What is the best solution for tablet gaming controls?

Given the fact that the gaming market grows by leaps and bounds on tablet devices and newer more graphically powerful ones are constantly being released, it begs the question: What is the best way to implement controls?

I am a fan of action games and first person shooters, but I simply cannot stand trying to control them on a touch screen! It seems to me that touch screen controls are only appropriate for puzzle, strategy, casual, or other genres that aren’t about precision movements.

I recently saw this concept tablet being demoed and my jaw absolutely dropped:
project fiona

*That* is a gaming tablet. The dual analog controls, buttons, and handle make gaming a breeze on that tablet.

After seeing that I got to thinking, should tablets essentially become large portable consoles just to improve gaming? Maybe game developers can rally behind a standard bluetooth controller instead. I like to use my PS3 controller with my Android to control games but I wish it more games would be compatible with it. (I use This App for ps3 controller connectivity btw)Or the solution could be “none of the above”, maybe developers should embrace the touch screen by coming up with original gameplay ideas that are designed with a touch screen in mind rather than shoe-horning tried and true mechanics developed on home game consoles.

I really don’t see myself buying good action games like GTA3 simply because I know I will dislike the control scheme…

What do you guys think about controlling tablet games?
