format rather than equally.

Not really surprised. If Spotify would support Google Cast for Audio or Chromecast, their own standard, Spotify Connect, would suffer from it. There are already a lot of speaker manufacturers that use Spotify Connect – which means, if someone owns a SC Speaker – they are very likely to stay with Spotify. Everyone company tries to press their standards to tie the costumers to their products…

And yes, I am using Spotify Connect – I run Spotify on my HTPC and control it with my Android app. Works great…

I have spotify Connect on my stereo and I still opt to use spoticast with chromecast despite being more work for me. Every time!
What a stupid territorial mindset Spotify is showing off. I really don’t like Google Play Music or the idea of loosing all my playlists, but the big G is getting hard to resist when Spotify is just plain stupid. The request for chromecast support has been very loud and vocal and ignoring it is like shooting yourself in the leg “Because I can™”
    GOD I hate stupid companies!

What really grinds my gear is they don’t give a damn about android wear, and I’m living in some place where Google music is not supported, so I’m sucking it up

This means I will stick to Deezer and never move back to Spotify then…
