Today at CES, Qualcomm announced it’s new generation of processors and along with it dropped their previous naming categories of S1, S2, S3, S4. The introduced their new Snapdragon 800, 600, 400, and 200 processors with the 800 and 600 being their high end.
Yesterday, nVIDIA announced their new Tegra 4 processor which they claim is the fastest in the world with it’s quad cores + 1 and 72 GPU cores, etc. One big draw back is that it is has no LTE built in which will lead to many problems and disinterest from carriers and OEM’s, who want LTE to be on their high-end smartphones and even tablets. Having the LTE through an optional chipset is gonna hurt them until they make it built in.
Intel also announced some new processors codenamed Bay Trail, the Atom Z2760, which has a quad core processor and is a 22nm chip. They also announced a lower end processor in the Atom Z2420 for emerging markets.
I feel that Qualcomm just put its foot on the gas and looks to have taken all of Tegra 4′s momentum in one fellow swoop because from the specs and looks of things the Qualcomm 800 is the best especially, with its new quad core Krait 400 CPU, Adreno 330 GPU, a faster LTE radio, and 802.11ac.
What are your thoughts on the new processors that were announced? What devices or OEM’s would you like to see using which processor for their high end smartphones and tablets?
