Microsoft said to have dropped more than $100 million on Sunrise Calendar

Hot on the heels of the release of Outlook, Microsoft’s rebranded version of the Acompli email app, the folks in Redmond have apparently snapped up another popular app.

Microsoft has acquired Sunrise Calendar for more than $100 million, says TechCrunch. Sunrise is a free app that’s available on Android as well as iOS, Mac, and the web. It supports Google Calendar, iCloud, and Exchange.

Neither Microsoft nor Sunrise have made any statements regarding this rumor, so it’s still a rumor for now. It wouldn’t be a huge shock if this report turns out to be true, though, because Sunrise is an attractive and popular app, and Microsoft has shown lately that it’s interested in beefing up its presence across mobile platforms.

It’s not clear if Microsoft will pull Sunrise and rebrand it as something else or just leave the existing app on virtual shelves. Whatever happens, it’ll be interesting to see what features and goodies are added to Sunrise now that it’s got Microsoft money behind it.
