I Wish Developers Would Stop Trying to Make Console Games for Tablets

It is just so frustrating. Just because a handheld device is capable of rendering 3D scenes doesn’t mean we should instantly try to make the same games that we use a mouse and keyboard, or a controller, for the tablets. If think about it for more than 3 seconds you would realize how fucking stupid of an idea that is.

Don’t get me wrong, there are fun games on the tablets. Ironically, Chu Chu Rocket (a console game) is one of the best. That just happens to have a great conversion to tablet because the controls are so simple. Wind-Up Knight is also decent among others that I am too lazy to remember or look up right now.

But, most games on the tablet completely suck. Has anybody tried playing anything on OnLive? Dumbest thing I have ever seen. Depending on the game the screen can have anywhere from 8 to over a dozen different soft buttons. That shit just doesn’t work.

Or we can use something like DeadSpace as an example. That game is god-awful. If I am playing on a 10-inch screen, there is no way a developer should ever expect me to reach all the way to the very center of the screen to touch or swype something. I don’t know about you but I don’t have 5-inch thumbs. Or there are the games like NOVA or whatever that 3rd person shooter is that is supposed to be all cool. I’m sorry, these control schemes just don’t work on a tablet.

Why do people thing a game has to conform to a certain formula? Yes, Call of Duty sells very well, but that doesn’t mean we should have that kind of game on a tablet. In fact, BECAUSE games like Call of Duty sell so well on consoles, trying to make those games for a tablet would be the dumbest thing you could do. You may hate games like Farmville on Facebook, but at least they aren’t trying to be something that would never work on a platform like Facebook.

The type of games that belong on tablets are games that require very little accuracy and precision in terms of input. Give me games like turn-based RPGS, turn-based strategy games, simulation, puzzle, etc. And that doesn’t mean you can’t have fast paced games. You can have quick thinking puzzle games or something else, but you shouldn’t have shooters or Sonic.

I mostly agree, but I do believe that Tablets can replace consoles. However, for that to happen, you need to plan on using a controler like a console and perhaps even plugging it in to a TV like a console. Games that are consolelike need to plan on only using a controller, or come up with a huge breakthrough in touchscreen controls.

    Ever heard of the Zeemote?

You sound like a PC gamer complaining about console fps while championing the keyboard.

The keyboard and mouse is better than a game pad for fps, but the majority gets along just fine on a game pad.

A game pad may be better than a touch screen, but given the sales of Nova and Modern Combat on iOS and Android its clear many people are willing to yet again compromise for the convenience mobile platforms provide.

If your not good enough on a touch screen, maybe you need a little more practice. If you just don’t like it, then don’t buy these type of games. But don’t go asking developers to stop making these games because there are plenty that do.

I can see where you’re coming from. A poorly made port that is shoehorned onto any system is always terrible and extremely frustrating, especially if you were unlucky enough to actually pay for it.

However, a lot of these games are only lacking a good game controller to make navigating easier.

    Very professionally written.

I’m really sorry but I don’t necessarily agree here yes an fps works great with a keyboard & mouse just aswell as with say a sixaxis controller, but that’s the beauty of android they can be added via Bluetooth (keyboard & mouse) and any android tablet running 3.* up is capable of recognising a sixaxis controller without rooting it only takes a simple micro usb to 2.0 converter on the end of your ps3′s charging cable! Maybe you should be asking them not to stop making them rather begging for these to be made compatible for 1 example is riptide gp.

Actually, I have the opposite opinion. Well, the thing is, these games – especially accelerometer games such as racing – should be suited more towards a 7 inch tablet. The 7 incher would be lighter and easier to hold for a long period of time.

Shadowgun at first was pretty difficult, but after some practicing I actually kinda like the controls. Of course, it can never be as quick as controller (so in multiplayer you are at a disadvantage) but still good. I actually thought that Dead Space has the best controls on an action game on a tablet!

Methinks playing using a controller on a tablet is stupid. Like really. But it’s a different thing if you connect via HDMI to your TV set and play it there.

Well I would say, I would let the users decide. It all depends on how intelligent the controls are. Idea of playing a game while waiting in the queue is amazing. I would want developers to stop doing that. I would only request them to have better controls. If they are serious about a game sell bluetooth finger rings with the game that might help with no soft control buttons.

It is easy to get around the buttons, only thing is that developers have to come up with a better replacement.
