What Are Your Thoughts on the OUYA?

The OUYA is a new gaming console that was just announced. It starts off at $99 and it looks amazing. The OUYA is awesome for developers, especially if you are familiar with the Android SDK because the OUYA is based on Android. Here’s a link to their Kickstarter page if you want to learn more about it or if you want to donate some money. Let me know your thoughts about it in the comments!

I’m surprised that this hasn’t been put on the front page.

Sounds pretty slick for $99 and I have been thinking of donating but I am somewhat worried as this is based off a phone OS…..Can we update it or will we have to buy a new console every year to stay current?

I’m pretty sure you’ll be able to update it. I mean its running the Tegra 3 processor and its completely hackable so I think you’d be able to put in your own processor like a Qualcomm S4 or an other processor that comes out by the time the Ouya is released.

My initial thoughts? This looked cool but I didn’t think it would take off.

My updated thoughts now? Oh holy crap, this evening it was at ~$600k and now it’s at ~$1.9M. Oh holy crap, this is really taking off!

Right there with ya. I finally decided to head over to their Kickstarter page and am thrilled to see that this initiative really seems to have their shiatsu together. Although the geek side of me really wants this (hello hackability), I may hold off for now, if only for the following reasons:

      1. Another console? Really?
      2. 8GB of space? Eek.
      3. Re-buy my previously-purchased Android games? Couldn’t find the answer to this…

I’m curious to hear what you all think about this as well!

        1) I imagine this being a replacement for GoogleTV, so it’s more than a console.
        2) Yeah, needs more storage.
        3) I don’t see this being a huge problem. I don’t think I’d play many of my Android games on here. I envision this being more for *real* games – something I don’t really consider my current Android games as being. Maybe 2-3 exceptions.

Maybe they’ll add an other console with more storage. Or heck, maybe they’ll just change the specs and use more storage. I mean they’ve made well over their goal. Over 2,000,000 last time I checked

Because the console is so cheap i wouldn’t be surprised if they eventually do yearly releases like the iphone with updated processors, storage etc. That’s only if it really takes off

I hope this console brings some more artsy indie games to android, because thats where we’re really lacking right now. The fact that this thing can do 1080p puts it at the weak end of the next generation of consoles, which is pretty cool. I hope enough people buy these that they get some developer attention.
