Do you buy your phones on or off contract?

I bought the T-Mobile G1 on contract. In hind sight that was a mistake. Being a first generation phone it was quickly outdated. I became envious of all the great phones that I couldn’t touch because I was locked into a contract for 2 years. I didn’t want to spend the money to break contract. I should have purchased the phone off contract since within a year I would be wanting something new.

My next phone, the T-Mobile G2, I bought off of Ebay and definitely off contract. I fulfilled my 2 year contract and ever since have been going month to month.

But now I’m eye balling the Galaxy Note or the Samsung Galaxy III and I’m tempted to sign another contract so I don’t have to drop $650 to get an off-contract phone. Instead drop $300 and sign another contract? Hmmm?

Knowing that I will probably only be happy with a phone for a year makes the 2 year contract seem a bit too long. Am I willing to save money up front and then lose money when I break contract. Or should I just buy the phone off-contract up front knowing that I’ll only stay with the phone for perhaps a year.

Each of us make this decision and I wanted to poll for what other’s rationale is and the way you buy your phones.

(Besides, I want to enter this contest so I can get a chance to win a Transformer Prime!)
